Were I to consider taking the plunge on this, i think I'd want it to see the inside of a Maybach-authorised dealer workshop before going anywhere near it.

I could see this doing the airport run for an upmarket cab company, but it would cost a lot more than their normal E220d Mercs to run.
The lwb S class a few years old costing £40k will be hugely superior will it not?

Did they really lose $300k on each car? Or was that R&D amortisation?
Of course an S class a few years old will be a better bet, but the Maybach has rarity and a certain novelty value.

One could also argue that, based as it was, on the W140 platform, it'll be a lot more robust than some of the more recent S class builds.

No it would not.The maybach has presence but it does not the type of presence that a rolls or a bentley would have.

Rolls Royce Phantom yes, Bentley, not so much unless it’s the new Mulsanne which come out some time after the Maybach. The Maybach brand ceased production 2010 and you don’t see any for sale and if they are, they will be 150k minimum along with the Phantoms and Mulsannes.

You’d be able to spot a 62 a mile away and you’d definitely think the driver is rich which is what it’s about!

I seen one in the flesh that was the same spec in the ad article and it looked dull.Maybe it was the colour. But maybachs tend to look better in darker colours.
The facelifted 62 version with the leds are extremely rare.I would most likely think a maybach owner is an oligarch who has an interesting taste in cars.
I was thinking more bentley arnage.

This is going to end up being the 'posh' car on a local taxi companies fleet.

For a couple of months, until it needs a service or repair - at which point a regular S-Class starts to make much more economic sense.

You're basically getting the same electronics and suspension parts as the sort of Merc you would buy at that age for about £5k, and even then you'd be an idiot as it would always have some ruinously expensive gizmo broken.

Makes no sense whatsoever, not even as a bit of fun or a curiosity.

The price that is being asked for it is lunacy. I wonder what it is actually worth (ie. what would someone pay for it in reality?). 8k?

In a slightly silly moment I could imagine a camper conversion in the rear, it's big enough and could be perfect for a weekends camping at Motorsport events.
A bit like Jimmy Savile’s Range Rover?

there's no comparison, sit in the back of one and see how much space and how comfy they are

I don't see the attraction either, however, there's always a (changing) handful of them in the classifieds, most of them with one particular dealer so there's certainly a market for them somewhere.

It is, essentially, a 12 year old stretched S class. Still not seeing it. Not even close.

The side view of the rear 3/4 of the car with the stripes and profile looks like a strange stretched copy of the Rover 75. Love the rear seats though.

The guys over at carthrottle bought a 2001 S500 for 900 quid and took it to a specialist to see ho much it would put right. It’s an interesting video if you get past Alex’s annoyingness.

Anyways I watched this video after seeing this advert and the shock absorber for an S500 is £1200!! Imagine how much it would cost for this nigh 3 tonne Maybach.

The amount of rust on the S class is unbelievable and I can’t believe how ste mercs were from that era. Very disappointing

My mistake, I meant to say the late editions. The ones on sale are the early models.

The Brave Pill? What is brave is spending £30k on this, when it will be worth £3k in another 5-10 years.

It has aged really, really badly, the tech is dated, the brand means nothing, and the bills will be mental. Actually, I wouldn't touch it at £3k, and I usually like exotic snotters.
Someone would have to pay ME to take it.

And pay the running costs.

And even then, I'd still enjoy driving something else more.
