It'll probably be extremely popular as the general public and the average PistonHeads reader are very different creatures.
I don't see why. I track the Megane and dump stuff at the tip with the Karoq.

The T Roc looks like a great road car to me.

I’ve got a small/short sloped driveway and only do 6k miles a year. I want a roof rack to easily fit to carry kayaks and a big boot. I want it to go fast, automatic and have ground clearance to get down to river/beach boat runs. I want to dislike this, because it’s PH but actually it fits the brief to be on the list for next car....
As someone also known to do a bit of kayaking (literally just finished a 300km paddle down the River Shannon here in Ireland only last Sunday week!), trying to lift my Dagger 145 on to the elevated roof of this T-Roc does NOT fill me with joy. Though luckily, my Prijon WW kayak fits INSIDE my car (an Audi A6 Avant), after a few hard hours out on the water, the extra few cm's of reduced height to get the Dagger on to the roof would be far greater appreciated, which I'd imagine the Golf R Estate to be also over the T-Roc. Being longer as well over the T-Roc, helps with the balance of such a long kayak on the roof too - with the added bonus of more luggage/gear space inside too. As far as ground clearance is concerned? Well in the 10 years and 200,000+ miles I've had the Audi, that thought has never even entered my head: if a road/path/trail seems to be too rough for a Golf R Estate....... I reckon it's a road that you shouldn't take a T-Roc down either!

Unless it's a personal choice/taste thing, but as a fellow kayaker, I cannot see one thing about this T-Roc which is more advantageous over a Golf R Estate, in fact - quite the opposite. Lower roof to lift kayak on to, Longer roof for better balance of longer kayaks, bigger boot for more gear and equipment...... and cheaper too? If I was in the market, would have to be the Estate over SUV/Crossover all day long for me - but then again, I am old! wink

I like that. Just enough ground clearance for taking the dogs to the woods.

But I'd rather have that powertrain in a new Golf Alltrack. That'd be the perfect crossover, with no "steal me" R badge on it.

If I did find myself needing a new weekend car any time soon, I'd certainly have this on the list to try.

Surely VW should have renamed this the T-WOC R. as taken without consent will most likely be its most common use. biggrin

I currently own an estate and would happily have another, unfortunately I think the A6 is a bit long for my driveway- my 3 series touring is borderline as it is. Great effort on the River Shannon! I mainly am out around the Jurassic Coast.

You’d have to be a monumental imbecile to buy this over a Golf R (either hatch or estate). £38k for what is essentially a jumped up Polo, meaning an interior full of sub-standard plastics, a car that isn’t anywhere near as refined as a Golf, and looks stupid too.

Its based on a Golf chassis, not a Polo, the T-Cross is the Polo SUV. But yes, still mad to pay 38k for one smash

Why so intolerant of others having different tastes/priorities from you?

A Golf R wouldn't make it over the stuff I drive through every week; given that the T-Roc R has very nearly the same ground clearance as my Alltrack, it will. I'm not sure how needing to go along a few rough roads to the woods makes me anything, let alone a "monumental imbecile".

You would probably have to be a monumental imbecile to throw insults around whilst failing to get the basic facts to which you have based the opinion on correct I would have thought.

It's not a bad looking thing but I not sure that I really like the wider, thin grills a lot of VAG group cars have now.

Would rather it be the Tiguan R. But kudos for getting near to the current base spec Macan in engine.

Just can’t stop looking at the price !!!

At £28k it would be just about right !

That'd make it eight grand less than a Golf R...

So does this start at roughly the same price as an SQ2 then? Are they direct rivals or is there a significant difference between the two to justify having them competing against each other for sales?

I see the car industry more like Mars chocolate company. So long as you buy a Mars, a Snickers, Twix, Bounty or Malteasers- Mars make money whilst they’re all priced the same.
So long as you buy the SQ2 or the T-Roc R, VAG have made their money whilst making you think you were making a choice!
That does make sense but I would have thought they would still like to keep a natural distance between the top of the range Audi and VW within each segment, unless there are plans for an RSQ2?

I guess it depends how fussed they are about that on the lower models (as in not the RS models).

I’m starting to find these fast SUVs more appealing now that it’s becoming more likely that big engines are not going to be available to the masses in the coming years (see C63 story today) and fast estates seem to be holding their residuals. (And because the missus is barely 5ft so the higher position makes me wince less when she tries to park...)

My Mrs has a T-Roc (I bought it for her - stupid name aside). Reason is: The reversible boot floor that lets our very large dog sit upright, and the clearance that lets us drive over very rocky tracks that would knacker a low slung car. Also 50+ mpg and pretty much all the toys I get on my £50k Jag - for half the price.

Simple really.

I drive it a fair amount. It's a decent drive, but lacks low rev torque. The R will sort that I'm sure, but would I buy the R for that price?

Nope.
Out of interest..... how big a dog are you fitting in a T-Roc?

I'd never buy one new, but I welcome these kinds of cars.Think of them as securing the future. Yeah these aren't particularly interesting to a lot of us on here right now, but chances are VW will sell a lot them, which should mean they'll make a cracking buy for 21 year olds looking to move up to their first fast car in 15 years or so.
