Hmmm, bit dull. They've also removed one of the best things about front wheel drive cars - a proper handbrake to pull cheeky corner skids around tight corners. Presumably chassis is well sorted. It does look rather bland compared to the subtly handsome Mk7.
No steering-bar? FFS. Glad I don't buy new cars.

I think you miss the point. Some like cars to not look bling but perform well. The opposite of all mouth no trousers if you will.

Plenty of shouty hot hatches available, good to have a capable and subtle option.
Agreed. The Honda for instance is a superb drive but it looks like something you'd need to complement with an always-up hoodie, an addiction to vaping and a couple of ear-plugs. Shudders

So, judging by this pic, the horizontal strip joining the headlights is an LED, it’s one of the DRLs, along with the sidelights and the RenaultSport rip-offs in the lower grille/gob?
What a remarkable achievement, a car that looks simultaneously bling and bleak.
Also, a GTI and a GTD sharing the same wheels is just plain wrong.

The option Santiago wheel on the MK7/7.5 was available for both GTI and GTD.

I actually think that red GTI looks pretty nice in that image. Wheels make a huge difference.

Trust me, all cars look half decent from that height and at that angle - it’s an old photographer’s trick.
Not sure about the wheels; they’re better, yes - but they also have a whiff of ‘bought from a bloke down the pub and don’t tell anyone, but last night they were on an Audi’.

So so boring. Come on VW change the mould a bit, liven things up, you never know you might even reinvent the hot hatch if you weren't soooo conservative.

I think the new Golf (and the new Polo especially) look like a Vauxhall Astra mark 3 from the early 90s. I've had three R cars, but this one doesn't do it for me. Sure there are some changes, but it feels like it might be a parts-bin special; perhaps VW is spending as little capex money as possible on their new 'dirty' cars. I read the new R has 328 bhp? Not a material leap forward - but gain, from the same engine etc etc

From that angle it doesn't really look like a Golf to my eyes. The wheels still look lousy too. It does look quite distinctive though at that angle.

Similarly, I didn't think the MK7 looks like a Golf when it came out. It was quite different to what had preceded it.

This looks so plain and bland it could pass for any other standard new car. The mk7 looks much more sportier inside and out.

328 isn't exactly low on power. And given their Dieselgate costs to date are circa $34B and rising, money must be saved somewhere. The engine isn't exactly the same. I understand it has more forged internals. I don't see much to complain about, save for the wheels

It's the S3 which might be a bit disappointing. The exact same engine and power as the previous model, due to Audi fleet emissions targets.

Seriously, the engine cover!!!??? Does anyone actually care what one looks like in this class of car? There really isn’t anything much to behold or stand back in wonder under the bonnet.

Actually doesn't look too bad there, though the wheels are horrible (but I've come to expect that from new OEM wheels)

I take it there isn't going to be a 3 door version any more?

If these were four-spoke, they'd make a solid reference to the roots of VW.

Dunno, bit far fetched perhaps?
