For me, the stupid "sporty" SUV type ownership these days has become far more a massive ball swinging excercise than actually wanting a true performance car.......

I can understand a nice 1.4 petrol high driver position car, but not a "warm" or "hotter" version, its just fake and pointless.

And thats before you get to the Cayenne Turbo ssss g63 q7r etc etc

Who wants to drive 2.5 tonnes of minibus fast ? confused

Why didn't the call it the Corsair? Or the Zephyr?

Or back to Fords roots... Anglia, a far more apt name than puma.
Vauxhall now have the viva name back..

Saw a new Puma on the road the other day. It’s a car that definitely looks better in the flesh. But still don’t know why it’s called a Puma.

Actually, as it a pseudo SUV/Crossover, maybe it should have been called the "Popular"? Or the "Populaire" for a more exotic (or not wink) sound?

Saw one in the flesh today in local car park. It was on German plates.

Just looked so generic and dull. If you took the badges off it, nobody would have a clue what is was on the scool run.

biglaugh Who made you the 'preference police'?

Manufacturers will make what they think people will want, and guess what, people will buy what they want, and right now that's SUVs. So the OEMs make SUVs, and they offer a range of those SUVs, just like they used to do for what you would probably call more 'normal' cars. From base to high spec, from small engine to bigger engine, etc. SUVs are increasingly the new 'normal'.

We may not like it, but that's what the markets wants. And if nothing else, I'm confident this one will drive well.

I think we can all agree that, after sticking their iconic Mustang badge on a gopping electric SUV, Ford really don't give a fk about their heritage and the more of this crap they can pump out and sell by recycling names the better.

maybe if you're talking about the UK - actually no. The Fiesta and Focus aren't exactly sales failures. If you're talking the US the F150 is still the sales daddy over there

I saw a Puma on the road the other day.
Looked (i) big (ii) gopping (iii) pointless

If people buy them, then fair enough, hell, they bought the Ford Ecosport and that was loosely based on a brick with a grille.

However, are they being bought for the fashion of the SUV? I was given a Mokka X as a courtesy car this week and it's truly undesirable. The seating/driving position is bad, the performance is turgid, the boot is small and the only thing is was good at is running over speedhumps, so maybe that is its skill set. I've pretty much left it on the drive and ignored it.

I am not against recycling names because I know it's a real ballache to find a name that is not registered - hence why Japanese car companies began making names up. Austin had to buy Montego off Ford and that is still a mystery to me.

What jars, in this case, is that horrid front end which desperately tries to forge a link between this and a well-loved little sports coupe.
They have plenty to recycle - Orion, for example.
I understand the need to avoid legendary names like Cortina and Capri and names like Escort and Corsair wouldn't last two minutes in today's society (similarly Cougar) but there are others in their inventory and Fusion would have fitted in with their "begins with F" lower range.

The very similar Kuga seems to be doing OK.

I'm not sure if it puts people in mind of a predatory, attractive older woman or not.

I saw a new Puma in the flesh the other day too and it looks bland and somewhat gopping. A real pity.

Having said this, you kind of can't blame Ford for doing what its done. The market wants crossovers; say what you like about them, but the Juke, Mokka et al, they sell very well. On the other hand I'm struggling to think of a single coupe at the moment in the affordable end of the market other than perhaps the Toyota GT86...the small coupe has died. so maybe no surprise the Puma badge has been relaunched on another ugly crossover....

Hopefully fashion will one day come full circle.....as a big fan of 1990-2000 era Fords (we own three in our family) I'm sad that they dont do a modern "proper" Puma.
