RE: Megane R.S. Trophy-R vs. Golf GTI Clubsport S
Discussion
A FWD family hatchback wouldn't be my go to car if I was interested in track driving either. I'd go for something along the lines of a Caterham/Lotus Elise.
It is a breath of fresh air that manufacturers are still willing to make something like this though. It gives track fans another alternative I guess.

I'm with the nay-sayers I'm afraid.
Yes I get that these are brand new cars.
What I don't get, is : why anyone would pay seventy-two-fking-grand for a brand new car only to thrash it round a track. Especially when that car is not actually that fast.
You could build a much faster, more enjoyable, track-day car for half that, maybe a quarter or less, and have that special feel-good factor that you are in something unique and that you had a hand in building.
I just don't get it.
Maybe I just don't move in the right 'circles' to know anyone who could afford to 'waste' quite frankly, a sum of money like that on a weekend toy that they can't be arsed to put any effort into actually building.

I love that these cars exist & I genuinely applaud the guys at both Renault & VW but....if track thrills are your thing then you could build something more fun for the money (and still keep it road legal).

But what if you were extremely wealthy, already owned lots of exotic metal, were bored, and fancied buying a rare curiosity with pocket change? I know I'd put my name down for one with every possible option and wouldn't bat an eyelid at the cost. You can't view cars like this through the lens of the average car buyer. In my opinion, anyway.MyV10goesWhaaa said:
Soooo... What have we learned....Rear steer is crap and over 70k is way too much for the Renault.. On the VW side you'd be much better off, performance, financially and handling wise in just modding a
GTI or an R....
I thought we all agreed that the correct answer is as always... MX-5. GTI or an R....

I’d wager that financially you’d be a lot better off with the Megane @ 72k in 10 years than you would be spunking the cash modifying a Golf R.GTI or an R....

A £70k Megane seems like a fitting tribute to the last of the great hot hatch brigade as we go EV and will never have again a light car with a practical bodyshell that you can bung it in to any corner and then sort it out.
Renault with GT turbo and then Clio Williams and then onwards to bigger and heavier cars, still managed to keep the ethos.
Surprisingly there are only 2 cars in the top spec produced. Renault has one, who has the other one? Could be a gold mine even at £70k

I didn't suggest that I was crap just that I am not as good as Ronnie O'Sullivan, or any other professional snooker player for that matter. But if I could afford to buy the best table I could, because better tables are better to play on, and I got satisfaction and enjoyment by doing so why would that be a waste?? I certainly wouldn't be doing just for sake of boasting about it. What a narrow minded, shallow person you must be!!Butter Face said:

Folks that mention price cant afford the car, simple as that.
Rubbish, people who can afford the car would rather buy a GT4 or many other cars in this price bracket. We have a customer who has a 458, a GT3 RS AND a Megane Trophy, because, you know, he can afford it.
The person choosing between buying the £70k Trophy-R and a GT4 doesn't exist, if it was your one big car purchase then of course you would buy the Porsche, but it's not, they're being bought by people who have multiple cars and to whom the money isn't really an issue.

At that money you would have to care tho, not so much for the much cheaper cars mentioned and you could drive the shizz out of those.. all day.. every day.. Without the fear of devaluing the thing... And have a much better car in regards to the VW side of things...Edited by MyV10goesWhaaa on Sunday 20th October 15:05

I remember customers laughing at the R26R and saying 'how much for a bloody french hatchback' in 2009. They're more money now than they were selling for then!

The elephant in the room for me isn't the price, it's that the Megane has 2 doors too many.
Normally I'd agree but in this case it gives better aft visibility than the three-door.I've been in the previous generation RS Mégane coupé and the visibility out the back was appalling.

They make sense when you consider the track wheels and tyres fit in there perfectly. Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
