Its an unusual car, French answer to the 330i coupe that in some ways actually drives better.

They drive very well, the looks are a bit odd, some angles they look nice other angles it just looks all wrong, but if you'd driven one you'd appreciate they drive very well mainly due to the excellent Peugeot suspension.

The top models had fancy electric controlled shocks, I've only had one of these it had the petrol 3.0 v6 with the fancy suspension and it had very impressive body control, high speed on undulating roads / curves with odd cambers these hold a perfect poise where something like a 330i or C320 coupe would be rattling and crashing over bumps making you think about slowing down - these just cover the same bumps without any effect on ride or the driver, for what is now a cheap car very impressive..

They also feel surprisingly solid and well made inside, with a great spec, not like your average crap rattling old Peugeot.

I've not tried one of the diesel ones but they are well known for killing their g/boxes at which point they are scrap.

If you buy one of these you need to find one of the used parts specialists as many of the parts from Peugeot are punishingly expensive, with a bit of research you can avoid most of that (motor factors and used off ebay) and have an interesting car for £ peanuts.

Compare it to the equivalent German coupe's with same age, spec and miles and these are approx 25% of the cost to buy used.

A 456 kit is easier to imagine. That had an equally horrid front overhang but I don't remember many folk complaining about that. Emperor's new clothes etc.

That’s some imagination

As nice as this is inside the looks mean I couldn't buy one but I would buy the Laguna Coupe:

504 Coupe looked fantastic, 406 Coupe very nice but these are hideous.

Peugeot had already given up on performance/handling when the "6's" came out but there where some hints of nice styling cues remaining, lifted with the 406 Coupe (Grazi Pinninfarina) but by the "7s" any sense of "Gallic classe" was gone. Sure, there will be many owners who have had reliable and fondly remembered cars but these, surely should be best revisited at "festival of the unremarkable meet 2027" and looked back upon with a sense of "cool" then, not yet though.

I bought a petrol version new in 2007 with a £7000 discount. Had it for three years and not a thing went wrong with it. It was a great car and is certainly one that looks better in the flesh than in pictures.
I lost £3500 in the years when I p/x'd it. Cheapest car ownership I've ever had

I bought one of these 9 months or so ago as my daily commuter. I used to hate the look of them but they have grown on me over the years. I think they have aged very well since mine is 15 years old.

I have covered 8k in it so far and the V6 diesel is a cracking engine, lots of grunt, decent motorway economy of over 45mpg and very very comfortable too.

I can’t recommend it enough especially in black with GT Oxblood leather and rare 19” factory wheels.

A bit of a gem I reckon.

Another owner of the later 3.0 diesel here, having had a 2.7 diesel. No one would ever confuse it with a well-handling German equivalent, but as a lux-o-barge it is very pleasant, particularly for the cost (£5k at 6 years and 60k on the clock - VED is normal on the 3.0 and motorway consumption in the 40s). My first one had the hydraulic valve issue common to the gearbox of the time, but other than that neither car has had any significant issues. Spec is very good on these (the older one came with a stitched dash, but they dropped some spec for the later models due to needing to discount to sell) and they are very quiet on the motorway due to the double-glazed windows. I’ve driven nothing for the money that comes close as a cruiser, the only car I fancy to replace it is a 640D GC, but that was double the money when new.

Looks are very marmite - each to their own!

Have to agree. After the Pininfarina effort especially, this thing looked awful and deserving of its now, 'shed' status.

V6 or not, these will never be considered as desirable classics.

I have studied design for over 10 years, and all I have to say is that car is one of the worst pieces of design I have ever seen.

i was about to mention that...looks like a good 2 to 3ft of front overhang - a real gaper. nowhere near as nice looking as the 406 coupe.

the red leather interior though - that does look good and it might even have the stitched leather instrument pod surround too I think but that wouldnt be enough to swing it for me.

Picking up on some errors in the article. It says that the 2.9 petrol V6 (ES9J4S) wasn’t available in the 407 saloon (and estate). It was. I considered buying one in 2007. Similarly the 2.7 V6 and 3.0 V6 diesels were both available in the saloon, despite what it says. On what basis is the author calling the petrol V6 an old shoe ? Just an unjustified cheap shot, really. The engine is powerful by the standards of the time, smooth, refined, economical for a V6 and reliable (except coil packs). Only downside is a very expensive cam belt change needed every 5 – 10 years.

The main faults of the 407 coupe were being too large, having ill proportions which emphasised the bulbous styling and carrying the wrong badge to satisfy badge snobs.

I'm in the minority of quite liking the looks.

For the money they look like a bargain.
