Do Ford actually refer to anything as "MK"? Not in my experience of working with them. Everything is referred to by the code, B232 or whatever.

The list posted by someone above is about as accurate as it needs to be, so MK1 is the first Fiesta, MK2 is the mid-80s one, MK3 came out in 1989, MK3.5 was the light facelift with fuel flap, MK4 was the new model in 1995, MK5 in 1999, MK6 in 2002, MK7 in 2008, MK7.5 in 2012, MK8 in 2017.

I don't know anyone who thinks of them any differently to be honest.

Indeed, it's only a few misinformed websites that seem to mention any differently.

It's a Mk6, then the Mk6.5 (Facelift) came out in 2006.

Here's my Mk6.5, albeit a 1.6TDCI.

An ST500 (Final edition) is the one to buy..... Basically an ST150 but in black, black wheels, full leather and carbon trim.
Can see them going up a bit in value in the next years!

There’s also a (fully loaded) Focus ST (500) from the same era, I believe? 500 refers to the numbers made. Run out specials from the old generation...

Appreciate that its become known as the "Mk5", but even in your list it stands out: Mk4 new model in 1995, 4 years later a "new" Mk5 and then 3 years later a new model/platform Mk6. Did Ford release 3 major Fiesta releases in 7 years ?

Using Generation to identify and Mk and as label:

Gen 1 1976 aka Mk1
Gen 2 1983 aka Mk2
Gen 3 1989 aka Mk3
Gen 3 fl 1993 aka Mk3.5 (remained in production until 1997)
Gen 4 1995 aka Mk4
Gen 4 fl 1999 aka Mk5
Gen 5 2002 aka Mk6
Gen 5 fl 2005 aka Mk6.5
Gen 6 2008 aka Mk7
Gen 6 fl 2013 aka Mk7.5
Gen 7 2017 aka Mk8

The normal cycle for a new model is ~7 years with a face lift somewhere in the middle. (Although earlier 70s/80's generation Fords ran much longer cycles and we've discuss Mk1 fl/Mk2 enough already).

See what I mean ? Referring to the Face-lifted Gen 4 as a "Mk5" completely breaks that cycle ! And why was the Mk5 special ? Why aren't the Mk6.5 and Mk 7.5 elevated to Major Mk status ?! The latest Fiesta should be a Mk10 ?!!!!

Also, interestingly the Focus community haven't fallen into this trap. Even though the Mk2 and Mk3 Face-lifts were quite major in terms of appearance, they resisted the temptation to up the Major Mk. So they are correctly identified as Mk2 FL/Mk2.5 & Mk3 FL/Mk3.5.

Metallic black with silver racing stripes, echoing the classic GT 500 racing livery from Le Mans 1969.

Some don’t have those decals though.

Having written the previous post it dawned on me as to the likely reason as to why the 1999 model was/is referred to as the “Mk5”. I think it’s due to the fact the Fiesta has existed for so long and was around when Ford transitioned to the ~7 year model cycle.

The 1995 Mk4 / Gen 4 car was the first Fiesta to follow the 7 year cycle, although at the time this wouldn’t have been obvious. So when the 1999 Mk4 facelift came out the Mk allocation used the same rules as on the previous Mk1 to Mk4 in that “If it looks different, then it’s a new Mk” and the 1999 car was allocated “Mk5”.

Although the clues were there for the 1999 Fiesta only being a facelift (Only 4 years since the Mk4 and 90% the same) it was only confirmed, when right on cue, 7 years after the Mk4 (and only 3 years since the “Mk5”!) the All-New 2002 Fiesta is released. Obviously as the identification of the 1999 Fiesta as a “Mk5” was by now engrained, the 2002 release has to be a “Mk6”. Even though clearly it is the Gen 5 Fiesta.

After that everyone got use to the 7 year cycle with a face lift in the middle hence the Mk6, 6.5, 7, 7.5, 8…. With no disagreement and no suggestion the face lifts should up the Major Mk.

I suspect we’d be having the same debate with the Escort if Ford hadn’t changed the name to Focus!

The same confusion exists about the Mondeo.

The Mk1 Mondeo was launched in early 1993, and facelifted in mid 1996.

The second generation was launched in 2000 (7 years after the original), but everyone calls this the MK3 smile.
