My 991.2 was broken into over Friday night. It has a normal button activation on the key fob (NOT proximity sensor). I locked the car on Friday evening and opened it on Saturday afternoon to find the glove box and door pockets emptied onto the passenger seat and floor respectively. There were no signs of a break-in. How is it possible to access a locked car, can the key fob be "read" and mimicked remotely?

It wasn’t locked is my bet. You think you did, but didn’t. You’d be surprised how often scrotes go checking doors down streets to rifle the contents.

We had it done to our 1 series recently. Was sure I’d locked it, came out next day to find all the contents on the seat and spare change gone - all of a couple of quid!

Whilst it's a bummer someone nicking stuff out your car at least you didn't have a broken window or worse to contend with! Surely when you lock the wing mirrors fold in ?

If it's like my 981, then the mirrors only unfold when the key is turned in the ignition. So if you go back to the car after locking it i.e. you forgot something, then as you unlock the mirrors stay folded. Folded mirrors aren't a sign that the car is locked.

On my 991.2 coupe the doors lock automatically after 30 seconds if no one in the vehicle and the doors and bonnet are shut and the keys are not in the vehicle. So it is difficult to imagine that the OPs car was left unlocked.

They automatically RELOCK; if the vehicle has been unlocked inadvertently and then not disturbed - they must first be locked; then unlocked.......

They do not automatically lock when left.......

Weird most cars I have had with folding mirrors unfold when you open the car and fold when you lock , I am sure my 987 Cayman did the same

Arent folding mirrors an option? Not everyone has them?
I would say it wasnt locked as well? If someone took the time to clone your key i think a bit more than change would have gone missing?
You'd be surprised how many car doors and house doors are tried in the night?

I bought a 991.2 in April. For five days it sat on the drive with the mirrors folded and me content that it was locked. Then one night I tried the door handle and the car was unlocked, mirrors folded. Now I check.

I often arrive home after a trip out, lock the car, go into the house then realise I've left something in the frunk,

In the early days of ownership I would go out to retrieve whatever I'd forgot by pressing the button on the key fob, remove item, close it up and go back inside not realising pressing the release button also unlocked the doors.

I did this a few times before I realised what was happening and dare say my car spent a fair amount of time in different locations unlocked.

I now make sure I press the lock button and check the doors before I walk away.

Also my mirrors fold when locking the car but won't unfold till the key is in the ignition and turned on.

Even our Ford Fiesta wing mirrors fold on locking and unfold on unlocking the car I think it's pretty poor Porsches don't do the same! It also automatically locks but wing mirrors remain unfolded if you don't use the key.

My mirrors unfold when I unlock the car i.e. before I get anywhere near the inside. Perhaps it is programmable?

I had something similar which has never really been explained. See my original forum post here:-

My guess is one of the doors was not fully shut. You may have pressed the key fob as you walked away but it will have done nothing due to the insecure door.

Having now played with the car I can confirm a) if the car is locked and then unlocked, it will self lock in around a minute and b) that it does not self-lock after leaving the car (I guess that prevent getting locked out with your keys within). It a GTS with fixed mirrors.

Conclusion I'm an idiot and must have either hit the wrong button of not hit any buttons!!

My 981 key is prone to the equivalent of a pocket dial for a mobile phone - might that have been what happened?
