Especially as in general use the A6 is of anything too big for the UK.
Huh?!?I was going to say the S6 should be fitted with the 3.0 TFSI V6 from the S5, but on balance I don't really care as I don't want an Audi and will never buy one. I used to thin the S4 B5 with the 2.7 twin turbo and the 4.2 B6 was nice - albeit blunt objects - but gone so far off Audi I don't care if the next RS6 is a V8 TDI..

I'm not sure I get the point of it though. Is a 50tdi that much slower to make the premium worth it?
No, not at all.Totally pointless to me, no one will convince me that an Sx Audi should have an oil burner.

It is a good point about differentiating it from the RS6.
I see a lot of modern RS cars about but very few if an S Cars (other than the S3).
It still seems like an odd choice now given the move away from diesel and with the VW diesel scandal still in people’s memories.
Yes, I totally agree with you. I see a lot of modern RS cars about but very few if an S Cars (other than the S3).

Petrol s cars in europe didn’t sell in any numbers.
They need an s range.
V6 Diesel block needs to go somewhere.
Diesel sales falling off cliff so someone cleverly added this up to revive the diesel story.
I can’t imagine anyone buying these. Then there will be huge incentives and dealer contributions and people will buy the few, and then depreciation.

Hmm... and yet if Audi really thought that they wouldn’t have continued with the S6, S5 and S7 being petrol in other areas- USA for example.
Bottom line is they needed to reduce CO2 across the group in Europe and had a ton of Diesel engines around that were destined for large Porsches.
It’s a marriage of spare parts and legislation, sadly not engineering.
Agreed, they’re marketing their way out of an internal problem. Bottom line is they needed to reduce CO2 across the group in Europe and had a ton of Diesel engines around that were destined for large Porsches.

Well, I'd definitely buy one. I'm just back from a quick 750-mile trip in its older sibling, a 2018 A4 Allroad 3-litre diesel with 'only' 268 hp and 443 lbs ft.
It went like a dingbat and returned over 40 mpg so minimal stops for fuel - couldn't have done that in a V10. Quiet, compliant, comfortable, brilliant B&O sound system, swallowed huge amounts of luggage including three people and a dog and never missed a beat. What's not to like - 143 gms/km CO2 and AdBlue so minimal NO2.

S4 / S6...
used to be along the lines of the S4 was for enjoying the twisties in while the S6 was a distance crusher. much like the BMW M3 M5 debate.
stepping out the world of advertising and ultimate petrol headed snobbery.... having run two A6 diesel V6's a C6 and then a C7 I can say that in real terms those engines are amazing mills. the torque is what matters and it has it in buckets and at low revs. what do you want when you need to cross countries, a highly strung petrol or a diesel express ?
A tuned V6 giving 300hp with 600nm and quattro all wheel drive, it has for the past two years given me trouble free rapid transport, what is there not to like. give it a sporty flavor and would it really mater what pump the S6 drinks from

I would assume more S4 & S6 sales are company lease deals anyway. So maybe Diesel make more sense and may actually push up sales. Like you say not many S4 & S6 cars on our roads, but loads of 340d, 540d, and equivalent mercs.
The S3 (I have a Saloon) is a smaller car and being an A3, falls more into the private buyers bracket, where most people will probably opt for Petrol, given the lower annual miles compared to a company car owner.
I always like the S4. It was a sports saloon. But it's grown into a big car now, so not likely to be bought by private owners looking for a sporty Saloon car. That is now the S3.
BMW don’t seem to be competing with this any more - since the F10/11 535d the new G3x model is only available as 530d or 540i in 6-cylinder forms. 540d and 550d aren’t sold in the UK. Would love to be proven wrong. The S3 (I have a Saloon) is a smaller car and being an A3, falls more into the private buyers bracket, where most people will probably opt for Petrol, given the lower annual miles compared to a company car owner.
