43 grand - luxury tax on a Passat. I'd be having the Superb 280 all day long. Or a V90.

Black wheels and matt paint look a bit faux gangsta! for a family car. You need a bit more chrome and bling I think.

No-one buys a Passat if they are also considering a 340i Touring or need simply a "lifestyle" estate - for many, the comfort, refinement, quality and badge are very appealing.

Unless you did the exact same route at the exact same speeds as the reviewer then your comparison is meaningless. ( I know you know that)

I would guess that you can easily get over 40 from these if you pootle along at ~55mph.
...Which kind of defeats the object of having this engine and gearbox
If you were after economy you would surely have the 2.0tdi?
They push the 1.5tsi as the panacea for emissions etc but I fail to see how that’s the case as the Passat I just had struggled on anything flatter than the Netherlands, having to drop down a couple of gears whereas my (written off) Leon ST would drop one gear at most. Tell me that this is better for the environment?
I don’t think the paint on this model suits it either btw...

Yeah, paint wise I dont mind it but its a bit like its trying to strike an RS3 style pose,

It sort of works but is sort of cringey like when a staid and normally awkward politician being a good sport for charity dresses up like a rapper with backwards baseball cap, big chain, saying "Yo" and crossing their arms making gang signs.

£43k!!!

for a Passat!!

I'm out.

Shame really, I've had the Golf R Estate and it was a riot, if a little too small (I'm 6ft 5in). I'll keep looking for a Superb 290 thanks, unless VWFS decide the only way to shift them is on a stonking lease deal (I wouldn't be surprised).

While this is a big improvement over the regular Passat, there is still something slightly off about the styling for me. I can't quite put my finger on what it is, but something about this generation has never looked quite right. The Superb is a much nicer looking car in my opinion, so that would probably swing it for me.

I imagine it will be a rare beast though, as the vast majority of buyers will plump for the diesel.

A friend told me recently that VW no longer makes the Passat since the Arteon came along. Not just that they didn't sell them in the UK, but that production had stopped. My initial reaction was 'I don't think that's true' but I was thinking back to the last time I had seen one. Google soon confirmed he was wrong, but it made me think. Passats used to be everywhere, and whilst they were never the cheap option, they sold well enough. I even owned a B6 a few years back. Maybe it's just my perception that sales have fallen off a cliff recently. My cousin works for VW and his family all get favourable rates (lease rates I assume). They all drive Skodas and Seats.

I do like these but 38.8 mpg on a long run? Is that something to be proud of?

I wouldn't say it's that good. We recently averaged 45.2 in a jaunt across France in my (316bhp) Audi BiTdi, with large dog and loads of 'stuff', and we weren't hanging around (speeding ticket confirms!). I know, I know, different driving conditions, drivers etc etc, but nonetheless...

Comparing a diesel to petrol is always going to show a difference though. Diesels are built for the motorway.

I have the R, I can get easily 40 mpg going from london to Cardiff, all day long, summer obviously this increases compared to winter mileage, like all these things, its conditions / driver related which no one trip is the same so impossible to make the same journey with same mpg.

i will go to cardiff again at christmas, will probably get around 40 mpg due to colder weather etc I easily see up to 3 mpg difference doing the same journey at different times even in winter.

I'd not really describe Passats as 'everywhere' back then - they were always more of a discerning choice.

But the same thing's happened (on a lower %age of the market share) as has happened to everyone else; Superbs and A4s have squeezed-out the middling brands. It's almost as if people want to be conspicuously unpretentious, or conspicuously pretentious. Inconspicuous consumption has lost its way among the lease deals.

List price of £43k is a bit irrelevant (apart from the luxury car tax) due to discounts, drive the deal quote £34k if you take VW finance at 2.9%. Slightly more than the Superb.

I get the appeal of these, quick, spacious, very subtle and it won't get stolen. Shame that I suspect it would just be a bit dull to drive.

I think you might be overthinking things a little smile

Miserable colour on what is just another dreary car.
As for the fuel economy, I can achieve the same on a run with our 330i, and that at least sounds nice.

Is this line really the whole "whats it like to drive" part of this review?

"VW retains a little more driver focus; turn in is sharper, feedback a little greater, pedal response a touch more immediate"

Also, went to spec one and this is only colour available, one wheel choice and one interior trim. Only option is a full size spare. DTD has 9K discounts available already though.

Could be a nice all-rounder with a re-map biggrin

We had an Allroad version for a couple of years. Steady and dull. Now have a V90 which is a class or two up in terms of interior. Neither were a fantastic driving experience, to be fair.

I don't really see how this is any more dreary than a middle-of-the-road BMW?

Clearly you haven't had much experience with 6 cylinder engines.

Obviously no one needs bling and chrome tat but it's more in keeping with the "look" than GT3 style black wheels and battleship grey paint. I'd feel a bit of a div turning up to the school pick up in this get up.
