I agree & did the same thing - the SSS at £14k new offers much more for less IMO
The swift sport is a great car but Suzuki always seem to be held back by poor finance offers.6.9% apr !
A few people have mentioned £14k cars but if they are out there they are well hidden

If I had to finance that sort of amount I'd be doing through a 2.9% personal loan. At least you then have the flexibility to do whatever you need to with the car rather than being tied in to a contract with predetermined length.6.9% apr !

I'm seriously considering one of these as a fun station car, big downsize having new job with hardly any commute and no more prams to lug about.
Anything else to consider besides Swift Sport?
Seem to recall PH did a comparison with a small Mazda (Mazda2 I think), and it was apparently quite good. Other than that the Ibiza FR might be worth a look.Anything else to consider besides Swift Sport?
It's the old formula of Value = Demand/Supply
VW were over subscribed for the 1st run of the up! GTI. I ordered mine 2 weeks after the books opened on the 17th February and didn't get the car until 16th November.
It's been more than worth the wait, perfect car for a cross town commute and was a right laugh when I took it round South West Scotland for a day.
I can see VW having a bit of trouble selling at this price, especially with the used ones on the market.

Can't help thinking it's a bit cheeky that price hike! I must admit the UP GTi looks great though, only seen one or two on the road but has the right ingredients for some real fun.
Realistically though £15k isn't a silly price for it. I paid that for a Twingo 133 Gordini back in 2010 and that offers not dissimilar kinds of fun although I suspect the interior of the VW is a bit more solid.

I bought a 90hp TSi Up beats in Jan 2018 for 8200 brand new pre reg, its basically the same car as the up gti, same engine, just the GTi has a slightly better body kit, slight tweak of suspension. Probably worth 2k on top of the 90hp TSi. You can software mod the 90hp up to 130hp with no problems so there is nothing GTi about the Up GTi, just a name badge. Those who paid 13k or 14k got robbed. Anyone buying one for 16-17k is insane.
I am now getting rid of my UP and getting a MK8 ST Fiesta ST3 for less than 20k. You cannot even compare ST3 to the UP GTi. So anyone who doesnt find the extra few thousand is insane or cannot afford the insurance on the ST. Ford finance is 2.9% apr also so you would probably pay about the same.
On the one hand the up TSi i bought is probably one of the best value cars of the last few years and on the other the up GTi is probably the worst value car on sale, it will cost no more than 8k for VW group to make an UP GTi, probably the highest margin as a percentage of any car on sale currently.

I bought one soon after the order booked opened in Feb 2018 - I lucked out in managing to get a good discount, plus the lower finance and contribution. However I didn't get the car until September.
I love it though, great fun and a real "likeability" that I struggle to get in most cars. The new price seems ambitious, but hopefully means better residuals for mine

What about those Kia Picanto Sports - Gdi or something
Keep catching my eye, seems good value
My wife has an 85bhp X-line auto, it’s far more fun than it should be, and the build / kit is great. Get a decent test drive though, the wheel doesn’t adjust for reach (only height) and can feel a bit distant if you have longish legs. Keep catching my eye, seems good value

As good as the ST is, you've got to ask yourself why Ford are having to knock £2500 off and offer super cheap finance to shift cars, whereas VW are in a position where they can increase prices based on huge demand.Well as an existing owner, I'm chuffed, should help residuals a bit!
Anyway, for £13.5k, they're a bargain small car. There's a lot not to like, but mainly small things (no door button illumination, no arm/foot rest, etc) but you can think, hey, it's a well built, pokey car which steers well with decent styling and a VW GTi badge for £13.5k new. It's the reason they reviewed and sold so well.
Except....I'd be less convinced if I was now paying £16k for it. In fact, I reckon my car with it's paint and options would be about £17.5k under the new pricing, and I don't think it's worth that kind of money. I'd be really interested to see how well they do sell under this new pricing....

The up gti was on my wife’s short list ,she ended up getting a brand new swift sport for just over£14000 at that money the swift just made more sense five seats and quite a bit quicker.
Swift Sport is a cracking car though...I'd have one over an UP for sure! It comes in lurid yellow for a start!andrewparker said:

this is nonsense, paying more than 9k for any VW Up is mad. They are cheap city cars. They are made for no more than 6-7k the rest is profit. No other car on the market has a 100% mark up. A 17k UP will depreciate to 12k in the first 6 months. People are just obsessed with VW GTi. They could put the GTI badge on a pram and people would fall over themselves to pay 5k for it. A Fiesta ST is sold at a slight mark up to what they cost to produce. They could not sell them for much more and they can not sell them for less as they are a £16k car make. If you buy a 17k UP you are still getting a 9-10k car in GTI form.Anyway, for £13.5k, they're a bargain small car. I’ve the Skoda 59bhp version, 5 door. As said, it’s. A great drive. Part of the appeal is the lack of power, planning ahead and keeping momentum compensate.
I've got the same, in pensioner silver. I got it because I didn't drive for ten years so I wanted an 'analogue' driving experience to get back on the road. Its okay and it isn't. Planning ahead, monitoring terrain etc is fun to a degree. The car excels at getting out of a tight parking space when you have a 2 second gap. All the excitement is in the low gears. I get the fear when I'm on the motorway and I see winking brake lights up ahead. If I have to slow down from 70 it takes a good wee while to get the car wound up again. I also have to be careful shifting up from 1st to 2nd as it can be very snatchy and I feather the clutch a lot in 1st I find.
Saying that, I've been up in the Highlands with my Citigo and it never let me down. I had to occasionally bury the accelerator into the floor or change down to an uncomfortably low gear to sustain forward momentum, but there is a sort of thrill to that.
I also moved quite a lot of my possessions from my old flat to my house in it. I prefer the feel of the car with the back seats down and heaps of stuff over the back axle. In that configuration it is basically a small van. You can hide a lot of stuff in the back of it!
A 'hot' version of the Up! would be pretty good fun I imagine.
