As a long time Mustang fan (I have a '68 Highland Green 390 GT on the mantlepiece), I'm not at all upset by this. The future of automobiles is electric, and every model name of car will eventually be applied to an EV. 911 included. So Ford have decided to use their most iconic model name on their first proper electric car. So what? The Mustang was launched in 1964 as a working man's (or woman's) car (it was called a secretary's car by Carroll Shelby). The GT version will have similar performance to the V8. There will be a coupe/fastback version along at some point. There will even be a Shelby Mustang EV - that will really upset a few people.

I don't even think this is a bad looking SUV. In fact I'd quite happily trade the XC60 in for one of these.

Now I'm going to have to put some strychnine in my Horlicks and slip away in the night.

Absolutely expected PH to react to the choice of name, but the tiny proportion of the SUV market that PH represents really doesn't matter a toss to Ford. Oodles of people will see that as being vaguely exciting and probably quite like the looks of it (and will love the massive iPad thing). Cheaper than Tesla by a good way too. I think it'll sell.

The mustang brand was tarnished with some real turds from the 70s through to the 05 Mustang. That’s 30 years of turds. But ultimately the brand was stronger than the cars and so can encompass an electric-SUV extension.

My son - 17 and just about to take his driving test - only cares about electric cars, which are deeply cool and interesting to him in the same way the ICE cats are deeply uncool and old. He’s applying for mechanical engineering at Uni, this is the future folks.

He’s even making me question my adherence to ICE, and until 6 months ago I owned three V8s.

I don't have the slightest issue with the concept of an electric Mustang.

A school run mummy-wagon Mustang is a bit more problematic.

I'm really torn between whether this naming or Porsche having a "Turbo" spec level of their new electric car is worse - I think for me it's the Porsche.

Also, people saying it shares platform with the i-Pace it most definitely doesn't.

Oh boy, what reaction did you expect posting this kind of article on pistonheads biggrin

I can't quite understand why they used the Mustang name, but I like the car. It's the future whether you like it or not...

To use a quote from The Predator: “You’re one ugly motherf.....er”
Not only those dummies made mustang into a soccermommy suv, but made it electric.
This thing should be called Ford Snowflake.
What a bloody disgrace!

Before you totally soil your best trousers, the Mustang - with a V8, no less - is still available for purchase.

Wow - top whining ... I love it when someone uses the word Snowflake whilst absolutely behaving like one themselves.

They haven't taken away "your" Mustang just made a different one ... doesn't appeal to me either but not many modern cars do.

The only people that really care or believe this dilutes the big RWD V8 Mustang are people on PH and guys who like to debate which type of light bulb means their 1969 classic Mustang is truly authentic.
+1

This vehicle is going for the mass market -- where consumers have a lot of questions, and some general anxiety, about BEVs. Ford are doing everything they can to make it easier for you to buy and own a BEV.

This justifies use of the Mustang name and design cues.

In its domestic market, Mustang stands for sporty in general -- and has done so for more than half a century. Hundreds of thousands of 6- and 4-cylinder Mustangs have been sold simply on the body style and on that Mustang cache.

Ford are now attempting to do with this Mustang SUV what the Model T did for ICE-powered cars. Consequently, to leverage the Mustang moniker is a shrewd business decision. It is the right decision for the US and China -- markets that will buy loads more units than the UK or EU.

Look again: this new BEV has almost no Ford branding. It's all Mustang. And not just the name, but a bold new use of the galloping horse symbol.

Mustang is in product terms more valuable than the Ford name, itself. Ford know this. That's why they've decided to develop products around sub-brand families. One is Mustang, the other Bronco.

Another bland looking SUV style car. Might just as well have been a NissanX5cayenne

This, there have been some seriously rubbish Mustangs before and there will no doubt be others after this.

Is this the future? I don't think so unless someone comes up with a quantum change in battery technology soon. First, not everyone can charge this at home, me, for example. Second, the range, even if its truthful, and in all weather conditions, is still useless. Third, it cannot possibly be the way forward to cart around a load of intensely heavy batteries. The car must weigh something extraordinary. Apart from the waste of energy (which has to be generated somehow) involved in carrying around something probably twice as heavy as it needs to be, it massively increases the kinetic energy and momentum associated with any accident, and this must by a problem from a safety perspective.

Let's see what the hydrogen fuel cell is capable of. In the meantime the latte quaffing twitterati early adopters can buy this massive step in the wrong direction, and they are welcome to it.

Of course it bastardises the brand, it's laughable to pretend otherwise, but it's Ford's brand to bastardise. Seems quite an odd decision, not to use it on an electric car but to use it on an SUV, but if they've decided that the Mustang line of products has no future, they may as well cash in on it while it's still worth something.

So far, being as heavy as a battery electric car while also being pretty slow.

Agree that's worse.

Using the Mustang name doesn't really both me, but then again I have no particularly strong affection for the brand. Agree with the others that it'll be deemed cool / interesting by people not really bothered about cars because of the name.

People on here have been surprised / complained about Ford's lack of hybrid and EV options yet get upset as soon as they do.

If you forget the Mustang name for a moment, the car itself is just another ugly looking SUV.
I suspect that no one will get that excited over it or even care.
I do though expect a lot of them will be crashed as drivers scroll through that horrific I-pad.
