Far over budget and at Maison de Shill, but what a beast (GL63 AMG): https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MERCEDES-BENZ-GL63-AMG-...

A friend has one and they are hilarious (and very rare).
How good would it have been to have picked up Greta from the station in that?!

I don't think that they're that rare. The only petrol variants in the facelift version were GL63s.

I used to see a fair few when I lived in Germany as I was near a MB factory, hilarious and a great noise.

Still doesn’t top a G63 and I actually once saw / heard a G65 (!).

I picked up the w124 today. The steering is so much nicer. Very nice comments from the young chap who helped warm it up for the MOT!

£633+VAT. MOT, a proper service, steering drag link, steering damper, air/fuel filters, HT leads, fix door lock which was loose and a few other bits. Back soon for the suspension refresh.

I know we are rather a Merc-centric bunch, but I have a feeling that it wore a Dodge or Chevy badge rather than a three pointed star (which, looking at it, wouldn’t be too hard to imagine), we’d probably all be pointing at it and laughing.

The facelift is fairly well judged, in my view. It also does that thing very well, whereby it immediately makes the preceding model look outdated!

It’s not one of the greats, is it.

But what else does what it does better?

FFRR only has 5 seats. Discovery too normal. X5 is too small. XC90 mk1 too old. XC90 mkII too expensive. Q7 too Audi.

Lincoln Navigator might be the answer. But LHD and even more non-U.

My friend who owns one has the following terrible conundrum:

- has lots of money
- loves AMG and Brabus Mercs (a family tradition)
- has 4 kids
- wife wants a 4x4

It’s a really amusing car.

I have the 190e booked in for an MOT at work (MB dealer) I'm a couple of weeks. Hoping for it to be kind to me!

What do we think of this car thread?

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2002-52-MERCEDES-E500-V...

I looked at this but decided against it before, however I can't remember why, (maybe the chrome front number plate, laugh).

It seems to be reasonable mileage, no obvious rust in the pictures, can't tell what tyres it's running. Seems to have an impressive spec, although no Command?

What should I be asking about being replaced in the history, SBC brake pump, does this have a mixed coolant/gearbox oil radiator, perhaps new radiator/fluid change? Anything else, i take it this will be a 5 speed auto?.

Perhaps an offer including a fresh MOT.

Thanks for your thoughts/experience.

I looked at one with ventilated seats and the solar roof, no idea why I didn't buy it, wish I had. It was a lot more than that at the time though!

It seems as though the original buyer deliberately requested an elegance simply to build an awesome specification to their requirements. Heated rear seats is an indulgence.

The mot is relatively clear and consistent and the price is compelling. Distronic too... it seems like a good' un, but yes, SBC, saggy suspension etc. No mention of oil leaks on the MOT, though could be obscured by the undertrays, so you'd have to have a good look in the bay and identify any shiny surfaces. Additionally, engine and gearbox mounts may need doing.

I think that it would be the seven speed gearbox in this and possibly an early version which would mean that it might stick in gear at some point like mine (after 150,000 however, following a transmission fluid change at 130,000); the upshot is that the transmission module isn't available separately on these early models and so the valve body has to be ordered at the same time which won't give you much change from £2,000.

EDIT: Upon a re-read it simply has 'cruise control', I confused 'speedtronic' (whatever that is) with 'distronic'. To make up for it, there is a leather and wood steering wheel!

Thanks, I didn't notice the heated rear seats, they look perforated, I wonder if they are cooled as well.

COMFORT VENTILATED FRONT SEATS.
PANORAMIC TWIN GLASS SUNROOF.
INTEGRATED SOLAR PANELS IN SUNROOF.

The ventilated seats appeal, often get hot in a shirt otherwise, whilst perhaps heavy the twin glass sunroofs could give a nice increase in light.

Do I remember correctly that the solar panels can be used to keep the ventilation system going in hot weather?

I think the SBC unit is cheaper to get hold of now, circa £500, still a fair cost once fitted.

I'd best askk about the gearbox too, find out if it is a 7 speed as the gearbox could be a massive cost if it breaks and would write the vehicle off for e unless it was still under warranty.

Do these engines have a habit of leaking oil expensively? Out of interest, what year is yours?

I think speedtronic is basically a settable speed limiter, so eg you don't go over 50 in roadworks or 30 in local roads etc.

Thanks for the advice so far.

The M113 engine is well regarded, pretty tough and isn’t renowned for oil leaks. It will have the early version of the 7G box, and as Michael has experienced there isn’t a relatively cheap fix if the conductor plate goes. Speedtronic is MB’s standard cruise control, which does indeed incorporate a speed limit option too.

I’m pretty certain ventilated rear seats were not an option on 211s, I presume they’re perforated only to match the front (that’s the case in my GL but, given some comments above, the less said the better here about that car!). The solar panels do keep the ventilation panels going to circulate air around the interior when parked up, but I think it was discontinued either with the 805 or full facelift, so I wonder if it proved unreliable.

Good to know the engine is pretty solid, the gearbox is a concern though if it has a very expensive possible failure.

I may ring up and ask them to send over the extra pictures and ask if there is anything in the history about the SBC, gearbox and radiator? having any work done, they are 18 years old now.

It appears it has been out of tax since December 2nd, so possibly traded in around 3 months ago.

It sounds like those with the solar roof like it, however they only had it available for 2 years, maybe it was just too expensive.

Small thread victories continue. The Lux equivalent of the MOT is the CT and the centralised testing stations are renowned for cutting no-one any slack ever. The 18 year old Lexus has just passed however, so the knuckle-biting tension is relieved.

Are those rear lights stock? I thought the W211 had different rear lights.

It appears they are different, I wonder if that's one of the reasons I passed it by last time I looked.

With a fresh MOT and a quid or 2 off it could be very nice, I mean who is the target audience except us in this day and age.

However 3 months and a day later, if it has a failed 7G gearbox, it will be scrap really.

Tough choice. Might have to pass on this one, but its a very nice spec car, if a slightly boring colour.

With the new reg plate due tomorrow? maybe more barges will appear for sale, LS430, 728, 740, 9-5 Aero etc.
