everything about the new GTi interior looks mint, the seats, the finish, the red bits.

the wheels are a fail, no doubt to get you to option up the 19inch versions.

Got a face that is a cross between Roland Rat, Wallace, of Wallace and Grommit fame and Jaws the bond villain.

The only Golf DNA I can see is the thick 'C' pillar.

Oh, and those wheels, a child on a spirograph could have done a better job.

@50% more...

Why compromise? Might as well get a Bentley Supersport instead if you want a warm family car.

Think the Mk7 looks better overall, the 8 looks a bit unresolved? Needs to be seen in the metal obviously. VW OEM wheels have mostly looked rubbish (and are heavy anyway) so nothing new here. Interior pretty neat IMO, but hope the ergonomics haven't suffered in the general crusade to replace buttons with screens.

Not the only sign of cheapening things unfortunately, bonnet not fully painted inside, simple engine cover, no gas struts for the bonnet, no more battery case... Mostly cosmetic perhaps -- hopefully a sign they could get the weight down even more. Mk7 did pretty well in that area.

What I haven't really seen confirmed (outside of this article) is the solution for the FWD car's front diff. Quick browse through the German press only mentions some sort of "electronic" diff, which sounds more like the usual cheap solution done via braking...

It isn’t exactly the fairest comparison is it. The Focus ST, which will be the direct competitor from Ford to the GTI, isn’t that wildly styled either even if it’s looks may, or may not, be preferable to the GTI.
Which makes you think!

Bless, did your mummy help you with that comment?
I tend to agree with him. That's beyond subtle. It's beige.
I would go one better and say it is verging on ugly.
It's like a beige person trying to look modern and doing it wrong. Just look at that cluster of spotlights in the front bumper. What the heck was that meant to be?

This thread is quite fascinating - I had a look back at the equivalent thread on here for when the MK7 was revealed in 2013....

https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=12...

Amazing how many people back then said the same sort of things they're saying now. In 2020 however, the MK7 is being held up as an all-time great and people are saying they won't sell their MK7s for a MK8.

I think this new MK8 may be colour sensitive and in a grey for example, it will look quite smart. I also think that like the MK7 before it, it will do very well and probably in 7 years from now people will be back on PH moaning "I don't like the look of the new Mk9, I will keep my old petrol powered MK8 thank-you".

In a darker colour and with a different set of wheels i think it could look alright. Those wheels pictured absolutely ruin it.

Go froward a year and it will be spot the golf WITHOUT a broken lower grill light biggrin They just look prone to stones etc. hitting and smashing them.

OK in a car with just one, as you replace it, with this you would replace one and still have another 9 that will get smashed at any time. With potholes/stones on the ground in this country, it will happen. I am, of course, assuming that it is 10 lights, could be just the 2 with the honeycomb grill making it look like 10....

Rear OK. Side OK, front doesn't look right and not good wheels.

One thing that the MK8 has got better with, is the interior. The MK7 inside is nice but feels a little dated.

Edited by Dracoro on Thursday 27th February 00:03
Single broken spotlight sir? That’s not a problem. You understand we have to replace the whole grill and other nine too?

Sure, in 2013 the usual suspects were saying the then-new Mk7 looked "dull", "boring", "a lazy design", "white goods", etc, etc - a standard PH response to the styling of a newly announced VWG car.

However, that 2013 thread doesn't seem to have recurring references to the Mk7's styling being unresolved or ugly - "dull", yes, but not "bling" - which are frequent references in this thread.

Interestingly, Carwow's Mk8 GTI preview vid has a survey: "VOTE: Which looks better? 1. Golf GTI 2. Cupra Leon" - and at time of writing, 86% favour the Cupra: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aicWFRDOVFI

Also, the Carwow vid highlights the new GTI-font - even that looks 'orrible frown

Indeed. I thought the Mk7 looked boring in 2013 and it still looks boring today. This new mk8 looks boring AND ugly.

I've always liked the GTIs but this one does look a bit of a bland follow-up. I'm sure it will be nice to drive whilst you're waiting for the equally bland but hopefully better R.

But if it's built anything like my other half's new version Polo I would avoid it. Cheap rattling plastic interior and poor fitting trim generally. Like being in a Toyota from 10 years ago. And the petrol cap isn't flush with the bodywork either despite two visits to correct it.

it's as boring as the previous models in terms of looks imo

should be near £40k when nicely spec'd for the diesel
That's what you said in 2013 (sorry someone posted the link)

very ugly imo.

also the performance one would be the only one to go for and with xenon's etc not being standard but *must haves* I think things could get very expensive - £35k specced?
At least you're super consistent... always £10k out after discount wink

That looks awful. Take a Kia, add some Hyundai, and then add some hideous wheels and a van dashboard. I’m actually quite upset at how bad it looks....

No problems Water Fairy. You're quite right - I SHOULD use it more.

I'm afraid that I've fallen into the trap over the years of every nice car that I've had I've not used them enough. I could send you to sleep telling you about all the cars I've had and their low mileages.Lotus Cortinas,V12 E Type ,all the Integrales, all the Cosworths - I could go on and on. But I've not taken them for granted and have always cared for them - probably a little too much !.

Now I'm too bl***y decrepit to get in and out of the golf easily even if I had the time to !

To get back to your original remark. As I said you are probably correct so please don't worry.

What's wrong with Kia or Hyundai?
