Vauxhall's aren't as bad as they're made it to be. I had a MK4 astra 1.8 sport as my 2nd car when I had enough NCB to get something mild. It was cheap and more reliable than any vag product I've owned. Handled better too with less suspension work.

I'm not a Vauxhall fan boy, but that statement is complete nonsense. Vauxhall's are on par (more or less) with there rivals.

What would these 'knowledgeable' people buy instead that was far superior?

A Mazda or a Civic for instance would be a far more reliable choice in this case. Vauxhalls are crap, end of.

the vxr nurb' and clubsport had decent writeups and some fairly exotic parts...

Somewhere deep in Luton there were some engineers that really wanted to do a great hot hatch...but the donor car and interior was guff and they were just to expensive....hope they moved onto Renault...or Lotus...(or maybe even the airport)
I remember sitting in the VXR at the motor show and thought how nice it was inside with the black piano dashboard and amazing seats. Appreciate this isn't a VXR.

He drives one of the worst Subarus he could have bought. Now that is really crap.

And as we know the current Subaru range is dull as hell. Can't remember even seeing one on the road.

They did keep the M3s honest in the Touring Cars for a while in the early 90s

Used to love tuning in on a Sat afternoon with Murray Walker et al

I know it's off topic, but touring cars of the 90's were great, weren't they?

Cavaliers, Carinas, Primeras... All mixing it up and trading paint. Never missed a race on TV growing up. biggrin

I don’t have a link, but imagine this:

In car video, the car sits in the outside lane of a motorway and randomly accelerates and slows down. For an hour. It’s not Spielberg hehe

Its funny when people make generalisations about car brands, usually not based on experience.
My last car was a Vauxhall which was a good family car until it was written off last month. Ok, it was a dull drive, but it didn't break down in 2 and a half years and 34,000 miles.

On the other hand, the only car I've ever had to scrap due to an engine failure in my 31 years of owning a variety of cars, yup, a Subaru...Impreza Turbo, 1998, one of those models with the chocolate bottom end bearing....say no more!

..agree btw that Mazdas and Hondas are generally reliable.

Yes, but in a thread discussing whether a Corsa SOTW is any good or not, it's hardly relevant is it? There's no dispute as to whether the 90's were absolutely brilliant for BTCC, and the Cavalier and Vectra were fantastic in BTCC, but they were hardly anything more than an appliance on the road. I'd be interested for someone to tell me how my age has got me mixed up about it, because as I remember the Cavalier thread was full of hate about them?

I'm not talking about the touring car, I'm talking about the regular Cavalier; if you'd like to try and explain to me how the Cavalier was such a brilliant car and how my youth somehow blocks me from seeing that then by all means take a crack at it, but we both know the Cavalier was mediocre at best, excluding maybe the Turbo 4x4.
