RE: New Volkswagen Golf GTI officially revealed
Discussion
It looks alright, nothing much to dislike. The overall shape and details look pretty clean and crisp, it's just a bit boring though but a typical Golf in that regard. I know these diamond cut wheels are fashionable and look quite eye-catching but I can't say I'm the biggest fan. The GTD seems to sit somewhat lower than the GTI for some reason? Plus I think I prefer the dual exit exhaust over the separate tail pipes.
The spec's look decent, seems like these should perform well based on what's come previously. As a good performing all rounder on a lease it probably makes some sence and would be worthy of consideration, it's just not something that particularly excites me though.

We've always had a Golf in the garage from 2006, an R32 which was a great car albeit a bit heavy and thirsty and then GTDs. They do everything so well. No faults other than general wear/tear items. It seems that generally the Mk8's styling is, umm, not exactly popular.
Anyone bet against a styling refresh - new front and rear lights, and a new steering wheel - after only 2 years? (I think the wheels will remain, they're a ploy to encourage upgrading to what will no doubt be a range of cooler-looking 19s.)

I have to agree that it looks quite dull, but having owned 2 Golfs and 1 Jetta, dull is not always a bad thing. Dull means less things to fall off or break. I’m just sad that no diesel will be sold in the US. I’m holding onto my BMW 335d until it falls apart or I decide to buy a Tesla.

That looks awful. Take a Kia, add some Hyundai, and then add some hideous wheels and a van dashboard. I’m actually quite upset at how bad it looks....
What's wrong with Kia or Hyundai? “Not only does its powertrain feature the same 'twin dosing' system seen on the new Passat - which selectively injects AdBlue upstream of two separate SCR catalytic converters, reducing NOx emissions by up to 80 per cent”
Does the use of this AdBlue stuff outweigh any waste in the production, packaging, transportation and disposal of the AdBlue stuff?

They dont have a design identity and as such tend to pump out generic designs with marginal tweaks.

Even if any of this was about the environment, I think likely yes -- the stuff is 68% water and 32% piss, not advanced chemistry. Trucks fill up at dedicated service station pumps, the smaller volume packaging & supply thing should be similar to pre-mixed wiper fluid. Only you need less AdBlue. The diesel haters on here are encouraged to reflect. Every fecking car powered by devil's fuel sold will make a much smaller impact on the fleet's Co2 budget. Leaving room for the nice things.
Body is uninspired but that has never been VW strong suit. Wondering if it will be as much fun as the very first VW Rabbit (first series of car sold in US) I owned. Sorry to say that grill is horrid! Interior looks like it will be OK as well as the mechanical bits...engine and trans, suspension, brakes.etc. Hopefully, the R versions will be at least as good as past versions.
Seems VW could have invested a bit more time in styling of the body. This one looks too much like an appliance than a car that we would get excited about.

Looks like a step back externally to me. The 7/7.5 was a good looking car but umm it sure about this. The big, singular lower grille makes it look like a basking shark. The GTI wheels are awful and why to VW persevere with sodding diamond cut wheels? They just don’t last well.
The interior looks pretty good but I think in reality it’s a shame that they’ve ditched buttons for touchscreens and touchpads. I get that this stuff looks nice in a show room but I don’t think it works practically.
They’ll sell loads because it still looks like a Golf and this won’t really scare serial Golf buyers off. I’m not a fan based on the pictures but I think they had a tough job on their hands because the previous model was so good and well regarded.

AdBlue helps minimising air pollutants that affect your lungs, and the growing lungs of kids, particularly in urban environments, it's not about overall emissions, more about air quality. I'm so fond of the Golf Mk 7 with its normal speedo dials. Has Apple Car Play too. Can't see many owners chopping them in for a mk 8 as I put the mk 7 as one of the best all round cars ever although I personally like the Mk 8 too. Very 911 like this update other than styling a backward step but looks good in GTI spec.
The ultimate.
