Do people with high levels of estrogen somehow naturally disapprove of Cannonball Run attempts?

Serious bunch of fannies in here today. No one died. They took serious precautions and achieved something that I think is frankly ridiculous. Loads of stuff is dangerous in this world. It makes life very exciting. I wonder are these the same people that want the Isle of Mann TT races ended since there is a major risk of spectator death at that too. All because the riders enjoy a thrill...

This is literally the place where speed matters (mattered?). Perhaps mumsnet would be a better forum for you.

Part of me wants to (figuratively) punch the air and shout ‘take that, all you yoghurt-weaving, muesli-treading, sandle-wearing save the earth types’
We are constrained more and more by governments bending over backwards to subdue the motorist, with the proliferation of speed and average speed cameras.
But part of me says how stupid they are, 103 average means they will have been at maxV for considerable periods (presumably), and (forgive me as I’ve not watched the video yet), the driver/occupants would surely be getting incredibly tired, even if dozing in the back (again I’m presuming that they were replaced at various points along the way but as I can’t view the video at present, please forgive me if I’m incorrect)
Always remember ex-wife’s cousin coming over from Oz where he was a traffic cop in Brisbane
Told me about a call they had a few weeks before his visit, to somewhere 100+ miles up the coast
No problem, straight road, middle of the night, no traffic and a thumping V8 patrol car
They set off, never dropping below 100mph but after a few miles they had the misfortune to hit a baby kangaroo hopping into the road
The impact pushed the engine back over 6”, car ended up crashing and both of the officers hospitalised
Just saying as that’s in a country with low traffic volume in comparison to the good ‘ole US of A
But still, take that Greta Thunberg!

In fairness, believing in "Speed Matters" doesn't necessarily mean believing in tanking a Merc across the country at high speed.

There's a time and a place for Speed. Speed only kills at an inappropriate time. One might argue that 193mph on the public road is an inappropriate time.

Don't get me wrong, this is really cool but I am a little torn. If only for the fact that the more times this record is chased, the higher the speed goes.

I wonder what the reaction would be if someone had broken the record for crossing the UK and averaged over a ton on our network?

It's an incredible achievement.
well , except it's not realy is it. I mean, how "difficult" is it to do high speeds in a modern car in a straight line? It's just not, you put your right foot on the floor and, well, that it's really. The Video shows how pointless and dull it actually is. All they are doing is trading risk vs reward, the risk in killing an innocent member of the public / gettting caught by the cops, and the reward being able to claim some completely pointless number for a completely pointless act.
Try reading the article again

The achievement isn't just the speed, but the level of prep to make it safely happen without now being in prison.

This kind of daredevil antics is what makes life exciting. Remember the times before everyone was scared of everything?

Of course no one should do this on the M25, but the cannonball run is just a bit special and these guys know what they are doing.
I’m pretty sure that back in the day there was an informal online community of people who did ‘laps’ of the M25 against the clock, and got it down to under an hour for 117 miles (or 112 if you took the tunnel instead of the bridge).

Well done to Arne and Doug, awesome achievement to knock 6% off a record that’s stood for six years, and also very gracious of Ed Bolian in losing his record.

Oh, and if anyone wants to get some work done today, don’t start watching VinWiki videos, they are a very big rabbit hole of awesome car stories.

the TT spectators go there voluntarily.
nobody was asked whether it was ok if these guys zip by at 120 mph when driving home from the groceries

It's pretty crazy, for sure but it's not as sociopathic/criminally irresponsible as someone who has never driven across parts of the south/midwest might imagine; for huge sections there is nothing but road and a few trucks in any direction for hours...just google street map some of those roads; there's more to hit doing vmax at Bruntingthorpe

I'd be interested to know how many supporters of these guys would feel the same way if they previously had a loved one killed by a reckless driver? Would you have a different point of view? Is it just exciting because no one got hurt on this occasion? And as for comparing it to the TT, that's just plain stupid.

I’d be fking amazed. I spend most of my day going up and down the M1 and I struggle to average 40 because I’m usually sat bd still for most of it

I remember reading the article in Street Machine magezine about the 1979 event, when Heinz and Yarborough won in 32 hrs 51 mins in the XJ-S. With the film Gunball Rally fresh in the mind at the time, I can remember as a 16 year old that this was the greatest thing since sliced bread biggrin
Times and attitudes have changed though in 40 years.

Many people probably also don't realise that the 2nd running of the Cannonball in 1971 was won in 35 hrs and a bit by a certain former F1 driver and winner of the LeMans 24hr race.......the legendary Dan Gurney with Brock Yates co-driving....in a Ferrari Daytona. Unexpected snow in the Rocky mountains slowed them down, but Gurney claimed at no point did they exceed 175mph laugh

This is just well financed, large scale Barry Boy activity in your local Sainsbury’s car park.

I’m sure both are impressive to their respective audiences.

But I’m not one of the fans.

From watching the video on VinWiki and this article, IINM, it doesn't actually state when they broke the record.

I'm therefore assuming it was some time ago and the statute of limitations has passed.
My understanding is it also ties into speeding being state law thing, not a federal issue.

So yes, clearly if I do something like this, even over a shorter distance, I've pulled an average of over a ton through, say, three states. All three states have a limit of 55.

Which state(s) can nab me for speeding after the event? As far as each is concerned, I could have crossed their jurisdiction at 55 and then hit the horizon as soon as I was next door. They can't prove I ripped through their area at illegal speeds, and as much as they might know damn well I did, there's not a great deal they can do.

Just a thought
Cletus, Brandine and their 5 squawking kids are travelling along Interstate 12345 in their ‘seen better days’ Arkansas Chuggabug car at 55mph
Blasting the other way us aforementioned E63, travelling at, sat, 130mph
2 vehicles separated by a few feet
All it takes is a slight in-flight correction from either vehicle and we have carnage
Alternatively, imagine the pressure wave, and the wash from the E63 thundering by a few feet away at Warp Factor 4, I’m guessing it could be enough to cause the hillbillies car to go wildly out of control
Pick the bones out of that Greta Thunberg...

Im also surprised PH have advertised this.

Shouldnt we all be talking about miles per gallon and the latest battery cars, or maybe interior design or becoming a vegan, I mean thats why we all log in every day isnt it?

How dare they, these type of stories should be left for blokes to read about on a petrol head sites!

I love this. I lived on the Gumball and Cannonball run films growing up.

This is a little piece of the past making it through to reality gives me hope. We're not all dead. Risking it all to keep the human spirit alive.

Great and all, but that's easy to say when you haven't had a friend or relaitve killed or seriously injured by a reckless driver, i.ee It's all a matter of perspective.

If that were the case, then it's pretty much certain your perspective might be less towards "fun" and more towards being responsible....
