I think it looks worse than the last model, especially the front as like someone else said, it's like the glasses have slid down the nose.
I'm sure it'll be great to drive (we have a mk5 GTI and it's great) but I just think the 7.5 is much sweeter looks wise.
Plus the GTI badge in the middle is awful, that'd be getting removed straight away!

I hate seeing new cars being knocked especially when they've so much skill ,care and expertise put into them.

However what I will say is , that having seen the MK 8 in all it's forms - well most of them - that I am very pleased that I still have ( bought from new) my 2007 ,15,000 mile Edition 30.

Of course ,it goes without saying that the later cars are technically and in many other ways superior to the MK 5 GTI's and Edition 30's but maybe there's just a little something missing ?
You love it so much you've done just over 1000 miles a year in it? confused

Good for you sir, and ignore the childish comments made.

You are absolutely spot on with your comment, they have somehow lost some character from Mk7 to Mk8.

The golf GTI has a relatively unique position as a hot hatch format. It isn’t shouty and is subtle enough to blend in anywhere. It doesn’t look out of place in a work or client’s car park which could be a concern with other hot hatches. It is a premium product and a nice place to be but still provides decent performance in a medium sized hatch.

Although bland it fits the above criteria so I think VW are spot on with the gentle evolution of the model so that it doesn’t stray too far from this. I have a mk7 GTI and from what I’ve seen it doesn’t look like it’s worth an upgrade, but as a new prospect it would be a very good car to a lot of people.

I thought it would look better than this, the GTI in particular looks like an R Line spec car.
I actually think they’ve made the GTD look better than the GTI, very odd.

Agree and definitely sack the wheel designer. There isn't one wheel design I actually like from those photos.

Wouldn't say it's that unique considering the Leon Cupra achieves the same thing except it's faster and looks better...

Not childish at all, just a genuine question to tiggyzak's original post. Now that there is a little more context that's fair enough and I glad he enjoys it.

The Golf GTI is seen by many as the original GTI. It has always followed the same format. Using subtle styling to enhance the look and performance upgrades to enhance the way it goes, but still remaining a VW. i.e. German, sensible, functional, and perhaps a little boring to some.

Is never tried to be the fastest or the loudest and this latest generation continues with that theme.

What it does do well, and I'm sure this version will be the same, is be a great all rounder.

I thought previous generations always looked reassuringly expensive, solid, quality, German basically. This looks cheap. Take the badge off and that nasty bonnet shut line screams Chinese. Yuk. (interior looks great though to be fair)

No problems Water Fairy. You're quite right - I SHOULD use it more.

I'm afraid that I've fallen into the trap over the years of every nice car that I've had I've not used them enough. I could send you to sleep telling you about all the cars I've had and their low mileages.Lotus Cortinas,V12 E Type ,all the Integrales, all the Cosworths - I could go on and on. But I've not taken them for granted and have always cared for them - probably a little too much !.

Now I'm too bl***y decrepit to get in and out of the golf easily even if I had the time to !

To get back to your original remark. As I said you are probably correct so please don't worry.

There’s safe and boring and it appears there is now the equivalent of hearing aid beige. That is so dull. They will sell millions, it will drive lovely and motoring writers will be having wet dreams over them so what do we know.

I’ve had three mk7 golfs, but that interests me not one bit.

Is VW now playing it so safe it can’t come out to play until after tea time?
