I do like these but 38.8 mpg on a long run? Is that something to be proud of?

No matter it has 270bhp, it's still a brand new four pot with presumably the more efficient DSG option and I'd expect better than that.

For a car that size I would say it’s respectable.

Nice car. Would have to remap it’s though :-)
I got 36 mpg from my Forester STI on a long run recently. It has no aerodynamics and another 50bhp.

Of course no one would cross shop but I thought new cars were meant to give it all?
Unless you did the exact same route at the exact same speeds as the reviewer then your comparison is meaningless. ( I know you know that)

I would guess that you can easily get over 40 from these if you pootle along at ~55mph.
True, but even my 2005 Outback 3.0 (petrol) with permanent 4wd, a drivetrain from the stone age and Subaru's reputation for making thirsty cars will sneak into the 30s on a long motorway run, and that's doing between 70 and 80mph. If for some reason I took leave of my senses and pootled at 55mph I'm pretty sure I could get 40mpg too. So unless the reviewer was driving like a complete nutcase I'm not that impressed by 38.8mpg either.

Still, I do like these - if they did an Alltrack version I'd be very interested (once it had depreciated a bit).

43 grand - luxury tax on a Passat. I'd be having the Superb 280 all day long. Or a V90.
Yep, it's a shame they couldn't tuck it in behind the £40k chasm.

Black wheels and matt paint look a bit faux gangsta! for a family car. You need a bit more chrome and bling I think.

No-one buys a Passat if they are also considering a 340i Touring or need simply a "lifestyle" estate - for many, the comfort, refinement, quality and badge are very appealing.
Far better colour choices than the insipid grey that looks like primer awaiting paint and those awful black wheels.

Which aspect of one's lifestyle is enhanced by buying something other than a Passat/Superb(/Octavia?) Estate?

I've done 60k in a Passat R Line Estate over the past three years and whilst it is a wonderful mile muncher I've not once enjoyed a spirited drive in it. It's just not that kind of car. Unless this has significant suspension mods to compliment the added fizz I just can't see what market it is aimed at.

The front end looks like a Honda Civic....not sure anyone with £43k to spend would choose this over a BMW or Mercedes but as a nearly new or used proposition its quite good.

Clearly you haven't had much experience with 6 cylinder engines.
Oh that old chestnut. The one wheeled out by every BMW fanboy. I've driven and owned six cylinder cars. They have their good points and their bad points, just like anything else. Thankfully, I can appreciate engines of all configurations. There have been great six pots, appalling four pots and vice versa.

The EA888 isn't the most exciting four cylinder ever created, but it is very impressive and perfectly suited to a car of this type in a world where larger CC engines are no longer viable. And, the reality is, the vast majority of buyers simply don't care about the engine type anymore. If it offers the required performance/efficiency, then that's enough for most people.

I suspect your six pot BMW doesn't meet the same equipment/technology/safety/warranty standards as this Passat either so, in the real world, the comparison is a bit pointless, as no one looking to buy one of these is suddenly going to decide that they'd want an old BMW instead.

How much would the equivalent BMW or Merc be? I think I would prefer a 530i over this in terms of looks, but it would be interesting to see the cost difference. I just can't get on with Merc interiors, so that would be out for me.

Looks like it'll make good use of VW's somewhat boring but 'very efficient' 2.0 inline 4 + 4Motion setup.

I wish they'd stop painting cars flat grey though, it looks awful on a stock car.

I imagine that it's because it's a new, tight engine. My mechanically identical Superb 272 got noticeably better once it passed around the 5,000 mile mark.

It does a daily round-trip of 80 miles on the M6/M1, driven at the speed limits and averages just over 40mpg. Combined with a large tank it's enough to see almost 600 miles between fills, so I'm happy enough with that.

Ah the Passat wagon, every German salary-man’s choice: more prestige than a golf, not as ostentatious as an Audi/Mercedes/BMW. For someone who truly cares what others think of their car, but not themselves

Jag xf 250ps AWD is £2k more , I know which I would rather have. It's definitely priced at premium estate money, and sure deals available on all.

You're right, I'd have the VW too laugh

I don't mind the XF but, for the buyer looking for a mile-munching estate car, I'm not sure it would be the best choice. Jag are not known for producing class-leading infotainment etc, while VW stuff is generally very good, and all the buttons and controls are always just so. The Passat can carry more and even tow more. From a practical perspective, it has many advantages.

I don't doubt that the Jag would be a more engaging drive and maybe feel a bit more special but, in this segment, that probably only matters to a minority of buyers.

Will be interesting to see what the deals looked like on both, as that would be a factor as you say.

I am just about to buy a 2.0 TDI Passat GT Estate. Yes dreary, but for trudging up and down motorways it’s a nice place to be
I bought this one new 2 years ago. Didn't like the DSG I'd had in my previous Passat, so went back to a 6 speed manual with this one. One word of advice: don't pay extra for the panoramic sunroof. I did. Waste of money, never use it and it leaked internally wiping out half of the car's electrics!

A friend told me recently that VW no longer makes the Passat since the Arteon came along. Not just that they didn't sell them in the UK, but that production had stopped. My initial reaction was 'I don't think that's true' but I was thinking back to the last time I had seen one. Google soon confirmed he was wrong, but it made me think. Passats used to be everywhere, and whilst they were never the cheap option, they sold well enough. I even owned a B6 a few years back. Maybe it's just my perception that sales have fallen off a cliff recently. My cousin works for VW and his family all get favourable rates (lease rates I assume). They all drive Skodas and Seats.
The market for large saloons and estates has shrunk significantly with people moving to SUVs. 20 years ago everyone bought Passats and Mondeos, now they don't. They are both pretty big cars now though!

Anyway, I quite like it but I don't know why they didn't make it a full on 'R' model.

‘My’ courtesy car, the ‘mighty’ 1.5tsi, still came with those stupid fake exhaust mouldings in the rear bumper despite the fact it would have been better suited to a McDonald’s cardboard drinking straw as an exhaust.
They’re capacious and the build quality is top rate but it was just too ‘meh’ as a drive and was just cold and clinical.
Personally I’d prefer a lightly used A6 3.0 BiTdi estate or a BMW 5 series touring....

My, how far we've come. Imagine how capable and how (relatively) efficient this car is.

Some will think of this car almost entirely in terms of family. It could, however, do very well in service to the active singleton who's often at the beach or hiking, biking, kayaking and so on. An adventure machine. Long-distance road trip a treat.

The colour and wheels displayed are ideal, imo. Let's de-badge it!

It’s a Passat; it’s totally inoffensive even in this slightly try-hard spec. No one will notice it and I doubt it’ll ps off any owners.
