Thinking out loud... I have a very unusual urge to buy one of these, and put it into a very dry lockup for a decade or so.

I can imagine these becoming pretty collectable in the future.

What you need is to buy every cheap broken one you come across and split it into parts and wait until the rest of the supply dries up before charging insane prices to those who desperately want to keep theirs on the road. See CX-basis for business model.

Mini barge with a not mini engine:

2002 CLK 500 72k miles

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201...

A discrete rapid progress machine, surely?

I guess the concern will it be of the 2002 vintage.

Would you part with 4bags for it? 2002 must make it a niche market so should haggleable?
The V8 is more reliable than the V6 in these and fuel economy isn't too much worse. But a 2002 may still be hiding some significant rust, that wasn't sorted till 2004.
I really like the look of a late 5.5 litre CLK500 but my ex-MIL had a 2007 CLK220 kompressor from new and it was absolutely riddled with faults. The roof has failed halfway open or closed more times than I can remember, the trim rattles like an 80s Fiat, and they had a number of "failed to proceed" incidents all before it was 5 years old. I'm sure they aren't all like that, but I've heard enough tales of woe about them to know I don't want to risk it.
Sounds like my dad's CLK350 cab he had from new. Piece of junk it was.

So we're saying this is a bad idea?

I like the idea of something similar to that...red leather, coupe with the 5.5 engine. I imagine that they don't exist though.

Leather coloured aside, that's the same spec as my old man's. It was a great looking car, for sure. It was just poorly built (it was a March 2006 build).

I love the colour, but that hideous seat design and the rouched leather in the door cards vomit

I know this may be controversial on this thread, but why are so many (but not all) German interior so bloody tasteless?

Looking for some wisdom from the collective beard-mind; You may remember that I was trying to sell my Rover Vitesse last year - featured on PH here https://www.pistonheads.com/regulars/ph-spottedyky... - but it was the wrong time of year and Brexit plus the looming General Election meant the market was very low and I didn't want to let it go for peanuts.

Anyway, here we are in 2020, it's a new year, things have stabilised politically, the car is still advertised on Car and Classic and a few enquiries have come in this week including one from a chap in the USA who is willing to pay the asking price, but it will need to be shipped to him in New York. I've checked him out (he's a lawyer, legit as far as I can tell from his website etc and he already owns a Rover P6 cool) but I'd like to know if anyone has experience selling their car abroad and what pitfalls I should be aware of - assuming he is who he says he is.

Thanks!

Totally agree - these become more and more appealing as time goes on. Never much of a fan when they were current and everywhere, it pains me to remember the amount of part-ex'd BX's that were more-or-less given away during my trading days.
(There was once a BX GTi 16v in red that I took £25 for, from a lad who worked in the Tyre & Exhaust place behind the pitch. Okay, it was a bit scabby, but £25? Jesus Christ.)

In other news, folks...

Some of you regular Bargistas might have been wondering where Derin has gotten to lately. I do actually recall seeing several queries and virtual scratched-heads in the last few months.

I had a brief email chat with him this weekend and it transpires that life has been - not to put too fine a point on it - pretty fking terrible for him in the last few months, following some rather unfortunate and unexpected events in his personal life.

He asked me to pass on his regards to the thread and hopes everyone will understand his decision to stay away from these 'ere parts for the time being.

That said, I'm going to take it upon myself to say that any contact from threadists/messages of support/anything otherwise probably wouldn't be out of order smile

Here's a link to his profile:

Go to the BMW Classics site where there's a contact option.

Hope things get better soon. He bought the Barolo Red 190 off me just before he went 'off the radar' so to speak. Nice guy.

Main issue historically was being comfortable that you had 100% cleared funds in the bank before releasing the car. In the buyer is legit, this shouldn't be an issue and current systems make it easier than fannying about with banker's drafts for foreign banks etc.

Assuming they'll use a local agent to collect and transport the car, it shouldn't be too difficult. Always worth doing what you are to establish exactly who it is you're dealing with. Any doubts, don't do it.

We’ve had a 2006 C180 in the nobrakes garage for the last 10years and it’s perfectly adequate with no rust or rattles.

In the sub £5k market I think it’s best to be of a broad mind when it comes to incidentals such as trim. Ok, it’s important in the search for bargius ultimatus, but tbh who cares if it’s leatherette or cloth at that price.

Plus, if kak leather options put folk off that’d arguably more “thread”as it reduces prices further others with a lower limit (aka pint gauge or willoby number)

Christ on a bike - having had to retire early, buy an SUV and move across country would be enough for anyone, and his luck has gotten worse?

Seriously hope things perk up for him soon. In the meantime, I’ll re-evaluate my current situation and count my blessings once more.

Reserve not met at £4800.

Do it may appear on A/T at what he was looking for.

It’s only worth what anyone wants to pay for it...

Hello all and Happy New Year!

Land Cruiser update: The recent wet weather has produced all manner of electrical gremlins. They vary from car not locking or unlocking by the remote to lights staying on in the dash like the seat belt warning light to not engaging reverse. I suspect it's a bad door seal or blocked sunroof drain as the passenger's footwell had a puddle and very wet plastic panel near the door hinge after last week's heavy rain.

Moving on, I saw this video on the LS 400 Coach Edition . I wonder what made this edition different to the normal LS400?

Tis true. But eBay is rarely the place to get a decent/respectable/fair price for anything.
