That seems like an absolute bargain, as noted they break for not much less than that, I think a managed retreat from it would be minimally expensive aside from fuel costs! Run it until the next MOT and see what's what.
You wouldn't even need to break it, if it dies, put it on ebay for a £1 with all the faults listed and I guarantee it will go for over a grand, plus someone will come and take it away without you needing to get it somewhere.
Sorry, that's usually what I mean by "break" it, i.e. pilfer the big-ticket bits of trim if there are any, then stick it up on no reserve.

I can never quite decide if I like the looks of the Mk3 GS, sort of feel it can lose the grill lights at the front and the back looks very "full" and that it looks higher than the rest of the car.

In even less interesting news, the Mk3 GS has the same oily bits as my Crown, old picture but CDG will be happy with the digital clock between the swinging vents on mine;
That's the money shot alright!

I agree with you on the GS styling actually; never looks completely finished to me.

Crumbs, that looks tremendous.

A W168 reminds me, has anyone heard from derin lately? I haven't seen a reply of his in a while, I hope he's alright.
Gonna have to disagree there. Used to have to drive one as a courtesy car from my local Merc indie, also my niece had one. Most hateful little pieces of excrement it's ever been my misfortune to suffer. Leather seats and a prestige badge can not save the overall nastiness of these dreadful wee motorised turds. I can generally find a positive in any car, but not these. It's like sitting on a three-legged bar stool in a giant industrial washing machine and having someone outside switch it on.

Purely out of interest, how does working on a W211 compare to earlier, classic Mercs? Having done a front suspension refresh and rear bag replacement on mine, I thought it was an absolute bd to work on - poor access, over-complicated design etc. Are the earlier models any better?
Well, I scraped my knuckles quite badly... in repeatedly removing my wallet from my back pocket... the only work that I have done is interior fettling, clips/etc and the camshaft position sensor.

I hope so too. We've lost a few of our number actually. r129sl posts comparatively rarely nowadays (although he might still be recovering from his epic steal of a G wagon deal) and bob-lad has definitely gone walkabout.

At least that irritating bloke E65Ross has disappeared. Coming here and soiling the thread with his Corolla nonsense; I'm glad we lost him. smile

Totally agree, remarkably unpleasant things to drive. My 2nd wife had a 2003 A140 when we met and I thought it's tendency to switch motorway lanes at the slighest puff of wind was alarming. Worst car I've had outside of comedy rubbish like old Allegros.

Ironically, considering how much I hated it, I sold it, bought it back once, sold it again, and then bought it back a final time and gave it to my girlfriend who had just learned to drive. It made it 10 months before she smashed it up, but it's crash performance was pretty good!

In a bygone age, I used to live in Jersey where in 2002, I bought a new MINI. What relevance does that have, literally no one is asking?

In Jersey, the BMW, Mini, Smart and Mercedes agent were all one and the same (since then VW, Audi, Porsche, Bentley and Aston Martin have all been added to the same site). Due to the MINI’s spectacular unreliability (£8k, ex-VAT, of warranty work in the first 2 years), I drove an awful lot of BMW and Mercedes group cars between 2002 and 2005.

As such, I can largely agree with you, having driven most variants in period. From dim-recollection, all of them had hateful interior plastics, marginal ergonomics and:

A140swb manual
No redeeming features. Slow, cramped, tiny inside and a hateful gearbox…that needed to be used due to absence of power

A160lwb auto
Slow, tedious, not wholly unpleasant…but dreadful ride, conceptual handling and you’d have to have really wanted a Mercedes badge to buy one. On Jersey, it had a sort of niche (if you didn’t realise/care how much it cost, needed to move 4 people below 60mph in a small-footprint vehicle and weren’t in a hurry, it might have been sort of okay…but…)

A190lwb auto
Slightly less slow than A160. Fit for one (very narrow) purpose.

A210swb auto
Less pleasant than 160 & 190. Seemed to do nothing but kick down and spin its front wheels.

If that is anywhere near as good as it looks, it’s a cracker.

Although if a close threadist could pop along with a wet wipe for the seller’s camera lens, that would be great.

Agree but the MoT history suggests you may have quite a bit of corrosion to deal with...

I've just knocked up an ad for my early R129 and posted it in one of the usual places. Some eagle eyed threadists may remember that I threatened to sell it a while back, and a few asked me to post a notification them if the ad went live.

It's cheap, and needs work, but good thread fodder. It was purchased via these hallowed pages through an esteemed member, and hopefully may sell the same way. Just without the esteemed member bit.

Very slightly lowered and on bigger wheels that would look very nice. Great value.

Well written ad, seems fairly priced too. Could you add some interior photos?

Asking for a friend obviously as when the half-a-barge Volvo goes I will be looking to replace it with something small and economical and not a GS450h, honest guv...
