We're off to New England next year and I quite fancy digging the DSLR back out of the cupboard (7D)

What would be a good lens to arm myself with? Only want to carry one with me. 24-70 2.8 L?

Where is good to find used lenses? I tried Talk Photography but apparently I am not worthy of buying anything from their membership.

7d I would go for either 18-135 stm or 17-55/2.8

Agree with Rob, try MPB, Ffordes, Wex for good condition used lenses (other retailers are avaiable, eg Park,Camera Jungle, Cameraworld, etc) but initially I'd be looking at the first three.

What about 24-105mm f/4L?

Depends, personally I find 24mm on a crop not wide enough.

You will regret it! Take two. Not much extra bother in the scheme of things.

Don’t think my 15-85 was ever off my 80D on my New England trip.

But then it’s rarely off it full stop. Seems to do everything other than wildlife.

Am I just being unnecessarily needy about wanting something that will go a bit bigger apature than the 15-85? Or fancying some L glass again? (I sold my 70-200L years ago).

Nikon man here, but for Hols I find my 16-85 pretty much perfect, its "only" f3.5 though.....

Thats a great lens.

IMo the 15-85 is as good optically but slower, range vs constant aperture both are good.

Interested to know what you’d be taking pictures of in New England that would need less than 3.5? I think I’d find the 17-55 lacking in reach as an all rounder lens, which is why I’ve never gone for it.

Agree with what Rob says - 24mm isn’t wide enough on a crop. There isn’t really a wide L that works for me - as much as I want one!

They dont make L lenses for EF-S, and because of the crop factor a standard single lens walk about with useful zoom range is different on both sensor sizes.

16-35/17-40 would do if you can cope with the shorter end range but neither are better options on crop (heavier and more expensive etc).

Canon full frame - 35-350 USM 'L' - awesome piece of kit
Canon APSC - 17-40 'L' + 35-350 usm 'L'
If it were up to me I'd buy both bodies and both the above lenses - sorted

I’d stick with exactly that combo. The 24-70 L is incredibly versatile and sharp. Every time I’ve gone for my 17-40 L I’ve ended up staring at the image and thinking it’s just a bit soft.

And if 24 isn’t wide enough, just take a few steps backwards. wink
