The inane repetition of modern cars

Both look bang average and templated identikit at the back. With their coke can pop, pop four pots.....

Tbf I am an m140i owner.

They do great top trumps figures and bring fast motoring to the masses, kind of, but ludicrous from BMW that they can flog this for more than a rear wheel drive, six pot that preceded it.

When you watch the link below the decesion to join the bland four pot line up looks even more mental.

That said I love having a car maligned by many like Evo and this site, thanks largely to nice dollops of PR from VAG group in favour of their fart machines, when we all know off the traffic light times matter less than in gear grunt and the adaptability of rear wheel drive....

Ugly as sin? To my eyes from the rear 3/4 angle at least, this is a bit of a looker. The grille is challenging, but mini MPV? No, wrong.
It's pretty generic from that angle, lots of lines and none of them in the slightest bit memorable. Ford ripped off the shape of the last gen with their new Focus, it looks like BMW stole the rear of the Focus here.

From the front it looks like BMW transplanted their hideous new nose onto this:

(Don't ask how long it took to find a picture of this, it's so dull I couldn't for the life of me remember what it was called!)

I trust my design skills lol, beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder, and challenging design should be praised. Ridicule all you want, I'm sure your audience will lap it up 🤪🤪🤪

why? the accountants will only praise designs that shift units, hence the one series has lost all its unique selling points and become just another generic box trading on the perceived value of the badge

This made me laugh - why does a half-arsed degree mean you have a more valid view on aesthetics than the wider public - who do you think car designers are designing for? I'd be surprised if there's even a 'graphic design' course at Newcastle Uni.....more of a Newcastle College kind of subject really.

Anyway, back to the car - it's a messy and bland looking thing to my eye, but the interior is better than I've seen in others (and much nicer than the A35). The redeeming feature of the 135i was its 6 cylinder engine - sadly now lost.

Don't like it? Don't buy it. I think it looks really good and I am sure it's a great steer. BMW have form on the driving side of things altbough I appreciate that looks are more important on PH it would seem, however subjective.

Dave is right.
Graphic design .... lol. Go away and spend six months designing a new logo for it. Then come back with an amazing new design that's just like the last but 1mm bigger.
That BMW and the Merc are boring as fk to look at. I'll never drive one so won't comment on that side.

I’m sure I’ll get a lot of hate for this comment... but I don’t like either of them, I never understand these “entry level” car (as in the series not engine) yes, they maybe powerful, expensive and “look,I drive a expensive cheap car” but I don’t see the point, it use to mean something when driving when driving these badge, but now everyone has one.... Also I personally think they’re both ugly.

And an AMG that start with an 3 or 4, isn’t an AMG, just a powerful Mercedes.

Both of these cars, to me are like going in to Hermes and buying the cheapest item, just so you can say brag to your friends.

The bm is no looker,

If your mad on them and money is no object I think I’d get the last of the rwd ones and shove it in a barn for twenty years.
If I had to pick one I’d get the merc I think

Erm, because I'm trained in design that's why. And research before commenting please, it's slightly embarrassing. Would you buy a coffee recommended by a barista or Kev from accounts? A designer creates for a brief, with personal touches added. BMW dont care if you dont like it, they want the publicity and discussion

Flol. Certainly arrogant like a designer. There should be some cohesion to design, surely your mighty brain can understand and aesthetics are purely subjective. If your argument is that this is a well rounded pleasing design then GTFO. It's high body line and multiple swages and creases leave it a total bloody mess. It looks terrible in side profile, dead ahead or from the rear.

Also your coffee analogy is crazy, I'm more likely to try a coffee based on a work colleagues opinion rather than someone in a shop who is paid to sell me coffee.

at least the 45 has an engine with many forged parts that was hand built by one man, although you pay a 15k premium for the privilege

but AMG like M is just a marketing badge now used to just shift units, audi are only one step away from selling out the RS badge with the diesel S cars

So the A35 is the better drivers car, and the M135 is the better everyday car?

Seems to sum up other reviews saying the A35 covers the middle ground between S3, Golf R’s etc and more focused stuff like CTR and Megane.

Works for me.

Dont care about either of these. With options, they're 42k and 47k.

For this money, I'm more interested in a Tesla 3.

Neither of these 2 cars has anything that trumps the Tesla considering USP and what I'm personally interested in. These 2 are just AWD turbo 4 pots which, if we're being blunt, have been around for decades. I'd even take some of the JDM Subaru's in place of these things, like a spec C RA, or a Litchfield version.

Sorry, but they don't have ANYTHING that appeals to me.

Exactly, it’s no different between an 118 with an M badge or an A180 with an AMG badge...

I said its challenging, not cohesive! I'd rather be challenged visually then left looking at an S3/golf R etc.

Truly great design is jarring, provocative and daring. If you want pretty then buy an A35 instead

The A35 without the aero pack looks dull and boring. More TDI than AMG.

The BMW just look wrong. Soo wrong. It could be the best drivers car in the world, and I still wouldn't buy one based on how it looks.

The A35 dash can seam a bit much, but having sat in one, it does look and feel better than picture give it credit for.

For me, the sweet spot will be the A35 AMG Saloon. That's the one I'm considering. It's just a shame to get the better tech, you have to tick some very expensive options.

The all new S3 Saloon is still a year or so away.
