Didn't somebody post a video of Ainsley Maitland-Niles nearly binning his G Waggon on a slip road a while ago? Or was that another footballer? I couldn't find anything when I searched.

Bit dramatic calling that "terrifying".

When the camera was spun round though, it showed it was working with two full queues ready to zip merge in turn.
The question is that once those two queues reached the merge point did it continue for the rest of the day?
Or did it revert to normal with some people merging early and some jumping their turn to the front ?
You're looking at the whole ‘turn’ thing back to front. A person's turn to merge is when they reach the merge point. If a person merges early they are choosing to forfeit their turn and are volunteering for a longer wait. It's not jumping if the people in front step aside for you.

The problem comes when everyone chooses to give up their turn you end up with a queue that’s twice as long as it needs to be and often blocks up road features behind that would otherwise be clear.

Most likely the second lane queue did disappear, the vast majority of people misunderstand how roads work and are happy to inconvenience other road users in an attempt to be polite. It's the equivalent of slamming the brakes on and stopping in the way of emergency service vehicles, usually done with good intentions but ultimately extremely unhelpful.

Nah they feel theyre being polite merging early and are expecting the people behind to merge in turn too - see at the merge point how stroppy some of them get with the queue jumpers.

''volunteering for a longer wait' hehe
Have you let them know that smile
Do the sums. Overall the traffic can only move at a speed determined by the capacity after the merge point
As others have said, if some people are making gains it's at the expense of those queuing up - the back of the queue can become stationary.

If everyone in PH held station, formed two neat queues as per the video and merged in turn, it works for everyone cloud9

The sums are simple. If the length of the queue with all the cars in 1 lane is X distance then the length of the queue with cars in 2 lanes will be X divided by 2. This means that if there's a roundabout or junction between 0.5X and 1X from the merge point it will be free flowing if everyone is in 2 lanes and blocked with queuing traffic if everyone is in a single lane. Single lane queuing spreads the misery to the wider community and not just those hoping to pass the merge point.

The solution is for every car entering the queue to join in the lane that extends the shortest distance, that way the queue will self level with no wasted road space. Unfortunately I can't enforce this for everyone, but I can control my actions and not add to the problem.

Arent those type of barriers gradually being removed as they stop people in the road from getting onto the pavement
