I always get so excited when any Cosworth-related threads pop up, purely because I enjoy reading people's stories about them.

Like most I'm a big fan of the 3 door, but would not scoff at a Sapphire - especially now that 3 doors are currently way, way out of my grasp.

Never had one and used to tease my dad about these back in the day. He was always quick to criticise them, mainly because I think he was bitter over them being faster (and probably often beating) him in his Merc 190 Cossie.

Remember seeing a white Sapphire local to me as a kid. A bloke with long frizzy hair used to hoon it up the A507 near my village (Arlesey). Distinctly remember the loud waste gate he'd fitted, and the car dragging it's arse down the road as he gave it the beans cool

I really, really want one.

Something like this would do me grand, in reality I’ve no idea what it would be like as I think I last drive a road Cosworth in or around the year 2000 but I’d like to see it when I opened the garage door!

Snap.

Love hearing to stories and seeing pictures of the Sierra Cosworths. To be honest, any fast ford even when I have never owned one.

Just something about them. Mostly growing up watching these cars in competition. The Ford Sierra RS Cosworth 3dr just looks fantastic. I have never been a fan of the Sapphire but they say it was much easier to live with on a daily basis.

Another itch was the Escort RS Turbo MK1 but again I never went ahead and bought one.

The think about many of these cars is the fact the are homologation cars which in my mind will only attract just because of this reason.

I really do miss the fact manufacturers don't need to do this now.

I always loved that colour and I used to be chuffed whenever I saw one in that colour at Ford Fair/RS National Days. cool
Very early colour, only available on E plates iirc.
Mercury Grey was another early colour.

You can get Crystal and Mercury on F plates too

A good 3dr was £12-14k in 1990. I paid between £400-600 insurance from 1990-2003.
In 1993, I could have bought a high mileage (105k) but pristine, full historied one owner 3 dr for the £2,500 the Ford dealer I worked for had given in PX against a new Escort Cosworth.

Being 18 years old, I couldn't even find an insurer willing to quote on it. One of the valeting guys bought it in the end. He was in his early 30s, and was paying £2,600 a year, with a whole list of constraints and caveats attached to the cover. This was Oxford at the height of the joyriding epidemic.

Had I known then what I know now, I would have bought it and stored it. Despite the mileage, it was a beautiful, completely original, unmolested example. Never been crashed or stolen, never had paint, and had been serviced absolutely religiously on a no expense spared basis.

Or you could have put £2,500 down on a buy to let, rented it out to pay the mortgage for 25 years and been way ahead of what that leggy Cosworth would have earned you.

The other thing I would have done differently back then, with the benefit of hindsight. Most of my money went up the wall in those days. I can't quite bring myself to say 'sadly' though. smile

The Cosworth was just a lovely thing.

They are internally gated and external waste gates were a rare thing on a road car back then. A simple cone filter (Grp A K&N), and removal of the standard recirculating valve unleashed the lovely sounds of the compressor surge though. That's usually what people mistake for waste gate flutter.

Apologies for being that smart arse.

I did think about F plates as I posted but wasn't sure. Was it an available colour on a F or late registered?

Mercury Grey is a lovely colour too.

I once had a Schwartz Black (Gloss) in 2wd too. One (or so I was told at the time) of 52 cars in 2wd. I've since seen reports of around 200 so I'm not sure. Sadly stolen, never to be seen again.

Love Sapphires ever since i was a kid! I had a poster of one on my bedroom wall whilst all my mates had supercars, F40, Lambos smile

Finally bit the bullet in 2008 and purchased mine for £4000 in the colour i've always wanted, (magenta) with the interior spec i wanted too.

Done a fair few mods to her, Bigger turbo, Bigger intercooler, injectors, suspension etc All stuff for the better what with how old it is. Never gone crazy power wise, never had it rolling roaded for a figure, perhaps i should really! Granted there a much faster cars and a better drive out there now but I'm happy with that if i'm honest, Still makes me giggle like a child when it comes on boost shoving me down the road laugh

Parts are becoming a pain to get hold of, nothing is available from Ford at all, its all second hand items with masses of "RS" tax or few and far between remanufaced items, whereas my mate with his old Merc can still get pretty much everthing from main dealer!

The missus isn't the biggest fan either, "its old and feels like a fair ground ride" laughlaughlaugh

Probably a bit sad having the car you always wanted as a H reg four door Sierra! but i still wouldn't sell it for the world! cool

I had a lot fun in the 90's in mine but I got bored with it in the end, and it just sat in the garage for the last 2 or 3 years. Despite being from the same era, the 944 I have now is a better car.

I absolutely loved the performance delivery in mine, the class case of lag.... nothing.... and suddenly crash bang wallop everything all at once!
My first passenger ride sold me, full boost in 2nd was just never possible to tire of. I hate the modern stuff that’s far too linear and smooth, it’s just boring.
My old 280bhp Cav Turbo was very similar, bucket loads of fun. I’d kill to own another Cosworth or Cav Turbo again.

There are actually only a few Fords that do it for me, but Cossies are definitely up there. A Sapphire Cossie in Magenta Red would be just the trick.

A friend on Facebook has one - looks great on Compomotive THs - but the latest pics of it have been documenting the work he's doing on it. What looked a decent enough car is now having new sills etc. Tickled me to see it up in the air, half the interior out, but still with a Disklok on it.

Great piece PH.

I still own the Disklok from when I had mine, I think they’re a standard extra for Cosworth owners!

I've had a few 2wd Saphs, and still own a 3dr, and love them. It's not for everyone but I like the rawness of them, great fun. Not the best handling of cars but a drivers car. It's a shame that you need such deep pockets to get into one now.
CAR magazine were pretty impressed with the times they did. Considering the small tyres and power output they could keep quite a few sports cars honest.....plus double as a normal 4-dr 5-seater car the rest of the time

20k used to buy you all 4 of those a decade or so ago

Now you’d probably need an extra 5k to get just the Vauxhall and Ford

I love them but there will be many on PH that will have an argument contrary to what my opinion is. Just the way it is on here so I tend to tone my views down.

That said they are tail happy in rwd form with no nanny aids to help over-enthusiastic folks out. The reason why many found an early end. One downside is a terrible steering lock.

I remember 2003-4, loads were being broken parts were dirt cheap. New parts as well, from specialists, I think I payed a tenner for a headgasket and 8 quid for a set of head bolts.

I've come very close to buying a Cavalier Turbo(twice) and I went to see both of them...but I bottled it both times sadly. The 4wd system and tyre problems scared me off.
