What I don’t understand is the obsession over running a hose into a car’s interior?

Is this the defenders version of a freemasonry installation? Run a hose through the car and carry a sheep and you get to be part of a club? hehe

All my defender owning mates, never run a hose through the car... and they have the tdi ones which don’t have anything to worry about.

Although they are all fancy tarts chariots as they have door cards, plastic dash boards, sound deadening and all sorts of limp wristed comforts.

My 80” has none of that cause it’s a proper Land Rover. It’s got metal for a dash, no sound deadening or door cards.

I like this new defender. Prefer the 110 but I’m glad it’s being made and has a decent spec from standard before any options.

As SUV's go I quite like the styling of this.

I'm not quite sure if it's supposed to be a genuine no nonsence off roading machine or a boulevard cruiser that's trying to look tough, perhaps in reality it's a bit of both?

You are a very bad man.

I own a '89 LR110 CSW and a '91 LR90 and you are showing me Unimog porn?

Even if I sell both my LRs, a kidney and some limbs, I cannot afford a new Defender, so a Unimog is just cruel and unusual punishment.

Go on, you know you want it.

A little one won't hurt.

All this New Defender bashing....not as good as the old one. Maybe someone could build new old ones, You know like those kit car recreations of old Jags. Then the owners of the. New old Defender kits could call them Defenders.....just saying.

I love this thread! Love all the hosing out/farmer comments.

I'm pretty sure JLR aren't aiming this at the die hard, old defender owner, the ones who wear trousers with too many pockets, own a CB radio and have poor personal hygiene...

Saw a new defender on the motorway yesterday. Had a roof box and a sticker under the plate saying "prototype vehicle".

It was fking massive. I did not expect that. It just looked huge!

What's more reliable...a new Defender or. 20 year old Vitara?

I bet the Suzuki. I would trust the LR production team to make my toast in the morning.

I like it, both sizes. I’ve driven many original defenders for work, and as work cars (for towing a shell and auger drill rig) they were bloody brilliant, and would get you out of a boggy mess better than anything else. Utterly wonderful at that, terrible at anything else, other than ‘looking cool’.

I have a Freelander 2 at the moment, and a 3/4 year old new defender is the only thing I can think of to replace it, other than a Discovery 4.

I really hope they are successful.

Not that I’m trying to suggest there aren’t plenty of problems that people take Land Rovers (or BMWs or Audi’s for that matter given they faired worse in this years JD Power reliability ratings) back to the dealers for, but the reality is that in this day and age, reliability is a bit of a funny one. You probably find that an absolutely tiny percentage of the issues are to do with things breaking. Almost everything will be software related....error messages, systems crashing (probably the infotainment in particular) and weird quirks like refusals to select a gear when cold and stuff like that. It’s no wonder really given the increasing amounts of technology and integration in a modern car.

And possibly the reason the Japanese cars fair so well is because they so often seem to make do with user interfaces that are lifted out of a 1992 a Sony VHS recorder. It’ll never go wrong because it was last redesigned 25 years ago!

We’re at an interesting inflection point with cars. Either things will start to get massively better as over the air updates start to become commonplace, or the whole industry will implode with a load of angry people with cars displaying messages about steering system faults whilst dealers order £25,000 worth of components for absolutely no reason other than the money they’ll get paid for changing them....

A lot will depend on who's producing your software updates.

The staple use of a Land Rover is,well, just what the name says. About as basic as a 2CV, needing few tools to repair on the farm. And that is the point; a Defender was designed for off-road use, not the Kings Road. I can just see a farmer, his boots covered in slurry, climbing aboard this new version - and then hosing it out in the farm yard later on. Not. So once again I guess that Toyota and others will be rubbing their hands and looking forward to a boost in orders.
We have a Bingo. Quite early on for a Defender thread too.

Our lines are now closed. You won't be entered into the competition but you may still be charged for the call.
Haha, I'm surprised it took so long to be honest. laugh
Yeap it looks about as tough as the snowflakes its aimed at

You've had experience with a Slovakian-built Land Rover then?

I think that they should have dreamt up another name instead of Defender, as this is not a proper replacement for a rugged of- as it will not be able to take the knocks and abuse like the old/current car as well as being "easy" to keep going with minimal tools etc in a conventional Land Rover environment. As others have mentioned , this is purely aimed at the Urban crowd like many of its contemporaries.I was hoping that Land Rover at least would have understood that there is a market for "simple" affordable tough off-road vehicles....still.
Saying all that however, these will sell very well I believe, so good luck to Land Rover...although I for one will not be buying as ,apart from anything else , it looks like it would be more at home in a kitchen along side the microwave and toaster etc ?!!!

I suppose for those who hanker after the old Defender, there’s always old Defenders.

Neither is this:
