We all know how American horsepower never measures up to real horsepower.
Yep. Ford Coyote and Dodge Hellcat both underrated from the factory, both produce significantly more power than claimed.

TBH I'd much rather see Ford produce a

Confusing lag with boost threshold.
Not really. On commenting old school high hp builds there was definitely a big treshold, and I do count that as lag also. But commenting this engine, the torque curve suggests that there is not much of a treshold as torque is on a rise from the start (with reservations for rpm scaling of said graph potentially distorting the picture). But as long as torque is on the rise on a run in a given gear (this run quite short from the vid) we're basically witnessing the turbo spooling up, i.e a measure of lag. Typically once the torque curve is on a high plateau flat and torque is limited (typically a turbo will produce a peak shaped curve if let loose completely), there is enough gas flow to have minimal lag and spool isn't delayed because of lack of gas flow. Since there is quite a flat part and additionally peak power is made a good part past that plateau meaning torque isn't dropping very quickly thus power isn't entirely based on massive boost only, my conclusion is indeed that lag isn't all that bad

Additionally, an EFR ball bearing turbo tends to spool fast for its size...

Yep, you and me both. It's impressive, sure, but it doesn't do a lot for me.

Hmm. They used to get 1,500bhp out of a 1.5l turbo engine back in the 80s in formula 1, but that doesn't mean it would last long enough to use as an everyday engine (or indeed another qualifying session back in those days). I wonder how long this one will last with short runs, cold starts, over-revving before its warmed up etc? Give me a nice big unstressed V8 any day!
Things have moved on quite a bit since 1986.
So who is making a reliable 1500hp 1.5l engine these days? 1hp per cc is as impressive today as it was then.
That’s not what I’m saying. What I’m saying is 684bhp from a 2.3 engine today will be more reliable than a 684bhp 2.3 litre engine would have been in 1986.

A lot of focus on having this in the RS but what about the Mustang? Would make that a very interesting prospect!

Don't see why really, as you can get the V8 with similar outputs if that's your thing...

I think a supercharged V8 would still be the one to have.

Yes, I have. Apart from a Scooby, what four cyls lack most is character. We can agree to disagree I suppose though?
I know you say most, I think the k20 honda is up there with the best. I did like the f4r in the old Clio too. Stuff got a bit wk when they shoved turbos on everything like the focus rs for example and started introducing pops and bangs when ever you lift your foot off the throttle at 5 mph

To much power for the roads . Get a evo or scooby with around 350bhp decent suspension set up properly . Good tyres big break kit . Fast enough engaging to drive on the twisty . Most of all fun to drive . This is just a marketing ploy so all the Ford fan boys can nurse a semi

I hear this all the time and it’s a croc.

350bhp is anaemic to some and earth shattering to others. Like most things it’s all relative.

Agreed! BMW's old straight sixes spring to mind for me, especially...and I'm only just the wrong side of 30...
+1 I'm on my 4th BMW straight six, the way the power is delivered and the willingness to go to red line, makes them a very nice engine and that's without the silky smoothness.

P.S. I'd still like to try one of these mad motors though, just to see, maybe we have it wrong.

I can only go from my experience of the fast cars I’ve owned . Alpina b3 biturbo bmw e90 m3 . Some fast motorbikes Aprillia Rsv 1000 Suzuki gsxr 750 . So yes I can form an option that’s relative to me . Also if you look some of the best drivers cars . For engagement and fun . You will prob find there’s not many over 400bhp . Evo Tomi Mack and Subaru 22b about 300bhp . Bmw e46 m3 355bhp some of the best drivers cars ever made .

Yes but what has engagement and fun got to do with saying something has ‘too much power for the roads’.

I find a Suzuki Swift sport fun and engaging. I also found my Westfield at 700bhp per tonne incredible engaging. Indeed if you weren’t engaged enough you’d be in a hedge. 😂

Think your missing the point . let me explain for the second time . In my opinion and it is only my opinion . So in the bigger scheme of things it dsnt really amount to much . Some of the best drivers cars . Seem to be around a certain power point . Which in my very unlimited driving ability. I’d find a well set up car around this point of power . Probably to be fast enough for the roads and my abilities . Even then depending on we’re you live . What access you have to decent roads . If your prepared to drive like a tit risk other road users lives . There wouldn’t be much of a time or place . Where you could safely open a high powered car up and exploit its potential. On a track of course you could . In a ideal world it would be nice to be able to fly road a country bend . At break neck speeds with out worry of ploughing into the back of a possession of horse riders .
