Excellent choice, that’s more like it!
It seems Shed is working hard to atone for the vile cancer-inducing Golf repmobile that won last year’s SotY.

A brilliant find. The very definition of Shed of the Week.
This- the absolute archetype of SOTW.
Big, comfy, pretty modern, 300bhp and likely to be surprisingly fast once its finished spinning the front wheels....

Had a 2.0T version of this, superb seats but a seemingly endless series of ABS problems. Interior was extremely poor compared to for example the Lexus we traded it in against. Quite fast though with excellent mid-range acceleration from about 30 to 40 upwards.

I just PX my one after 10 years with it (Longest I ever kept a car, same year, manual and wheels but in blue with cream interior.

Got £700 for it with 152k on the clock.

The rubbing on the arches with the 18's is awful, you get people looking at you as they you have scraped the card you are parking next to.

Its car you can make real progress with and as the police seem to leave you alone in it even though it is obvious you are making swift progress.

Was really sad to let it go but wanted V8 in my life before they all die off.

I've had an S60 D5 and whilst it was supremely comfortable, what lets the S60 down by far is the atrocious steering circle. It became a liability in car parks to the point where I avoided multi storeys.
I was considering an S60 D5 a year ago, to use as my daily shed, but the turning circle was the thing that put me off as the access to my driveway is very tight. I think the turning radius is a rediculous 13 meters. My dad has an earlier, phase 1 V70 and the turning circle on that is only 10 meters for a bigger car!

Aparently there is something you can do with the steering rack to reduce the turning circle. Volvo fitted a different bushing/spacer component, depending on the size of the wheels specified at the factory, so changing this can make it better, although you'd probably also need to run smaller wheels to prevent them rubbing.

Even still - it gets a 10 vote from me - great shed!

It'll never have a good turning circle, the wheel envelope is limited by the fact there's a transverse 5 cylinder under the bonnet!
Usually I'd agree, but my dad's phase 1 V70 is a transverse, fwd 5 cylinder 2.5 TDI (Audi derived engine), and that manages a 10m turning circle in a physcially bigger car. I think the Phase 2 Volvo's are just known for having poor turning, regardless of the engine.

A st turning circle is hardly a deal breaker though.
Actually, It was the only deal breaker for me unfortunately, as I wouldn't have been able to get it onto my driveway. It ticked all the other boxes I was looking for.

Umm... not sure I'd go that far. It's just that on a dull day it must be invisible. Wait, maybe that's why cars all have DRLs these days?

Looks great that does but the 'decat exhaust' in the advert will make things tricky and potentially quite expensive come MOT time.
Sounds like it has a decatted 3 inch downpipe so the power figure might be right.

Will be an issue at mot time for certain though as you say.

Messrs TurboB and Rumblestripe

I concur with you both (sort of, I think!). I'm not a fan of non-coloured cars, and will never own one. Every car I have owned has been colourful, from British Racing Green, through reds of various hues, to several blues. I just prefer them. Maybe that's why I love TVRs...

White has to be the worst in my view - a domestic appliance on wheels.

Current cars are Misano Blue (Alfa) and Stockholm Red* (Volvo)

  • Lord knows what it's actually called, but it's a very nice metallic red....

Another comment to help it towards SOTY!
Had a few of these as company cars in the early 2000s. Always T5 and manual with 18"s so I had to do a double take to make sure it wasn't my old one.
I had this Titanium Grey with Black/Sisal interior which added a bit of colour! Looked a bit like this only paler and more yellow.

Yeah fair enough, but then I own a yellow car so actively try to avoid being the owner of boringly coloured stuff. My wife's car is pink. Do people still believe in stealth cars? Are the Police really less likely to notice a car if it's grey, in an era of speed cameras and ANPR?

The view out of my office window right now contains around 200 cars, I reckon. I can see ONE that isn't a variant of white, silver, grey or black (a light blue Toyota).
Life would be boring if we all liked the same thing. If you enjoy colour; all power to your arm. But sombre colours alone don't make a car dull. And bright colours don't make a bad one attractive.

Anyway, it's not the Police I'd want to be anonymous to; it's other people.

I had one from new. Quickly dubbed the flying sofa by my better half.
Was a quick car, but understeered badly in the wet. I eventually settled on a specific set of tyres (can’t remember which brand) but they were significantly better than the standard.
When buying the car I was sitting in an S60 in the showroom. They didn’t have a T5 on display. The salesman was rattling through specs and engines. He never even mentioned the T5. When I queried this he simply said, “we do have that engine, but it’s so unnecessary!” laugh
Great mile muncher. Lovely car. I won’t mention what it was happy doing on the M54.
Finally. It was silver....but it was fashionable then. (Two blue cars now).

It’s fortunately far away from me but nevertheless still tempting - superb value for money, and a prime example of a ph shed.

I can only go along with the general consensus. Though I have owned this model of S60 with the 2.4 petrol. The missus currently owns a D5 (also spaceball manual, with a 315hp polestar chip). I currently have the newer S60 D3.
Only problem mine had was the common lcd display problem with the obc.
Driving like miss Daisy saw high 40's mpg. Great seats and stereo.

+1 from me, top shed - my dad had an auto 2.4T (170bhp) V70 of the same era which was a comfy old barge and could tow anything! The lack of traction control/ESP also meant it could make some clouds if that was your thing.

Yep. It's a yes from me too.

Had an S60 2.0T a while back and it was a fantastic car in so many ways.

Some memorable things about it:

Truly Fantastic seats
Fantastic stereo (just dig out those old CD's!)
Comical turning circle

It felt great quality, not much went wrong and it would cover distance in supreme comfort. It was very dull to drive spiritedly but that was fine, it never pretended that was its purpose, it's a wafter and all the better for it. Not sure how the T5's are in that regard. Only a few things that I could criticise. 1, should have bought the estate. 2, should have bought an auto (it's that kind of car) and 3, I cannot overstate how bad the turning circle is. You really have to be careful with your line on some mini roundabouts and carparks or you'll be making very embarrassing three point turns. Shouldn't have sold our's in hindsight but I had an Alpina on the way so new car excitement had taken over. Fantastic car though and I'd have another in heart beat. This SOTW looks a beauty and would be a great buy for someone I'm sure.

I had one of these volvos and a saab 95 aero hot of the same year with the heated and ventilated seats and they where the 2 most comfortable seats I've ever had in a car much better than the jags that followed.

Great cars. Unfortunately I never made it to the T5 but bought a D5 as a run about at 120k miles. Wasn’t sure how it would last etc but we took it beyond 270k. By that time the suspension was getting very tired and each MOT was another £600 on wishbones and drop links etc. It was built like a tank, well put together and I thought better than the new 320CDI I used to use.

Best stock stereo I’ve used and the seats were just amazing, lovey things.

Always wanted a manual T5 and a remap smile

Shed perfection! I had a 2.0t from new, same colour, same spaceball, and it was a cracking thing. Alpine stereo is mighty in these too. Just never leave it turned on for anytime with the engine off, they drain a battery in minutes.

Fantastic car. Not even really a shed. Had a 2003 S60 D5 manual for I think 12 or so years - as with other posters really great seats unlike my 5 series, fantastic stereo and very solid build. Perfect long distance motorway car. Negatives - eats suspension parts though they are quite cheap, dash binnacle had to be sent away for an electrical fix and truly terrible turning circle. That said definitely one of my best ever cars. It's still doing duty as occasional courtesy car for my mates garage and now has over 250k on the clock. I was on the original clutch at about 235k! Big oil leak soon after but fixed and still going strong. Mega miles and very few issues.

I had a 2.5T in this colour with the same wheels and it was lovely!

The performance from that with 215bhp was brilliant! So a mapped T5 must be superb!
