RE: BMW M5 Touring (E34) | Spotted

The estates were LHD only.
Great cars (I am biased as I have a 3.8 saloon - one of the last 50). They really are special things and are obviously worth what someone is willing to pay. £50k probably represents the investment that has been pumped in over the years to keep it going. I have certainly spent a fortune keeping mine fit and healthy over the last 12 years, because there really is nothing I would want to replace it with, and certainly not one of the newer M5’s.

“ Name a more desirable fast estate car. We'll wait...”
There’s no need to wait. When it comes to fast estate, RS2 is a faster by all means, and most importantly a better estate car as being an estate practicality is one of the most important factors.
Not being a German car fan I really can't tell one Audi fast estate from another, but an M5 estate... now that's distinctive. There’s no need to wait. The fact is in the early 90s both BMW and Audi only offered two types of estate. BMW had 3-Series estate and 5-Series estate. Audi had 80 estate and 100 estate. If you care to google photos of those 25 years old estates, it wouldn’t be hard to notice how similar a 5-Series estate is to the 3-Series of the same era. And the M5 estate really only had very few exterior changes from a regular 5-Series estate. Whereas, at around the same time Audi’s 80 estate looked quite different from its 100 estate. What’s more Porsche really made an effort to differentiate RS2 from a regular 80 estate not only in their performance, but also how they looked.

How is M5 estate more distinctive to look at from a regular 5-Series estate when compared to RS2 and the regular 80 estate? Please enlighten me...

The E34 M5 is far more desirable and cooler than that VAG nonsense. The fact is in the early 90s both BMW and Audi only offered two types of estate. BMW had 3-Series estate and 5-Series estate. There's a nice one up for auction this weekend in France -

That French one has much more appeal. Slightly lower miles, lovely Violet paint, and a more realistic estimate at €28-40k. Wonder how much it will end up going for...https://www.aguttes.com/lot/96041/11058414

I thought we are all petrol heads discussing cool 90s fast estate here on a car enthusiasts’ forum, didn’t realise somehow there’re people think we are debating political issues...Good job I don't want one as it feels like a 10-15 grand car to me. There are plenty of these in Europe for 25-35,000 Euros.
I went to Munich Legends to look at a car once. They told me the price and then told me how much more I'd be spending to get it right. Maybe I misunderstood. Either way off I went.

Don't know how I missed this, been a busy week.
E34 M5 of any variety is peak ///M Car to me, you can keep your E30 M3s etc...
They're so special in every way, a manual E34 is an enjoyable car to drive with any engine, but when you put what is in my opinion the finest Straight 6 BMW have ever made into one then that's a fantastic recipe. My Dad owned a late, pre 'LE' UK 3.8 and it was a fantastic car all round.
Better on fuel than his (now mine) E34 540i auto, never missed a beat, never used oil, was just as happy around town as it was stretching it's legs on the motorway. He wanted to a prove a point about how flexible the engine was on day, so took off from the lights in 6th, the car was more than happy to oblige.
They're a rather old suspension layout at the back, but it was the last BMW to have Semi-Trailing arms if I recall correctly? They'd got it down to a science by that point. He still maintains that the back end of an E34 or E32 feels far better than an E30. Back to back with my E39 my E34 feels a lot smoother over undulating surfaces and much more happy to be played round with at the limit.
However, in spite of all this... This is a truly ridiculous price. Yes it's a touring, yes it has been looked after, but it is not a £40k car. £25k for me.
Apart from that - I might be missing stuff... - everything else is usual E34 stuff, rust, heater motors, wiper mechanisms, rust, front suspension components, rust, the odd electrical issue and oh, rust. I'd bet that rust is less likely to be an issue on most M5s as they tend to be better looked after than your average E34 and front suspension components aren't ludicrously expensive. I think I spent around £300 replacing everything bar the anti-roll bar links and bushes on my 540i and I'm 99% certain the parts are interchangeable.
I can't help myself when I get talking about these cars, or any E34 for that matter... Ramble over...

Fantastic engine, probably my favourite in a BMW. But these 3.8 M5s take a lot of looking after. Not sure I’d rush to have another
I get where you're coming from, but I disagree ever so slightly. Many cars will have had the SLS ditched by now, throttle body balancing is DIY-able so it depends on how in-depth you want to get on the maintenance of your own car, if that car has floating front discs then yes, these can be expensive but I'd be tempted to replace them with a big brake kit if it was that important anyway. The 6 speed box seems to be the weak point and I don't think there's anyone rebuilding these still?Apart from that - I might be missing stuff... - everything else is usual E34 stuff, rust, heater motors, wiper mechanisms, rust, front suspension components, rust, the odd electrical issue and oh, rust. As for a more desirable estate, there’s a certain PH-er with the only RHD E34 Alpina B10 4.6 V8 Touring. IIRC he used to have one of these too.
Yes his E34 Estate is gorgeous, 1 of 1 iirc? Shares a garage with a one of 16(?) RHD E39 V10 V8 Touring too.Leins said:
The aforementioned RS2 might not necessarily be more desirable, but it is arguably more iconic.
For me the RS2 is less desirable, but I can't argue that it is more iconic. The E34 seems to be the forgot M5, everyone goes on about the E28 being the first of the line and having an M1 engine crammed into it, the E39 is the last 'analogue' M5 with a manual gearbox around the world, the E60 is the last N/A M Car etc... Whereas the E34 M5 is often overlooked, I've certainly seen more coverage of the Alpina B10 BiTurbo, usually alongside a Lotus Carlton. It's a shame though, because the E34 is such a high point, it's the last hand built M Car, the last M5 with a straight six (for the time being) at one point the M division even cooked up a 400bhp 3.8 for a few select customers, this is a specific output that wasn't matched for a 3.8 until the 997 Carrera S!I can't help myself when I get talking about these cars, or any E34 for that matter... Ramble over...

Sold for $120,000 a year or two ago. There were 20 Elektas made. 10 green and tan, 10 silver and blue, and to be honest the silver and blue does nothing for me
