“Why do you need <insert non-essential possession>?”

Or less belligerently, “I like this car.”

I’ve had the question before and I choose one of those depending on the person and tone of the question

Only 132k. It's still got 6 months MOT, I have had both rear airsprings and the torque converter replaced over the last 3 years, amongst other things I've deleted from memory. It's been a disastrous money pit, and I've decided it's not getting any more. Ditching it whilst it's still worth *something* (not much). I've not had the SBC go, but I bet it throws the red warning on the way to being traded in...I've loved driving it and and it's been very comfy on long holiday drives, but I just don't trust it. It st one of its airsprings in the middle of France and I had to drive it back with family, luggage and 4 bikes on board in that state. Turbo throwing limp modes and black death around the injectors. Good night, sweet Princess.

I don't think I'll ever have a Mercedes again. Fur coat, no knickers.
Could always just buy a petrol version...

Someone at work today asked me why I needed such a big car. Any ideas what to say if this comes up again?.
Response is, “You haven’t been in one of these have you?”

Hi all, another longtime lurker, first time poster. My Golf GTD company car went back a few weeks ago so my 996 C4S has been the performing daily duties but as the winter sets in a nicely insulated barge would be a preferable conveyance. Those LS460s are very, very tempting , if a bit overkill and perfect for my 12 mile commute. Best get the measuring tape out for my car space anyway.
Welcome AutoZiele. You seem to have some kind of keyboard problem, which I have corrected for you.

Regarding sizes I believe we have the following dimensions (they are behemoths):

LS430 5.02m
LS460 5.06m
LS460 L 5.18m !!!

(Range Rover L322 is 4.98m)

Size matters not, they have buttons to both Parallel park and Park arse end in - wouldn’t stress myself by DIY parking - Pah!

Also for all you LS460 lovers, all 5.18 metres of bmthNick1981's LS460-L steering rack has been replaced according to the history on the ad. Surely due a berth on this thread soon.
If the foldy mirror and the boot closer were fixed, I'd find it very hard not to buy this.
Could be negotiating points. If the boot still opens on the plipper I don't think I would care too much about auto close. The LS430 I looked at at the weekend seemed to need awkward fiddling with a key to open the boot (apparently "just happened") which did put me off, but if the plipper worked to open it that would have been adequate. Foldy mirror fail I could live with. Better if passenger side fails I guess as you parallel park mostly on LHS of road, so good to fold driver side in.

Bmthnick1981 does seem open to offers. If you want the LWB model it seems a bargain and as I mentioned earlier it has had a replacement steering rack already. Despite this car being about 5 miles from me I am sticking to my LS430 plan!

Those issues don't put me off in the slightest, sadly my biggest 'issue' with it is the black leather. I'm a sucker for cream interiors on cars like this.

Likewise as picky as it is I’d of been on my way down to buy it if it was cream inside.

On which note without wishing to break any forum rules. Somebody I know *cough* will have his 430 for sale in the next week or so, with fully functioning boot ... I need to try either an L322 or LS460 next (which is another topic).

I’m the opposite, I really don’t like light interiors to the point that the outside colour of the car is secondary.
The car I have now is silver, a colour that I said I wouldn’t have again but the other cars available in nicer hues came with cream leather,

The only issue I have with my mirror is it does wobble about a bit, I'd say it swivels in by about 10 degrees very freely before it meets resistance. I'm hoping behind the cover is some way to tighten it up.

Legnum VR4, £4750, rapid and LPG’d, given the curious interest in JP stuff it will be interesting to see if it floats any boats.

I always think my LS430 looks quite small these days next to other things on the road. The latest Passat looks quite a lot bigger overall.

Even next to the xc90 from the other end of the driveway it looks positively compact in comparison smile (At least thats my logic it won't fit through the garage door though)

News like this isn't good for an S211 owner whose E55 is a whisker away from 160,000 miles. At least I'm spared the diesel woes.

Had it almost three years now and somehow have yet to lose at SBC/Airmatic bingo.
I'm about 24,000 miles behind you and mine needs about £1500-2000 spending on it, which I'm currently saving up for (crying face).

The colour is superb, black / red interior would be fine if the red wasn’t extended to the door cards; it’s too much.
As an aside, someone mentioned on the “Things which annoy you beyond reason” thread, the lack of engine bay photos, something which also annoys me about advertisements; a reflection of fewer having an interest in mechanical matters these days I suppose. frown

True enough, but a clean engine bay, without a layer of decomposing vegetation blocking drainage channels inspires more confidence in maintenance standards than one which is dusty or covered in a film of oil mist, such as the one owner, full history, recently serviced 5 series which I recently declined.
