Does anyone really need a car that big?
America and China.

I doubt the UK market features predominately on BMW's sales forecasts for the 8 series.

Definitely not a Kia stinger laugh
Conversely my wife, who is a driver but not a car person, saw a Stinger recently and asked me if it was the new BMW coupe.

Considering the amount of sales, I'd say that should answer your question. And why should this bother you? Is it a bad thing to have a bit more choice? Don't quite like a 3 series styling and prefer the 4GT? Well, get a 4GT then. I might be wrong, but I THINK the GT cars have a hatch style boot, so can be more practical than a saloon? But I can't remember exactly.

I can't see the problem with having more choice to be honest. Maybe we should all just have a Golf estate instead with 1 engine option.
Yup, the 3gt and 4gc are hartchbacks, more practical for loading stuff into while not being estates. The 3 and 4 have slightly different amounts of room in the back too (the 4 is lower)

This looks like BMW has finally lost their design language and taken the Chinese approach by copying cars.
The current 3 door 8 series proportions, side & back 3/4ers look robbed from the Mustang & now this 4 door looks very Kia Stinger-ish!
Plus If there was currently awards for the Ugly front end then the X7 definitely scoops this whilst 2nd place goes to the Rolls Royce SUV effort, bloody awful!

So has the 6 series ceased to exist and the 8 is the replacement?

I agree, there is something slightly off with the looks, around the rear of the car in side profile.

However I think part of the issue is the colour, white IMO is never good on a big car, as it just makes it look bigger. In a darker hue I think this would look much better.

Bring on the M8GC

Yes, they did it the opposite way round when the last 8 series stopped production. I suppose they don't need two large and expensive coupes at the top of the range.

The 6GC was a fab looking car, this one not so much.

The 8 series coupe isn’t bad looking in the flesh and looks smaller on the roads than it does in the showroom. Adding in the extra rear doors doesn’t work in the 8 for me.

Only 6 left is that hideous 5 series GT which they rebadged into the 6 series line up.

I thought the original premise for the new 8 series was that you would still have the 6 series coupe and GC line-up acting as grand tourers and the 8 would be an out-and-out performance model, taking on the likes of the 911. Looks like they've just gone with deleting the 6 series line up and replacing it with the 8.

Which is set to get an LCI soon no doubt with a 7 lci front end...imagine that hahahaha!

And the 6gt is actually larger than the old 6. Mental.

Why is front wheel drive seen as downmarket? Ok, for ultimate performance, rear wheel drive is better, but in real world driving, especially in the winter, front wheel drive is better (unless the engine is in the back).

As a previous E31 owner, it breaks my heart to see the 8er badge re-used on such a thing.

I was always happy that the E63 blob missed 8er designation.

And now we have this.....

I understand China, sales etc. etc.... but surely there's some old blood at BMW that are sitting on their hands.

It's like the use of an M badge on literally everything I see nowadays.

Every day that goes by, these manufacturers are selling out their souls.

I mirror your thoughts on this as well. I looked around a 8 series coupe at my local dealer and I really liked it, but this doesn't seem to work as well as it did on the 6GC.

The styling says SUV to me - chunky, big unresolved areas with a lot of slashes and curves - the challenge of covering up that much real estate. In my opinion they should put it on stilts and call it the X8 Gran Coupe; this seems to be what a lot of people want these days

Because traditionally, front wheel drive was cheaper to produce. And all the cheap car manufacturers used FWD whilst all the expensive ones used RWD.

Beyond that, there has always been something of a macho element to it; as you say, performance is better with RWD whilst behaviour is more predictable and safe with FWD, creating an environment where favouring FWD said (a) you didn't care enough about performance and (b) you were either too poor a driver, or too much of a wimp, to master the problems of RWD in the wet/snow/whatever.

I think the 2 door is really good looking as per the picture below:

The 4 door not as much but still quite a handsome car to me, the old 8er is lovely as well but I don't see the ugly everyone else seems to be ranting about.

When you think the original E31 8 series was the flagship of the BMW range it was special... now there's that many bloody model's I don't know which is there flagship model..? I still own a 840 sport which I've had for years and when I occasionally use it still think it's special..driving

I love it. A handsome brute. The sweeping side profile and long bonnet are really nice.
