The McLaren GT has that odd and non-descript styling of a Grand Theft Auto car.
That's good analogy.

The mid engine Corvette is the same.

Bentley for me and a no contest at that. Straight in the euromillions garage.

Can see the appeal of the Merc if I was wanting to go relatively unnoticed though.

Either of the British cars for me, the Merc is lovely too but just not special enough in this company.

The Bentley interior is perfection.

I note that Broadspeed are doing £25k off list on the Merc already...

Three cars hopelessly contrived together, like the mutants at table 9 (from The Wedding Singer).

I'd struggle to see much cross shopping here, and frankly I don't get the Mac in this company. It's not so much that there's not much love for it, it's more a case of fitness for purpose. If you wanted to blast around a race track, the big mac would easily be the choice here. But that's not the brief, and getting your nose out of joint is a bit like expecting a fish to be able to fly.

I don't rate the Conti much; it seems like a septuagenarian. To say it's newer in design against it's peers suggest's the alternative must be even older. Not a high bar to set then, if that's the case.

I really liked the styling of the previous continental, but this one looks terrible to my eyes in these photos. I presume that it won't look quite as bad in the metal though.

Given McLaren have marketed it as a GT the comparisons have to be expected.

Bentley is lovely but could never actually own one. They just inspire the wrong reaction in too many people....

5 yr old Mercs are £50k and model is reaching end of life when it will take another hit...

Real question is - Does the world really need GT cars these days? Seriously, who has the time to drive down to the South of France that often ?

Ugly, ungainly and barely fit for purpose. More niche filling nonsense from Woking.

And because it's so confused and poorly styled I wouldn't be surprised if it's depreciation is even worse than its sportier, better looking siblings.

If that's possible...
Yep entirely agree.
Ditto.

McLaren's Lotus Europa.

Mclaren is not even worth considering. It has no dealer network and the parts supply is next to non existant. The other two, at least they can be driven almost anywhere with dealer support never that far away..
Is that what you took from this article? Parts supply? Or was this a little tongue in cheek? Are you suggesting owning a McLaren is akin to owning a used ford mondeo in terms of buyer mindset?

There have been many recent articles around the (poor) quality of Mac parts supply / dealer support. I think any owner expects to get a reasonable level of support, and certainly at the big end of town, the expectation of service may be greater. After all, when you're spending serious money, you expect a little pampering.

I don't have any experience with getting any car serviced by Mac, yet there seem to be quite a lot of people complaining about it.

My GT is on 120,000 miles from new it’s been all over Europe ski racing, South of France, Italy etc. I’m in the BDC you would be surprised how many are used as intended.

Quite are few are just nice daily’s first the sort who have quite a few cars. For example my Friend has it next to his other 20 something Bentley’s.

I very much doubt it will sell more than 10% of the Lotus (Elise) Europa's production (456 off).

yes

Bentley would be my choice out of the 3, wouldn't even consider the other 2, its by far the closest to a GT car in the traditional sense of the meaning.

biggest issue is inability to travel at "GT" speeds today. just imagine if you could time-warp today's Continental back to the roads and policing of the 70s!

It’s certainly a fair point that the customer expectation of reliability and client service is probably different when you are comparing to Bentley, Aston Martin and Mercedes, rather than to Ferrari and Lamborghini. McLaren are not far below the supercar rivals, but quite a bit short of the GT rivals.

You know, I'm OK with it being a GT. I would say it's a 'fast GT'. It can carry your weekend bags, it lets you munch big miles without being totally knackered (even if you know you have done those miles) and then it's a bit of a sports car when you get there. That's what I want from a GT.

As usual I think the definition is not black and white.

McLaren every time!

GT = long road trips. But the journey should be fun, not disappear. If you want it to disappear, then fly. It's much quicker and cheaper.

McLaren have produced a version of their core product that can easily be used for long trips, and is able also to make the journey fun. Hats off to them. I hope at some point I can afford one.

I'm with Mr Metcalf on this one 🙂
