Rant: Stolen catalytic converter

I just don't understand why the car manufacturers (Toyota, Honda, etc) are not developing a different way of housing the CAT so its less likely to get stolen in the 1st place.
I'm sure there must be a way of keeping the CAT within the engine bay under the bonnet so thieves cannot get access to them?
I remember when cars back in the 70s and 80s had those long radio aerials that used to get stolen a lot (replaced mostly with wire clothes hangers). The car manufacturers started putting the aerials into the rear windscreens or those shark nose housings attached to the roof that we have now to stop the crime.
Once the car manufacturers make it harder to steal then the crimes will stop.
It's that simple surely?
It is possible,Citreon did it with the xsara picasso its part of the manifold which has the other advantage of running hotter which i believe also makes it more efficient as it gets hotter quicker.I'm sure there must be a way of keeping the CAT within the engine bay under the bonnet so thieves cannot get access to them?

My car has one, which was fine right up until the manifold developed a leak and I got a quote for replacement...Grrbang said:

Do those cat shield things actually do anything? They don't look too substantial, are only fixed in a few places and I assume most enterprising scrotes carry a battery angle grinder these days.
From the videos I've seen they use battery reciprocating saws, great for the thin exhausts but no chance on those plates. Not a nice way to go but he wont be stealing anymore catalytic converters

And also hope that the driver isn't in any way penalised; after all, it's not her fault that some piece of garbage took it upon himself to try and steal bits from under her car.
