I was wondering this, is it exactly the same drivetrain and chassis as the mini clubman JCW?

New car is released. Shortly thereafter followed by supposed comparison pictures of animals and other cars that also have four wheels and two headlamps. Standard fare on Pistonheads biggrin

This is not my cup of tea. I think I’d be seeking a nearly new previous generation just for the engine.

I think that BMW have done the right thing here. This may have less appeal for some enthusiasts, but for the majority of people who actually buy these cars, it is a significant step forward over it's predecessor. They will sell many more, which is ultimately what they look to do.

For those that want, there may well be some more hardcore versions later down the line.

I'm not sure what car this guy has driven, but it clearly was complete different from my experience. I found the chassis mediocre, the steering and engine extremely dull and the gearbox mismatched. Especially in Sport mode it behaved like a Frankenstein with mid shift acceleration bursts for added drama.

Apparently the engine and gearbox are a massive step down from the old ines.

I'm not one of these who automatically slags off new cars, but this just looks st doesn't it. And it's slower than the old car so who in their right mind is going to trade in their old m135i or m140i for one of these new ones??

To all previous generation m135i and m140i owners, congratulations! laugh

Isn't this an Aisin box rather than the preferred ZF?

Just awful on the exterior

And it’s sacrilegious not having the 140i straight 6

I was thinking of an m140 but they’ve just not delivered

I'm struggling to find a single reason why I would want this over any other hot hatch. The RWD and six pot of the predecessor was a big unique selling point.

This car has....?

A classic example of the new car bettering the old one on every statistical front thereby BMW concluding 'job done' except that as is often the case, less is more.

Old 135/140 had more emotion, was better to drive and at least looked genuinely different to others in the segment. Very few new cars excite me these days.

Another perspective on this.

Just been talking to my next door neighbour. Serial 1 series buyer/leaser, must have had 5 or 6 in a row at least. All 118 or 120 petrols with m-sport bits on them. I mentioned the new one and that they were going fwd, she was over the moon as it meant it would work in the snow, her words. I said to her that it would look funny looking under the bonnet of a BMW and seeing a transverse engine layout. She shrugged her shoulders and said she didn't look under the bonnet!

I think they may have their target audience bang on.

For all the normal 1 series, yes and they will sell tons of them. For this M lite hot hatch thing, i don't think so. Merc with the A35 does it better in the premium segment in my opinion, and even if it's a bit unfair to compare, there's a whole host of cheaper hot hatches currently out there that make more sense.

Why? It was a good car and interesting compared to its rivals.

That it wasn't perfect on a bumpy road just made it more interesting.

OK so from BMW perspective, did the previous M lite M135 / 140 sell in bucket loads in comparison to the lower spec models ?
IF want the 6 cylinder engine then why not the M240i, looks better than the hatch.
