Honda Integra Type R (DC5) | Spotted

A noughties JDM hero that revs to the moon and costs under £10k? Go on then...

If you follow him on social media, you'll know that Matt's been out driving the Ferrari 488 Pista for an upcoming head-to-head. Lucky git. Without giving away the gist of his upcoming feature, you won't be surprised to hear that the Pista remains nothing short of breathtaking, its boosted 3.9-litre V8 alone cause for celebration. Because despite being heavily turbocharged (568lb ft at 3,000rpm!), the unit produces its 720hp peak at 8,000rpm; 1,000rpm earlier than the holy grail 458 Speciale, sure, but bloody good going for something force fed air like this in 2019.

Of course, back in the early noughties, you didn't need to spend a quarter of a million quid to achieve such a rapid spin of the crankshaft. Honda was making engines that revved to the moon for the mass market, placing its famed K20 into the engine bay of its EP3 Civic Type R with the redline set at 8,000rpm. It had a quarter of the Ferrari's horsepower, yes, but the EP3 cost only £13,995, amounting to the rpm bargain of this century. Unless you lived in Japan when the Integra DC5 went on sale, that is.

Arriving in 2001, the DC5 was at first met with criticism. It was 110kg heavier than the DC2 it succeeded, gaining only 20hp in the process and leaving some to claim it had lost the earlier car's light-footed agility on the road. But whatever the opinions of its chassis, few could deny the K20 engine under its bonnet was a marvel, producing 220hp at 8,000rpm and - because VTEC - its torque peak of 152lb ft 1,000rpm earlier. It meant the fatter DC5 had 206hp-per-tonne to the DC2's 188, which was enough to convince many that sufficient progress had been achieved.

Even before the JDM-only model was given a helpful popularity boost by the Fast and Furious films, there were plenty of other things to love about the DC5. The looks were admittedly Marmite, but they were also perfect for the tastes of Japan's then-exploding tuner scene - hence the large fixed rear spoiler, red Recaro sports seats and 10-spoke alloys. And the car didn't lack the character to match, its front end nice and responsive and its motor demanding to be wrung out all the time, representing one of the last hurrahs for properly peaky Japanese powerplants.

It didn't take hindsight for people to want one; plenty of Brits were keen to import grey DC5s to the UK during the car's production run, meaning the population grew and grew until the end of the noughties. There are 16 DC5 Integra Type Rs on PH today, with at least a dozen looking Spotted-worthy to illustrate the ongoing enthusiasm for the model. It wasn't easy, but we've picked one from the line-up that looks to be a good all-rounder in terms of price, mileage and condition, with 82,000 miles seemingly having done it no harm.

It's a 2010 import that looks to be in remarkably good condition; those brake calipers seemingly as fresh as the day they left the factory and the cabin not far off that level either. No less important, this car is in all-original condition, even retaining its original JDM stereo system. The seller claims there's no sign of rust or corrosion, and that the car has just been serviced at Honda, receiving a fresh coating of underbody protection as well. So as far as we can tell, it's ready to rock and roll its way to the giddy heights of 8,000rpm right now. All for the modest sum of £9,245.

The article doesn't quite do the chassis justice. It's a complete peach.

It's not as good as the DC2. There, I got it in.

Never got on with mine after a few electrical issues. Replaced with a Clio Trophy, a car I much preferred.

Agree with above, my DC5 came after I had owned a DC2, it just wasn't as sharp.

I’m still getting used to mine, bought it a couple of weeks ago...

I’ve had so many positive comments about it. Took my gf out init at the weekend and she spotted someone leaning out of the car, she said “what’s he doing”, taking a picture of the car I replied. She couldn’t believe it.

Cracking cars, was a priveledge to own one for a couple of years.

Would have another for sure (in any colour except red!), relatively cheap to run for all that performance too.

Mmm shiny, fast & red smile

There's what looks like a 4dr version of this near me. Faux or an import?

I understand that the Integra is rarer and more focused, but I can't get my head around the price difference between one of these and a Civic Type R. How cheap is a decent FN2 Civic these days? £3-4k?

At this price point, if I wanted a driver-focused Jap coupe, I'd have a leggy GT86.

Very nice car sir.

I never really considered one of these until I had a pax ride in one at Snetterton.
It was fantastic- genuinely fast, handled beautifully and the noise of the engine over 8000rpm was incredible.
I’m a convert (& now on the lookout for a good one)

Agree with the sentiment but I'd buy an EP3 and throw some money at a suspension upgrade rather than am FN2.

I did consider a DC5 about 8 years ago when they were a fair bit cheaper than current prices. General opinion then was that it was a let down after the brilliant DC2 so I cannot really figure how pinion has changed so much. When I test drove one I really didn't think it was much better than the EP3 I had at the time which cost less than half as much.

I too have only owned mine a matter of weeks. It has had much love and cash lavished on it previously and produces 270bhp at around 8000rpm. It takes time to learn (remember) how to drive after years of driving cars with turbo powered torque. But it rewards with a well sorted chassis and fun at less than 10/10ths. Attended the Pistonheads Oulton Park taster day where it really shone. Great car and I have more fun in six weeks than in over a year with an M2. The cars “image” doesn’t really fit with who I am (50 something) but that’s not my problem as I couldn’t give a damn. If you have never driven one, or can’t get past the image, drive one whilst you still can.

Not had the opportunity to drive either sadly, but have been a passenger in both a DC2 and a DC5. I preferred the rawness of the DC2 (though it felt properly cheap and nasty) but both are nice cars in my view. They are strong money now though. For £10k, I would find it hard to buy one of these over something like a Megane 250.

Would a stripped and upgraded DC5 bring back some of the rawness?

They are a bit bigger than a DC2, not an issue on track I guess, for road I prefer smaller cars.

Awesome car, I remember chasing one in my TR7 V8. Nothing in it in a straight line, probably much to the ITR's surprise.

Although for me, it would be the DC2 not the 5. The DC2 looks way better IMO, especially the UK quad lights. To this day, it is still the best FWD car I've been in or driven.
