It is hinted at in the video, though. 0-30mph in 1.5 secs wasn't a time originally given by Audi, but was measured by Autocar & Motor who made the McLaren F1 comparison.

Another thing that came later was the Nogaro Blue name (originally RS Blue).

Cool video, though, especially at 1:55 where the RS2 saloon used in development makes an appearance. Love it!

Thanks to those who mentioned that there was a RHD version. I knew someone who had a RHD S2 for many tears, but was obviously wrong about the RS2 being LHD only. Perhaps I should look again some time (but they cost a lot more now).

You could buy a new car in 89 that could do also uphold that claim
Not in estate format though but was a 5-door

A great car, but I'd rather have a B7 RS4 Avant.

Almost bought one of these about 20yrs ago, bought an Impreza Turbo instead.

When I test drove it from the MD in Eastbourne the salesman was very keen to point out it was an old car & not to expect too much.

Either way, I didn't gel with it, perhaps I needed an extended drive? Always wondered if I made a big mistake or not but had a lot of fun in my scooby the 4yrs I had it!

Enjoyed that a lot, I remember the first time I saw one of these at GTi international circa 96/7ish on the drag strip it was insanely quick, the noise was amazing.

The video is above

Here’s the Autocar road test that was the evidence for the Mac F1 beating claim - to 30 at least!

The RS2 figures were matched by the short-lived Minker Turbo Technics project ( based on an XR4x4 ) that Noel Edmonds opened the 1989 Top Gear Earls Court TV special with. They only sold about 9 cars though! Very expensive at the time

Tyre prices have come down a bit.

The Sierra Minker... I think I'm about to fall down a lunchtime rabbit hole:

Not surprising when a new 4x4 Cosworth was around £10k cheaper.

Plus, just to compare the RS2 test above, here are the Big Mac figures to 30

Once the late 90s arrived and the big-bhp Jap rally reps cane along then it wasn’t such an exclusive club ( beating an F1 to 30mph )

I don’t think so. In order for RS2 to be in any of RS3’s mirrors, RS3 has to be at least one car length ahead at 30mph. The figure Audi provides says the current RS3 can reach 30mph in 1.4 sec. However, when Autocar tested RS2 in real life condition, it achieved 30mph (true figure, not just shown on speedometer) in 1.5 sec. So if we presume the Audi’s official figure of 1.4 sec for the current RS3 is also the real world figure, then a simple maths calculation would get a result of RS3 being 1.34 meter ahead of RS2 when it reaches 30mph, which means RS3 would only be around 1/3 of car length ahead. Unfortunately, no current RS2 owners at least in the UK would allow anyone to really drug race their RS2s against the new RS3. Carwow did one drug race which involved RS2. But unfortunately it was clear it wasn’t driven to its limit (actually not even close).

No idea what drugs you're on about. You do seem to be contradicting yourself though.

I think the thing that impresses me most is the old cars managed it with a manual box and human right foot ......whereas most of the new stuff has a DSG/auto box and most likely launch control
Not that an actual gearchange came into play to reach 30 in the Audi or Sierra!

Let me put it simply for you.

First part of my reply was to prove your statement of “Both RS2 and McLaren F1 would be in an RS3's mirrors at 30 mph today“ is incorrect.

By using the figures from both Audi and Autocar, a basic 11+ level maths would prove at 30mph in a drug race RS2 would not be in any of the RS3’s mirrors as it would only be 1.34 meter behind.

Second part of my reply was simply stating a fact that currently no RS2 owners in this country are willing to drug race their cars to the limit considering how rare RHD RS2s are. But in the past people did as Autocar has shown us.

If you want to see 15 minutes of genuine 1980s Audi cheese, watch this official sales Audi video on the Sport Quattro with Walter Rohrl:

(Yes, it is in German)
