I LOVE pickups. I'm a tradesman but use a van. A pick up would be a pleasure vehicle. I'd also use it for camping and tip runs... Both of which I regularly do so I would use the rear tray.
As some others have said, they need better engines. I don't mind the 60 limit. You would be fine at 70. You don't really want to go any faster in these things anyway.
A nice F150 raptor or GMC Denali Or a Ram would do me just fine
Can't take pickups to our local tips!As some others have said, they need better engines. I don't mind the 60 limit. You would be fine at 70. You don't really want to go any faster in these things anyway.

Pick up trucks when used as pick up trucks, as far as my experience goes, are brilliant. For basic ability to move something from A to B, they are great. Many years ago I had a Defender 90 pick up, only downside from a practicality perspective was the tiny load bed. I then upgraded/downgraded (depending on your POV) to this longer version:
I was about to say something about having an open-top pick up truck, then realised that would put me firmly in the PH hairdressing tattooed chav camp, so I'll refrain from doing so.

I’m a fan of proper old school pickups. Ideally a Single cab, non turbo diesel, rwd Hilux.
Mine never let me down, I did loads of miles over 6 years and being able to put bags/shopping/sports kit in the back was great. Wish I still had it!
My late father, when asked by me if he fancied getting a new style double cab truck with a car style interior replied “no mate, I work for a living”. Delivered with a straight face.

Still can to ours there. Had to take a huge load of garden waste to the tip on Sunday and nearly all the other vehicles were Rangers/pickups etc. They've banned certain vans and trailers etc, but if you have a van that will fit under the height bar, or a pickup, you can still go in up to 6 times a year I believe, but have to register. Works for all those who have them as "lifestyle vehicles" because who needs to go to the tip 6 times a year? Not sure if they are Chav, but i don't get them.
We were having a new bathroom installed and the guy who runs the firm came over in his Mitsubishi/Nissan/Ford Rapist/Wife Beater/Soccer Thug or whatever it was called.
It was it has to be said, a magnificent thing that thoroughly intimidated my Discovery Sport when parked up on the drive. However as i helped the guy unload stuff from it, the whole thing came across as really impractical. A high load bed with a big flat cover that had to be lifted up to get access. You couldn't put anything with any height in there.
His workers came in Transits which appeared far more practical. The latest ones, looked pretty luxurious up front too.
I can see why a pickup without a load cover would work if you were lugging a small cement mixer around or if you were carrying hay bales or animal feed bags about. Vans day to day just seem a whole lot better.

I've managed to get round the garden waste issue though with a box of biscuits instead of a permit.
I seriously considered adding a Ford Raptor to my winter house in Arizona. - I do not have any practical reason for having one, but there just seem quite cool to me. In the end the practical reason to make another choice was the height. Was just not great for my Great Dane to jump and and out of the back seats. I went with a Jeep Wrangler instead. ( I do lots of off-roading in the desert, so any kind of 4x4 is used to a significant degree.)
There is no question that non-work pickups are incredibly popular here- huge sellers. Admittedly gas is relatively inexpensive and there is lots of space and uncrowded roads, but in Toronto where I mainly live I see them here, and in a underground parking lot an F-250 dualie is a massive thing to see; even less reason for one in the city.
Still, I was tempted in Arizona..they fit into the landscape.
