Not technically getting out of a vehicle, but I did have a polite chat to a truck driver last night who nearly crushed me on my bicycle.

He decided to overtake me at a junction that has two lanes. One for straight on and one right turn only. As he passed me in the right turn lane (we were both going straight on) he panicked as the lane ran out and he began heading towards traffic waiting in the opposite lane.

He pulled back across my lane just as I was level with the dolly trailer thing on the back of his truck. I had to go left right up to the kerb and brake.

We both carried on up the road and he turned left and stopped at a carpet shop near my place of work. I locked up my bike and went over to ask him politely if he could give cyclists more room next time.

He actually apologised and admitted my speed had caught him out (oh dear hehe). I told him what had happened and asked him if he could be a bit more careful next time.

We had a polite chat and parted ways. I was expecting a load of abuse to be honest. hehe

I guess it shows how things can be talked over and sorted out if you remain calm and polite.

Unfortunately that requires both people to be rational!

Nine times out of ten neither party wants a fight. Once two blokes confront each other and realise if they're not careful they'll end up late for supper with a ripped jacket, covered in blood and minus a couple of teeth they calm down very quickly as long as one of them is adult enough to take the lead.

The problem is, there will always be those who have no real control over whether they get out, they just do. Just as that guy probably had no real control over running that poor chap over. If he had stopped to think about the possible repercussions, he wouldn't have done it and that works both ways.

I got out of my car recently when someone was being very angry with me.

I was on a DC that had roadworks reducing it to one lane, roughly 1/2 mile from where this happened. L1 was solid near stationary traffic, L2 was virtually empty. Now being a rational person who understands the meaning of merge in turn I stay in L2 and drove at around 20mph alongside the queue. A chap in some sort of SUV stuck his car half way over the white lines to slow me down. Eventually he gave up but as I pulled forwards a well dressed man in a 1 series swerved so he was at almost 90 degrees over L2.

He then started to tell me he had me on dashcam and I was being reported, and the chap in the SUV was using his phone to film me. I got out of my car and asked Mr 1 series what the issue was and what I was being reported for. Apparently it was for being an ignorant and pushing in. I asked him if he was reporting himself for dangerous driving.

It was funny how two guys were very aggressive towards me while in their cars. Including trying to block the road risking being rammed or forcing a totally avoidable accident. But neither would carry their aggression outside of the vehicle when faced by someone who could manage to form sentences and not lose it by swearing or being abusive.

My part in that incident was to not allow these self appointed Knights of the road to make up rules that don't exist. Next time something like that happens I'll get out again. Because it's pretty much guaranteed that the kind of man (and it is 99% of the time) who is so aggressive from the perceived safety of his metal box can't deal with grown up face to face challenges. Proper villains don't need to shout threats about dashcams or create potential flashpoints from nothing.

Years ago had a scouse black cab driver take umbrage with me when I was unable to let him do a U turn at a set of traffic lights without Scotty beaming me up and out of his life.

He jumped out of his cab threatening blue murder and was obviously wanting to 'come and see me'. He was so wound up, had his left hand wrapped around his B pillar as he slammed his drivers door shut. This badly trapped his fingers between door and pillar, therefore trapping him. Painfully, looking at his face.

As the lights changed to green, I gave him a cheery wave and departed, chuckling as I saw him trying to open the door/extract his fingers with nobody around him. Picture!

are true accounts from experience.

Sadly, PH seems besieged with individuals who seem to feel they are brain surgeons who's opinion on the subject trumps all others, because they once read an article about it in a newspaper.

I was 18 and thought I was untouchable in my rapid 1400cc Citroen Saxo. I also thought I was a bit of a lad, so I angled my rear washer jet to point at the drivers' windscreen behind me. I almost felt a like a cheap version of James Bond, he has oil slicks, I have a rear washer jet to squirt any scally tailing me.

For a few weeks, I went around squirting other drivers if they got too close to my rear bumper. I thought it was hilarious, as did anyone in my car at the time. Until one day I did it to the wrong person. Said person was in a very tatty Ford Escort van who was right up my backside on an A road. So I employed my rear washer jet 'to teach him a lesson'. The guy went fking mental. He tried numerous times to ram me off the road, he tried to side swipe my car whilst driving, I could see him shaking with rage behind the wheel, he was fking nuts!!

Well, the guy followed me for miles and I just couldn't shake him. He must have been chasing me for a good 20 minutes before I decided to zoom down a dirt track as fast as possible, park up (with the handbrake obviously) and leg it.

Somehow I managed to lose the guy, I like to think he is still out there looking for me.

Living up to your namesake biggrin

Out of curiosity. Did you manage to keep that car damage free for a few years?

laugh This is true. I was a benis back then for sure

Unfortunately due to not being the most sympathetic driver, I killed the car. It went to the scrap yard in the sky. I frigging loved that car, I just wish 18 year old me was more responsible.

whilst being conscious of the flak I got re: my last response on cycling and bell end drivers...................

the last few posts remind me of a tale:

whilst cycling home- a stationary, parked car, I overtook, suddenly lurched forward and set off. I shout "whoaaa" to alert him ! That's it- just a shout out as clearly he hasn't checked his mirrors.

he clearly hears me (open window)- shouts some council esque abuse from within his chav'd up fiesta and then starts chasing me down !!!!

the thing is, I was 100 yards off going onto a tarmac track which then cuts up the side of a Victorian tramway- he can't follow me for far.

but yep, this bell end actually drives his car onto a narrow pavement and chases me down. its not looking good !!! I know I've only got say 400 yards and I'm through some bollards and safe.

Of course he forgets that 200 yards into it, there is a massive cast iron manhole cover sticking up.

Joy of joy he hits that full tilt and as far as I can tell, smashes the entire bumper, underside and sump from his car.

I wave him a cheery goodbye as council chav realises what has just happened. but honestly: WTF !!!!

Holy crap. What a douche bag. I've never understood the mentality of someone to react like this after making a mistake. A simple "I'm really sorry mate, I just didn't see you" would have saved the chav so much stress and his car

I was following a an 5 series with its lights off near home years ago when I lived in Worthing, flashed him a few times - then beeped the horn.

Slammed his brakes on, flew out of the car at me and screamed "what is your problem, do you want filling in?!"... I got out of my, (PH, this matters) Mk1 Mx5 and told him his lights were off.

His response, word for word:

"Oh goodness, how silly! Thank you!" Before scuttling back to his shed...

hehe

As above though.... people are nutters, all of them.
This did not happen.

Quite possibly did! I had a woman in front last week, driving with lights off for over 10 mins, with me flashing her from behind. She kept on giving me the finger and shaking fist!!!! I did find this quite funny so carried on with regular flashes, about 3-4 miles later she turns her lights on!

As the road splits I'm turning right so by sheer chance pull along side her car. I look over and shes just sitting there staring ahead as if nothing has happened!!!!!!

Never got out of my car, but had one person do it to me.

One was a truly innocent time I was with a work colleague who was driving, a guy in a Beddy Rascal was behind us, a builder, I canl't remember the exact details, but it was a lane merge due to roadworks, we were going a different way so as we went past I gave him a cheery wave.

Bad mistake, he chased after us for about a mile, driver was cacking it. We came to some temp lights.

He parked up behind us and got out, I told her to wind the windows up and lock the doors. Came up to my window and was literally shaking with rage, long haired dope smoking builder eejit. I wound the window down about an inch and he nearly broke his hand trying to get it into the car. Told driver to get her phone and I calmy turned round to get his plate, he saw what i was doing, got even madder and started punching the door as I told him we were going to do him for vehicle damage.

Then a roadworker came round the corner and just told him to stop being a gormless cretin and get back into his shoebox.

He did, luckily did not ram us as he went through the reds on his way.

I feared for his safety, not mine, he was so crazed he would likely have died of shock
