Amy thoughts on this set of wheels ?

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201...

I may only have a few driving years left and I would want to take a trip from the south coast up to Scotland for a week or so.

If this is a last hurrah, then shouldn’t it have a petrol V8 (+++) in while you (we all) still can?

Cannot believe in this day and age people still write a car ad in CAPSLOCK. Is it for all those blind old biddys?

The MOT history stacks up, but Gerald must have driven it wearing golf shoes to have destroyed the pedal rubbers in under 40k miles. Looks clean enough, and while I’m a fan of that engine it can throw a few wobbles with turbos, inlet manifolds and oil coolers.

Edit: As per Macron’s post, if it’s a last hurrah, I’d agree with the V8 suggestion - indeed, go V12 for the full blaze of glory!

You are correct, the dream would be a V12 S600 - The reality is that in 1975 I was not expected to walk again, and I have now been out of work for almost 2 years. This means that finance is a serious consideration. A V6 diesel will have sufficient bhp for me at this trip.

Sorry, I was typing my reply to Macron when you replied to my post.

What do the thread think of this?

£2495.

I cannot speak for the thread, having not been amongst the nominated top tier of this thread and certainly not amongst the snobbiest, but in my view, expect to be shouted at enthusiastically by the CAPSLOCK-KING, whilst handing the man your cash, with no negotiation, one way ticket, forecourt shot etc.

Then bear responsibility for the next volume of Lexus loving thread tedium until R129SL pops up and nudges us collectively back into Euro-barge loving senility.
I wouldn't be surprised at the seller being like that.

However, how the seller behaves is not the cars fault, so if it's a gem it could be worth the efffort.

I was more concerned at the very low mileage over the last decade.

However if there is a 1-5 barge thread meet up, then we can all line up with one of each colour LS430, biglaugh.

Yes caps adverts are a bit annoying. You can only find what is advertised though.

I guess a cheap reliable SC430 would be the best way to keep the thread going, smile.

No worries. The diesel will be more economical than a petrol and brings tons of torque to the party, but the OM642 can bring a few issues to what is already a complex and potentially costly to repair chassis. They’re generally well built cars though, and stand up to miles well - low mileage and periods of inactivity and pootling short distances probably does them fewer favours ironically.

Tut. That's not how it works.
How does it work? That volvo is twice as nice as Holly. So there.
Just as puny man cannot comprehend the vastness of the universe, you're blithely playing with dangerous concepts here. I find it frightening in scale and, frankly, heretical.

It's pitchfork time.

Pah, that's rich coming from the man who developed a desirability scale without considering the Theron metric.
The Theronosphere is simply beyond us.

Holly likes chips, beer and thinks trumping is hilarious. Much more thread.

There’s no point in any of us losertrons getting ourselves in a tizzy about Theronomics.
Thanks for shattering my dreams Jim.
The metric should be as eclectic as the thread spectrum....

A Bellucci scale would be apt for this thread, considering the faded beauties over which we lust, so fervently.

In that case why lumber yourself with a 13 year old diesel soon to be banned from town centres, with expensive consumables, and in prime "lots of diesel bits to go wrong" territory? Could you hire a car for the trip, where reliability/ wear is someone else's problem, and have something less potentially troublesome if your other use pattern is smaller trips? You've only got to look at a few S class ads to see "£xxxx spent in the last year" on nothing in particular to know they're not a cheap steer.

We see them all the time, and I'm not a fan of beige leather, but can those dirty beige leather drivers seats ever be restored back to anything close to their original colour?

Oh, and I went to school* with Mel

*= well I was there at the same time, she is a bit older than me.

I noticed this when I was looking around, not seen such filthy front seats for a long, long time.

Stinky 2.1 diesel, but seriously, look at Pic 2, how plumpy does the velour look in the back of this manual £2k Peugeot 605 look?

Not *actually* sure I'd be telling prospective buyers it "runs well on biodiesel", as we all know what that means, but still, Joe Public would get a nice waft of chips every time you went past...

For the same outlay you can get a CL or S500 of the same generation. I really wouldn't buy the diesel, especially if it's a last hurrah.

Droplinks are currently the bane of my life. Having changed the springs on my Omega, got it tracked, and the droplinks decided to bed in on the way home and loosen off.

Then found a snapped spring on the non-barge vRS, ended up at le garage because it's a pig of a job. Then got it tracked. And the droplinks decided to... As above.

So an hour lifting and dropping cars, pulling wheels off, to tighten four nuts on stupid bloody components...

Macron and Krikkit, thanks for your thoughts.

I think that the single malt whisky affected my thought processes last evening.

In the cold light of day I see the sense of Macrons suggestion of hiring a car for the rare long distance trips, and keeping my Skoda for cheap local motoring.

It looks like I shall not become a bargist.

Good idea. A Jag XJ would be wonderful plus no running costs to bear.
