Diesel a bit yesterday now though.
I'd agree with that and I'm guessing that buyers are moving more towards petrol/petrol hybrid/full electric now.

There is still something slightly appealing about a noisy torquey diesel engine if you do lots of miles though I reckon. As diesels die out I'm starting to see them as a nice bit of old school perhaps.

I'll never forget the first time I drove a 330d back in 2006(I wanted to hate it because I associated them with being smokey and just not very nice), but the performance and how quick it felt is still with me now. I also had a Cerbera 4.5 at the time so I had something quick to compare it to.

Diesel, No Thank You.
Exactly what I was thinking.

Even when diesels were supposedly the bees knees I didn't want one, the diesel-gate makes sure I will never have another.
60+ mpg on a run
My local Esso attendant isn’t my best mate
Will stick with diesel until there is a viable alternative wink

Have you ever considered people might exist who actually need decent fuel economy? I didn't need a diesel once upon a time so I chose not to buy any. Until I started doing 80-100 mile commutes a day.

That rear shot of the white car... how boring!
Looks like a mid 90s Toyota Camry, just with a few extra fake vents cause racecar

No guarantees though, as BMW decided not to bring the M550d here. UK buyers who wanted that engine were forced to have it in an SUV.
I know it’s of no real relevance here, but just as an aside, it is my understanding that the 550d engine (probably turbos/ancillaries) could not be packaged in a RHD 5-series configuration.

Wasn't the petrol 340 roundly slated as being aloof, distant and dull to drive by evo magazine this month?
That’s the thing, they’ll never own one, Journalists get a press car, spank them on twisty roads for a day and then moan when they’re ‘dull’. The only time they praise a car is when it’s a super car or something RWD with 500 bhp.

I had a 430d for nearly 3 years and LOVED it, brilliant car. I can’t imagine the M340i or M340d being in any way shape or form....dull. Unless my job is to test cars and most of them being high performance cars.

Sometimes car journalists are full of st. Sorry to say jt

Tesla model 3 is around 4p per mile or 154mpg.

No maintenance costs either and you never have to see your esso attendant ever again

How on earth do you derive an MPG figure for an electric car!?

This is interesting as it’s a choice I had to recently make.

BMW 330E or Tesla model 3.

The BMW was better in every way with the exception of 0-60 times and tech.
Notably the interior materials and build quality of the BMW were a league above the Tesla’s.
I’ve ordered the BMW.
That said the 3 is hugely impressive considering it’s Tesla’s first try in the segment.

Divide the cost per mile of the electric car by the cost of a gallon of fuel.

You forgot running costs and convenience of charging at home too. Oh and price

So really the bmw only won on interior build quality and fit and finish.

who have driveways..

I'm only teasing. I love EV's and they have a place. My wife drives an EV and I have a BEV.

EV's are great for domestic and commuting. But you cant beat a diesel for business and commercial spontaneous usage.

I'm going back to BMW or Jag 6 pot Diesel next for many reasons.

I do like a big multi cylinder diesel engine. Presumably this engine will end up in a 5 series as the 540d? Or for us brits is the 530d deemed sufficient?

I'm pretty sure you can charge a 330e at home as well. Depending on how far you drive it running costs can be minimal, but then if you want to go a bit further you can do that without dicking around at a Motorway Service station.

You don't get the paid up cult membership and lifetime devotion to a slightly unbalanced South African, but for some of us that's another benefit wink

So really it was just fit and finish no other logical reason hehe

I’d say the tech is a big one.

Guess this effectively replaces the 335d? That car sold well here, so would make sense for BMW bring it to the UK.
No guarantees though, as BMW decided not to bring the M550d here. UK buyers who wanted that engine were forced to have it in an SUV.
This pretty much is the 335d (yes yes they'll up the power by a couple of bhp to be closer to S4). The whole 35 and 40 i and d were there because BMW couldn't make up their mind how to badge their cars and the same engine was marked as 35 in one car and 40 in another...

Also M550d was a niche. 335d and 335i are aplenty.
