As well as being fun to drive, for me a hot hatch must be affordable to everyone, which includes being practical enough to be the only car in the family.
Out of them all I think the two below did it best. Almost everyone, who likes cars, has had one of them.
EP3
Mk5 GTI
I haven't had either of these. Though did vaguely consider a EP3 1.4 MAX for the wife recently for the princely sum of £795.Out of them all I think the two below did it best. Almost everyone, who likes cars, has had one of them.

I'm going to nominate the two I've owned and the one I've driven & really want:
The 2 I owned:
Ford Fiesta Mk7 ST - with Mountune MP215 kit - it keeps the warranty & they were supplied like that from the dealers, so I'm going to say it's production. I think there were some runout models that had it as standard.
Ford Focus Mk2.5 ST - bought it to replace the Fiesta as I needed a family wagon, it's got 5 doors a big boot and more importantly, 5 cylinders, seemingly limitless grunt and clings on to the road no matter what.
The one I've driven & want -
Focus Mk2.5 RS. Like mine, but just more. All round just more. Drove it on a "supercar" day and it was the most fun thing there, that's up against a Caterham, Ferrari 430 and Porsche 997. Car had been modded to about 380-400hp, so felt like walking a genetically modified pit bull, constantly straining on the leash.

Ford Fiesta ST Mk7: The ubiquitous hot hatch of the last decade. Quick enough, good-looking enough, fun enough and cheap enough. Has there ever been such a proliferation spanning age and class since the original Golf GTI?
Ford Focus RS Mk2: The hard-of-thinking man's choice. The most blue collar sex appeal since the RS500. Looks and sounds exactly like a turbonutterb*stard should.
Honda Civic Type-R FK8: Everything right about a hot hatch in one place.

Considering I haven't driven many cars I'm mainly going off reviews and what owners say about them.
1. Renault Clio 182 Cup - For being probably one of the most fun hot hatches built that isn't a full on track day car like an R26.R.
2. Honda Civic EP3 Type - R - Great chassis, fun to drive plus an engine that revs to 8k rpm, also pratical and very reliable as it's Japanese.
3. VW Golf MKV GTI - My pick of the bunch mainly because I own one, best all rounder whilst still being fun to drive.
