The R8 seems to be a bit of a forgotten supercar. Maybe it's just me, but I hardly ever see them, and, price wise, it seems a bit over it's head at this level.

Sort of thought the original V8 R8 was the right way for Audi to be going - they really have to have an offering which is well south of £100k.....
The 2007 base spec V8 cost 77,000. Which adjusted for inflation is... 106,000.
I think the new car is fantastic value.

Great news. That's a huge amount of weight shed from the nose (nearly my bodyweight!).

I completely agree. The Original R8 was a handsome car. This MKII version isn't. It went too square.

The original R8 had a lovely V8 engine and a manual gearbox, and cost around £85k. This doesn't.

But because Audi made the TT so damn fast with the RS, the R8 couldn't be slower. So I guess Audi now class the TT-RS as the baby R8?

Shame really.

There was also talk a few years ago of an R4. A baby R8. But I guess the TT-RS scuppered that too?

Almost certainly, as Audi don't produce RWD cars, with the exception of the previous limited RWS R8.

I think a good, exciting and affordable electric car would actually be far more exciting right now. Good as this R8 will doubtless be, we've seen it all before. From Audi. For the last 10+ years.

There's a lot of stagnation going on right now. The 'member manuals crowd are right - plenty of old cars were great. It doesn't mean the new cars should be like the old cars. There's very little about the R8 that still appeals.

Inflation is inflation. I don't know anyone who's wage has increased nearly 40% in the last 12 years, do you?

Hmm... An electric supercar from Audi would be more groundbreaking and innovative, yes. However, not everything in the car world has to be groundbreaking and innovative - some recipes are just so good that they're always welcome. A mid-engined, rear wheel drive, 540bhp V10 supercar is always welcome, surely?!

Nice enough.

But I do hanker for a manual and a side blade.

Of course it's welcome.

Whenever I've got a new toy, part of it will be lifting the bonnet and showing my mates the engine.

Electric cars?

Average salaries have kept pace with inflation, yes. In fact they've risen slightly:

You probably haven't heard about this because most people are more vocal about stagnating salaries than constant pay rises. For starters, it's socially acceptable to complain if your wages haven't gone up, but not really acceptable to keep shouting about pay rises, when they're normally individual and those around you may not have been so lucky.

Maybe. But in 2007, it was competing against a 911 997 Gen 1. I've actually lost track of how many generations the 911 has moved on since then ( 4?), but this has moved 1 and you can still, just, get a 911 for under £100k. I know the current R8 is now a V10 but my point was a slightly less powerful car under £100k may well be a more enticing proposition .....

Does anyone recall the ad for the previous V10, where to get around the advertising rules where you can't "glorify speed", they ran it through the gears on a rolling road, with the engine exposed?
A V10 at full chat should be enjoyed with the roof down, surely.

Wonder what the buyers of the limited edition version think about this one?

Yes the new 992 911 Carrera S is available from £93k, however it has 400BHP, the R8 has 600. The R8 is more of a competitor for the 911 Turbo S, the 991 had 570BHP, so the new 992 will probably have around 600.

RWD NA V10 in the days of everything being turbos/hybrids and people aren't impressed. And as for those saying it should be manual... I guarantee if a manual was offered less than 10% would be actually ordered with one.

Great cars, moaned at a lot of the time by people who have never driven one.

True but I personally couldn't look past a proper 911 for similar cash. It's a fine car but time has passed it by.
