I remember at the age of about 11, going to watch the Lombard in Hamsterley Forest when the Quattro debuted - in the cold and damp, the noise and flames were mesmerising. Compared to the Escorts, Talbots and Chevettes, the Audi was visiting from the future. Later in as service halt, I saw Mikkola burble past and this thing looked like it had been beamed from space. It just had massive, brooding presence - all arches and spotlights, and a the huge Audi entourage in tow with dozens of liveried up VW LT vans with roof racks full of tyres.

Many years later, I was at the Audi dealer in Dorchester with my father who had his C3 100 in for a service. The sales staff were all wetting themselves as they had a 20v on loan from Milton Keynes and were taking it out in turns. The knew dad well so they let the 2 of out in it on our own for half an hour. Dad drove it for a bit, then let me drive it back. My lack of skill and talent didn't do it any justice but it remains etched in my memory as a fabulous experience - the noise and the relentless rush through the gears!

Now my kids are growing up I can fit one into my life but sadly they are 5 times the price of anything I can afford. If only I had bought one when they were £6k - familiar story right?

I found these - must be amongst the best available and just the thing if you fancy something from the start and end of the run but £100k each!!!

Of all the great rally stories the Quattro was involved in, I love this one. 1982 Scottish and Mikkola breaks the suspension at the first corner of the first stage and has to reverse the entire stage. He starts stage 2 in last place and then spends the entire rally climbing up the leader board, overtaking Vatenen, Blomqvist, Brooks, McRae, Ekland and Toivenon to take the win!
