It’s a bit like the change from Mk5 to Mk6. Somehow the 6 looked blander than the 5 and this is the same.

The styling crease on the side of the 7/7.5 has been softened which makes the 8 look more slab sided and taller. Not a great look.

Looks more like a facelift than a new car

Or botched plastic surgery.............

Wheels are awful, engine cover looks awful (noticed the whole VAG range is making them plain black without badges), fog lights are Renault.

Its not MK3 bad, but its not MK5/7 good either. More like a MK6.

I get people like the subtle thing, no doubt this is their type of car. But the wheel designs are a mess! Diamond cut is renowned for not having a lasting finish, this wheel in particular will look awful once it starts bubbling.

Maybe VW are only interested in the car looking good for the short term (lease periods), that doesn't fit in with the old image of golfs to me.

Nicer looking car and interior than the id3.

Gotta say big fan of the interior but that exterior is horrible, not one redeeming feature about it look at the placement of the GT(*) badge on the rear looks ste.

I bet they bring out an r line that looks sportier than that.

Also for those that are saying people don't want bling cars well don't buy a hot hatch then if I wanted a bog standard looking car I'd buy an entry level golf.

Also what is it with manufacturers and bringing back fog lights on ste patterns I thought vw had done away with them at the mk7 with led headlights why they taken a step back.

Gear shift selector looks similar to new the 911 version. Need to see one in the flesh to make my mind up..

Car looks a bit frowny - like it has been sent to bed without having any pudding.

I think it looks neat, perhaps too conservative but those wheels look dreadful in my opinion. I like the digital dash but I prefer buttons over touch screens which I find are literally hit and miss,... frustrating and distracting !

I have to say I think the grey one in particular looks very much a Golf,

Classless (that is not the same as lacking in class) understated, and a car for all occasions.

Bravo VW it appears to be a convincing evolution of the breed.

You really are a broken record where Golfs are concerned. You pop up, give the old “white goods” cliche, and claim you’re not interested (despite reading and commenting on the topic). You’re actually more boring than the car in question.

Re. the car. Not convinced, but I’ll reserve judgement until I see it in the flesh.

Dull apart from the GTi wheels, which look awful!

Not entirely to sure about the looks! Think i prefer the cooking R-Line if i’am honest. Still it’ll be a great car probably.

The engine cover? For goodness sake get a grip, it's not a Lamborghini, the only time you'll look at it is to top up the screen wash.

Bless, did your mummy help you with that comment?
Oooh, touchy! Did you draw it or sign it off?

The front end looks are a bit, well, challenging. The headlight/grille area appears to have been designed by a different person to the rear end - it also appears that those two people never met each other.

Excluding the wheels and the rear badge placement, I kind of like it. Interior looks a good step up (I had a MK7.5 R) although the steering wheel doesn’t look too great.

I like Golf’s for the exact reason they aren’t shouty. Comments saying why bother because it just looks like a standard Golf seem daft, are you buying a car like this for it’s look at me status or it’s added performance? If you want to show off, buy a full on sports car. Maybe it’s because I’m getting old, but when I see anyone over 25 in something like the recent Civic Type R’s they just look a little............silly.

Will definitely look at the R version when it arrives and make up my mind then. (And hope for better wheels!)

Can't help but think those wheels are holding back a decent looking car.

The interior looks better, just hope its a bit less plasticy.
