There is such a lot of love for this car. What interests me is that when these were new they a) didn't sell very well b) weren't highly rated in road tests. I think what it says is that what 2nd buyers look for in car (value, practicality ?) is somewhat different to what journalist assess cars on (gadgets, handling ?) and new buyers choose on (image, lease rates ?). Any thoughts ? BTW - brilliant shed. so much car for so little money and not silly risk with it
Noticed too, the current ‘Brave Pill’ article is for a front wheel drive 247bhp car of similar weight, similar cost new and more than 4-cylinders. Neither class-leading in the handling department but seemingly both much admired, mostly down to the engine from many posters.
Difference is the Alfa 147 GTA will cost five times as much

No bravery required for the Volvo?

Very nice, I think you either get a fast Volvo or you don't, judging by this thread I think there are plenty of people that do! Co-incidentally, my mate's just bought another S60 D5 and it makes the most satisfying 'thunk' when you shut the doors! I don't know what his plans are for this one but the last one had a few 'go faster' bits and rather enjoyed eating front tyres, going around a roundabout in an 'old mans car' with the outside front wheel smoking and was always pretty entertaining...

Top thumbup

I had an S60 T5 a few years back too. It was only a few registration characters away and looks identically specced to this SOTW, so I suspect they were fleet/demo/batch cars!

Sold mine to an ex-policeman who fell in love with it as it reminded him of the motorway cars.

You've hinted at what I think the answer is. When a car is this age and this price, dependability and durability seem far more important factors than absolute dynamics. When brand new, I guess this was a similar price to a 330i or something? It would be hard for many to overlook the BMW at that point. But take a look at what the average E46 330 looks like at £1200 vs Volvos like this. Totally different world. You can buy something like this and genuinely enjoy the ownership experience which is often far more of an overriding factor than what it's like on a B-Road.

As an aside I still have my OEM wishbones, I kept them as the bushes were knackered and I was planning to polybush them. Supposedly a great modification. Free if anyone wants them :thumb up: At one point I researched Ohlins but never made the leap, shame, I think a D5 would be a great sleeper.

I bought this last week for 950 with tyres, control arm and ABS ring to do. The cars history also mentions a gripper differential.

Congratulations. I'd be interested to know how it goes. Great first post.

Handy addition with over 300 horses through the front tyres!
