Wouldn’t touch an M car unless from a BMW dealer with a gold plated warranty ...

It's the same size as the E46 M3 give or take 30mm. Which explains why it's almost the same weight. Actually I am surprised the gap is so small as modern cars have more safety, airbags, equipment etc... Making it lighter would have been great but would have been very expensive.

BMW have also managed, have they not?

E46 M3 and M2 have the same dimensions, both are powerful M cars that weigh the same despite all of the extra airbags and safety equipment.

I imagine it’s very easy to keep the MX5 light, I’m not sure I could say the same for the M2

How much would it have cost new with those options on it? I'm guessing £44k was for the base spec model.

DCT, radar CC, HK and other bits...I'd guess around £53k ballpark new?

Possibly the best all round car we have ever bought. Can’t match the gt4 for ultimate grip and feel but still very good. Highly recommended.

That’s the thing, from what I’ve heard about the M lites is that they’re brilliant daily drivers but not very good on track or on the limit compared to an M car. Fair enough but after following Joe Achilles on YT and IG for a while, he says they’re an LSD and a decent suspension set up away from being even ‘better’ than an M2.

I’m not discrediting the M2 as it is a good car but I’d rather buy a 68 plate M240i with 5k ish miles for 25 and keep the rest. If I was to go on track days or drive it hard, i’d spend the change on an LSD and suspension.

The M2C is a different story as it’s USP is the S55 engine and that itself is worth the extra.

Looking at the spotted M2, despite the criticism and lack of proper M seats and driver modes, they’ve held their value very well, 29k for a 2016 model is very good.
The M140i is a cracking car, I love mine but aesthetically it looks very ordinary be next to an M2 and the handling should be better. I like the DCT gearbox too, which in its most aggressive mode adds a bit more drama etc. I think they’re fine in normal driving too having driven my uncles E92 M3 a reasonable amount.

The problem for me is the M2C which gets better seats and a few more colour options, plus the different engine etc. Plus the reviews seem to intimidate that it drives better.

C'mon now....... who's gonna be the first to bemoan the fact that it isn't a manual, and for that single reason they are not going to buy it? wink
I'm very predictable and I did feel a tinge of disappointment when I saw the gear lever in the photo. The DCT is very good for sure but I'd personally want the manual in this(even though it won't be that good to use in typical BMW fashion).

That’s a good question. I’ve not driven the M2 - how does it compare to M4?

The car is advertised as having a full BMW service history including running-in service. As far as I know nothing prevents a new owner from taking out a BMW insured warranty on the car, even if the new car warranty has expired, and given that the mileage is below 60,000, the annual premium would probably be sub £1000.

Assuming the insured warranty is a must, the financial benefit of theoretically purchasing it from a BMW dealer is less than a grand. The 5 year service pack is transferrable regardless of who is selling it.

If a lower price reflects the additional purchase of the first year’s warranty are you not then in exactly the same position as buying from a BMW dealer?

If I was in the market I must admit that I'd find it very hard to choose between the two. For me the M4 looks better(I can't get on with the M2's rear end), and the interior is a bit plain Jane In the M2 as well for me.

You can have a different colour interior in the M4 to jazz it up a bit, and also choose from far more exterior colours(I'd love one in San Merino Blue).

Not really high miles for a three year old car is it?

When did people get so precious about using their motors?

Looks a good buy with all the maintenance done. Should be loosening up nicely.

I don't think it's high miles.
I have done 25k last year in my m135i and it's not even my daily driver.

M2 prices due to m2comp are going down

I think I'd like an m2 comp as my next car, if not an m3 f80.

I don't think the m2 would be different enough engine wise to my m135i to be honest.
M2 comp though....yay.

30k is a lot of money but this m2 is a lot of car!

Sure - but what about driving them? Which is best and why?

I've driven the M4 but not the M2. They are both a similar weight so I can't really see them being all that different to drive in fairness. If the M2 was 300kg lighter then I'd say that, but at the same weight I can't understand how you would separate them.

To these eyes the M3 is even better looking than the M4 because of the rear arches. Agree re the colours of the standard M2; they’re somewhat lacking for me. At least the Comp is available in Sunset Orange.

The M2 is seriously tempting though at sub £30k.

Completely agree. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw this article in fairness. The M2 was a car that I was really pleased that BMW made.
