Yes a few of us had considered them at the time and I, for one, always regretted not buying one.
It was still a tad difficult getting in and out of.
The Alpine is very easy to get in and out (at 6’3). A Lotus Elise, Exige and I assume Europa, are not. Makes a huge difference for a daily driver.

Well Porsche is listening (partly), new 718 GTS is a 6 cilinder 4.0 NA Manual (only?!) 400PS. Priced accordingly probably so no direct competition.

And in the process they’ve addressed the anomaly that the 4 pot GTS had been quicker than the GT4 by making the GTS slower than the GT4 ( which is to be expected )and I can see the owners very happy with an option for a 6 pot again

That's very much a relative term. All "modern" era Lotus offer an intense experience, not often described as refined.

I was contemplating earlier today the short-lived Lotus Europa S. In many ways very similar to the 110 concept, albeit with a manual transmission. Fewer than 500 were ever built/sold,
  • 4-pot turbo
  • Aluminium chassis
  • More refined than an Elise
  • A bit pricey
A link here for those interested, and for those who may never have heard of it, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lotus_Europa_S
I wrote about it earlier in the tread with the same point. There are numbers of reasons why they didnt sell new, but after they went out of production they have been quite sought after and prices have never really dropped low. I looked into importing one during the times when it was cheaper for us to buy cars in the uk (and lower prices in general). I wanted the raw elise feeling, but with a bit more comfort for road use, like a more complete interior, they also have AC etc and can get seriously quick with some upgrades. As close to the Alpine as they have been i guess smile

In other news: Porsche just announced a 400 bhp naturally aspirated 4.0 six cylinder manual only mainstream Cayman.... surely the antithesis of the light, auto only turbo only four cylinder only Renault Alpine? smile

Yes and it is slower and heavier than the model it replaces...
Glad people have the choice but I wouldn’t swap an Alpine for one.

I think that may be down to revised regs re weight, I seem to recall a similar issue with the new GT4 in that it’s not much different despite the numbers.

The most disappointing aspects of the new Cayman GTS are its weight and its shockingly poor level of efficiency with a WLTP of 246g/km.

Seems a massive backwards step to recover lost sales at any price.

How much does that cost?

62k
But if you want the gts pack ( contrast stitching in headrests/ illuminated vanity mirrors/ gts logo on Speedo / coloured seatbelts/ and a few other options then you can get it to around £82k easily ( as a friend has done) including PCCB and sports seats.

It’s a massive displacement nasp, what did you expect ? Either way a surprising move by Porsche. Where is Greta?

So it sounds better but performance is equal or lesser. I suppose that’s not a massive trade-off but the last thing the Caysters needed was more weight .
Weight of the GT4 means even an R version would be over 1400kg perhaps?? Would they make a lighter version than the gt4? Can’t see why as it is the halo model.
Some might say it’s an acknowledgement that they brought the wrong dog to the fight. Not sure it will affect the Alpine sales as it’s still a lightweight.
Other observation is that it will be cheaper to get out of an alpine into a gts than from a 718 to gts as a result of the “depreciation” certain Porsche boys always cried in any alpine thread. Not for me but if a six pot is vital to buyers then BMW/Toyota have now lost their USP.

Seems like a massive forward step to recover lost sales to me. I don't think the emissions level will be a massive concern for the target audience.

i think it is a smart move using a platofrm they already have. I can see it taking BMW/Toyota sales rather than Alpine sales

Perhaps not such a big deal in the UK, but in some countries the levy for high emissions is crippling. In France, for example, I expect the "malus" will be well over £10000 maybe double that it's already 10000Euro for a base 718!

More choice is never a bad thing. Its good to see a large engined sports car being offered.

Sounds like a desirable car to me.

The Alpine A110 and A110S Performance vs Fuel Economy is pretty impressive, I think it’s superior to its competitors.

(Power (248 - 287 BHP)
(0 - 60, 4 5 - 4.4 secs)
(Fuel Economy 43 - 46 mpg)
