But it had a V10, or a Twin Turbo V8 or a warbly I5. This one is effectively a 55TDI but with a big jump in price.
The point you make about your own A6 sums it up for me: a 50 TDI will do 95% of what this one can do but much cheaper. This doesn't even have a silly engine to make it at least sound interesting. It will be relentlessly capable of course, but so will a regular A6.
Yeah, but when I bought my A6, it was the most powerful diesel engine they had at the time. If I was in the market today, then I would probably have to go for the S6 (though I am preferring to call it a 55TDi!), purely because I am a man with insecurity issues, so would again have to go for the most powerful diesel they sold!!! I don't really understand why anyone needs such vast cars these days. When you see how large the RS3 is, I just don't get when anyone buys these immense monsters. I look at something like the original S3 or an RS1 as being an ideal practical size. These things look like metallic battleships on comical ghetto hoops. I can only imagine it's a size competition thing.
(I'm not anti Audi, as Ive has a couple of S3).

Depends on your lifestyle. If you've got some or all of dogs, kids and hobbies which require a lot of kit, a massive estate car is useful. Add in styling which makes them less space efficient than the old antique dealer type Volvos and they need to be even bigger to have the interior space.(I'm not anti Audi, as Ive has a couple of S3).

Entirely depends on context. I wouldn't want to steer one of these beasts around a tight multi-storey car park or the narrow lanes of a Cornish village. But plenty of people won't encounter either of those things, and want the space and comfort of a bigger car. In the US, this is merely a "midsize" car...
Well, yeah
Although as I said, I think the S3 is all anyone needs for a daily. Hence why I had two of those. You can fit four people and a mound of luggage in them. Or an MTB.
I'm sure you get the odd furniture saleman finds these useful. But surely not everyone who buys the new A6 etc is into that sort of thing.

Also, though it was just me and m'dog when I bought the car, I now have a partner who comes with two medium sized children and a small dog. Getting two adults, two kids, a German Shepherd, a Shih tzu and everyone's holiday luggage into a Golf sized car would be... interesting.
So you can now buy a petrol A6, with more power than the S6.

Does anyone genuinely care about dieselgate though?
Yes I do. And my unborn children. That’s like saying who genuinely care that all the recycled plastics have actually not been recycled at all. How selfish can you be?As a 2018 S5 owner it’s disappointing to see the S range go diesel. I had planned to go for an S6 next with the 444bhp RS4 engine. that plan got stopped. Add in the fake exhausts and minus 2 cylinders and 100 bhp from the previous gen and there is little to appeal. Better to get a 50tdi black edition chuck a dtuk tuning box on for 400 quid and save over 10 grand. All you would be missing is the fancy seats.
