You are delusional if you really think EV will be cheaper than petrol for ever. Once the tipping point comes where EV's outsell ICE the government will tax as they will not lose the income generated from fuel. More than likely a tax per mile.

The want fossil cars gone, all of them, they will always be taxed more then EVs

They will tax per mile but fossil cars will get it as well and have to pay fuel tax and probably higher VED

I can't ever see pricing per mile but I can see Irish levels of VED to make up the shortfall.

Is there a standard plug/socket shape for EVs yet? Can I use the charger lead from a Kia in a Corsa or are they still at the VHS/Betamax stage?

Instead of going all out on road charging, surely a straightforward way of calculating the tax/VAT on fuel used in EVs is to have some sort of SIM installed into the handset of the plug/socket of each vehicle?
This, of course, will rely on some sort of universal standard across all vehicles though.
Type 2 with fast CCS is the EU standard, even Tesla's have it now.

Some Japanese cars are hanging onto Chav-emo chargers thou

Its quite costly to roll out but most cars have for some time had GPS and data built into them

A far simpler solution is to geo fence areas with camera's (like London has) and have a daily charge if you enter a zone during a certain time period

This is super easy to do on M-Ways as you just need an ANPR camera on every on and off ramp

Absolute no range anxiety what so ever. 20 litre Jerry can in the boot gives me a couple of hundred miles as backup if needed.
No range anxiety, but you carry a dangerous amount of fuel in a temporary container. Yeah, sure I believe you.
Lol dangerous amount of fuel. Don't be a wet fart please. This isn't the movies.
Not dangerous? Hit it with a pick axe then throw a match at it. Get back to me now that goes for you.

A 20 litre constrainer should not legally be accepted at UK forecourts. It can't legally be used to store fuel at home. And it shouldn't be carried inside a vehicle due to the buildup of fumes that can cause an explosive atmosphere, even in your boot that's conveniently close to your rear light bulbs wiring and filaments. Hopefully it's just your funeral when it all goes wrong.

Anyone who has driven in a foreign country especially when there have been closures on the autobahn will see why it is handy to have spare as detours do happen.
So you do have range anxiety then...

laugh

I dont mind myself.
Annoying thing for me is I have one of those VP Racing fuel jugs and sometimes it's a problem filling it up, because it's plastic. But sealed and high quality.

Jesus Christ, you need to get out more.
You’ve never been into trackdays then or foreign roadtrips. (Stupid question, as you can’t wait to see the death of the motorcar).

To head off thousands of miles, across several countries and not take a can of petrol is plain stupid. Unless you like wasting a day of your holiday waiting for the recovery company to come and get you from up a mountain pass.
You can plan all you like but things happen along the way.

I’ve read it all now mind. A grown man scared to have a can of petrol in his car. I hope you don’t apply that logic to all aspects of your life or you’ll never leave the house. Better not shower either, just incase you slip on that lethal slippery floor and hit your head. And don’t ever carry anything down the stairs. You’re guaranteed to not live to tell that tale.

This forum has gone to the dogs. Eco nutcase, snowflake, extremist, anxiety sufferers.
Again, Jesus Christ.

I’m going to make sure I stay off this thread. There’s a tiny percentage of people speaking any sense.
The rest well, wow, just wow.

RIP PistonHeads forums. Once frequented by level headed car enthusiasts. Now taken over by mumsnet, Daily Mail, panickers.

This talk of driving around Europe with 20 litres of fuel in the boot... careful as in some countries that will get you a fine. You'll get an even bigger fine if you get caught coming across some borders with it. Don't try and cross from Spain into Portugal for example.

Try hitting a Tesla cell with an axe. Get back to me how that goes for you:

Don't need to watch the video, I've been to a certified test house and witnessed the UN38.3 testing.

Difference is, a cell is enclosed within a battery and within a chassis designed to protect it. The Ampera had.one of the highest side impact scores because GM designed the car to protect the battery system.

A Jerry can in the boot, a crumple zone, is not designed for it.

Triggered?

I've done track days. I drive to the nearest petrol station. I don't drive 1000 miles with petrol in a Jerry can.

I've done adventure driving through wilderness. It was petrol being carried outside where it is supposed to be.

But hey, if you two want to win Darwin Awards then crack on. Perhaps drive on bald tyres too, or maybe without brake pads? Grown men don't need brakes!

I've driven old cars across Europe and Africa where the fuel tank was the crumple zone. I'll not be getting overly excited about a spare can in the boot of a modern vehicle.

Obviously not. Places like Cadwell Park and Blyton park don't have petrol on site (Cadwell does but basic and often empty) and the nearest stations only have basic fuel and if you had gone to track days you would have seen dozens of people with Jerry cans full.

Indeed. I'm sure loads of people on here aren't into cars and are just here for the watches or something.

I think this presentation goes a long way to demonstrate how quickly the transition to electric will occur.

I hope the modern attention span can cope with an entire hour on the subject.

Blimey. I've done dozens of trackdays and driven all over Europe. Never stuck spare petrol in the car.

The only petrol-carrying things I own are for the mower and a little 700ml one for bike trips, because it doesn't have a fuel gauge just a warning light that means <20 miles left.
