That’s the attraction. A massive departure + lots of breakdowns + Tim out of his comfort zone = plenty views.
In that case forget eBay - he should go to a properly dodgy car graveyard trade auction (like Cannock for example - not BCA/Mannheim/anywhere reputable like that) where only the best* part exchanges go through the ring.

hehe
You’re right. I was being overly generous. Make that £500 +£50/£50 evil

Some cars more than a couple of years old? Something lightweight (Elise, Caterham, even the Morgan 3-wheeler that was briefly in the fleet).

An old school classic of some sort.

No need to duplicate up the AMG and FF as usable exotics.
Fair enough, not sure something older works for the channel though - I got the sense the old Mini he had was a source of frustration and presume it didn't bring in the views otherwise it would have stayed.
Tim in a £1000 bargain basement, be it a Mini or whatever. Straight from an eBay auction. Driven London to Monaco. A max £100 to get it roadworthy, max £100 worth of spares in the boot +tool box. Would work for the channel.
It wouldn't. It isn't what he does, it's what some other people do.

As much as many of us on PH would relish that sort of content, I think Tim has suggested before that the "road trip" type of content (the Mille Miglia and GumBall for example) didn't work as well for him - he seems to get better engagement (and therefore revenue) from the "show and tell" type of content.

From his recent Instagram posts, I think he is off skiing at the moment, which explains the last few days being filler content recorded over the last few months.

I agree with this 100% (Harry’s my favourite) but I’ve also just starting watching Ratarossa’s channel.
Seems a genuine guy that looks after his older model Ferrari’s.
I used to work with Scott years ago, and he still lives locally. He has had his Ferrari 360 for years, and you could always hear him giving it beans out of the works car park at the end of day.

Really good to see him progressing with this channel, and restoring the older Ferrari's.

That would get about 6 views. But would take a good week, more to film. In which time he could’ve filmed 10 videos which would get 250,000 views. So as much as I’d love to see it too, realistically why would he bother?

As above, it's their job in many cases, so they kind of do.

But even those who don't "have" to will chase algorithm metrics and numbers much of the time, making content they think will perform well.

Harry quite clearly makes the videos he wants to, the way he wants to, and that's how things "should" be. It's really good that people agree with his taste in cars and video style and as such it's going well for him, though.

Likewise I think most of us respected Danny's decision to back off doing videos and get on with what he enjoyed doing instead more.
As a pretty casual YT viewer I often find you can tell which camp they are in

A) Passionate about the subject and it's morphed into their full time job even if that wasn't the intention

B) People who have made it their full time job to try and jump on the bandwagon/avoid an actual job

I watch a lot more of the A's (this isn't solely car related channels)

First 2 episodes of behind the glass season 3 have been good

Can’t stand see through glass and the videos, really like the podcasts though.

Given how many subscribers Harry’s Garage has, he is doing rather well on views.. I just like his authenticity and totally unbiased opinions..

Another big thumbs up for Harry’s Garage. His love of cars comes across well and he never seems to go over the top with praise or criticism.

Enjoyed the Porsche video and was surprised about a few things like the cabin noise which I don’t recall being picked up in other reviews.

6 views? Based on previous vlogs, you’ve miscalculated: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C2Fc5KRhbWc

Why would it take a week or more to film?

What you don’t want is an uneventful journey in a £500 VW diesel, with Shmee getting increasingly smug faced as he nears Monaco.

What you do want is: ‘Breaking down TWELVE TIMES on-route to Monaco in my £500 BMW 750’, and a thumb of Shmee fighting a huge engine fire with an extinguisher, on-route. That could take a week, but you’d get a weeks worth of views from one vlog.

I liked the video but it really put me off the car - not much engagement, not much charm, too fast and very unrefined. I was thinking how much I would prefer a Vantage before he said it.

911's I drove in 2019 included 1989 Club Sport, 991.2 Gt3 Touring and 911R. Now for that sort of engagement you are happy to accept the lack of refinement!

I would prefer a manual 4.0 Cayman GTS - and get a bit of change.

If you are investing time and no doubt money too then you have to upload what brings the money in. See what was said just above about the Shmee in a mini dream vid.

It would take more than a week. Sourcing the car, looking at possibilities, buying, getting it slightly roadworthy, driving down stopping and filming/fixing etc.

He’s got a tried and tested formula that gets views, he’s tried other things and they just didn’t work. I absolutely guarantee that the videos you described would do very badly on his channel. You seem to forget, us lot here on PH are typical of probably 1% of his viewership.

Never going to happen with schmee.

He's never going to do a hubnut ie :

Change engine a day before leaving before driving thru Europe to Croatia with no breakdown cover.

You can see why mile miglia / gumball doesn't get any views - it's been done to death.

Perhaps the stats say this sucks too - but i much prefer the 'get mates and go on a road trip' content, as that's what i'd do more of if i could.

Sadly all of this is now driven by views, and views don't always follow ph/petrolhead folk's interests (hence we all love the channels that are passion projects rather than businesses... HG etc). I couldn't watch another 'garage' or 'dealership' tour if you paid me, i'm always surprised that people are still interested in watching that kind of stuff - it's just.. mindless. Thankfully i scrubbed a load of 'tubers from my list a while back, but a quick scan of them and the latest video titles are almost a parody of themselves.

And we all know which ones are the 'Olly Higuys' of the bunch... the worst incarnation of what YT car content has to offer. Mindless is the word and most of them are millennials with a family history of blindly supporting their endeavours. Cream at the top is usually small in quantity and high in quality. Vote with your views and they'll get the message.
